Verdict (2026)
nib suits people who want private hospital cover with limits printed on the page, a digital claims process, and the option to buy without an adviser. The Hospital plans carry clear per-person yearly caps, and the non-PHARMAC add-on closes one of the sharpest gaps in the public system. It suits you less if you have a health history: some pre-existing conditions are covered only after three years and others never. nib also publishes no overall claims acceptance rate on the pages we read, including its claims page, so it cannot be compared on that measure.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Published Hospital limits of $300,000 surgical and $200,000 non-surgical per person per year (compare plans) | Some pre-existing conditions are covered only after three years, and others never (compare plans) |
| non-PHARMAC Plus add-on in four cover levels, for Medsafe-approved medicines PHARMAC does not fund | It is an optional add-on, not standard cover, and needs a specialist recommendation |
| Digital claiming: a photo of a receipt through the app or my nib (claims) | No overall claims acceptance rate is published on the pages read |
| Three purchase routes: direct, adviser or employer scheme | Everyday plan sub-limits and the available excess levels are not published |
| A (Strong) from S&P on the RBNZ register | One notch below Southern Cross Medical Care Society on the same agency's scale |
| Also writes its own Life and Living range, so health and life can sit with one insurer | Life claims run through a separate channel from health claims |

Legal entity, ownership and brand history
The company that carries the risk is nib nz limited, a licensed insurer on the Reserve Bank's register with a licence effective date of 26 June 2013. Source: RBNZ register, read 18 August 2026. It is part of the Australian-based nib Group, which provides health insurance to more than 1.4 million Australian and New Zealand residents. Source: About nib, read 18 August 2026.
nib's own account of its New Zealand history runs in four dated steps, from the same page:
- 2012. nib Group entered New Zealand by acquiring Tower Medical Insurance Limited.
- 2015. nib acquired the OnePath medical business.
- 2018. nib launched a Māori population health initiative with Auckland iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
- 2022. nib acquired Kiwi Insurance Limited, which is how its members gained access to life and living covers.
A correction belongs here. An earlier version of this review said nib acquired Cigna's New Zealand life insurance business in 2023. That was wrong. Cigna's New Zealand business was acquired by Chubb and is now Chubb Life. nib's life and living covers came from the Kiwi Insurance purchase, as nib's own history states.
Today's Life and Living products are issued and underwritten by nib nz limited, which is solely responsible for claims under that cover. Source: nib Life and Living page, read 18 August 2026.
Claims record and claims process
nib does not publish an overall claims acceptance rate on the pages we read, unlike the major NZ life insurers. This review records that as a gap rather than quoting a number. What nib does publish in detail is how claiming works, and its process is one of the most digital in the market.
For everyday claims, you pay your healthcare provider on the day, then submit a photo or scan of the receipt through the my nib portal or the nib app. nib emails you once the claim has been assessed or if more information is needed. Source: nib claims page, read 18 August 2026.
For specialist consultations, diagnostics, surgery and cancer treatment, nib recommends requesting a pre-approval before treatment, so you know what is covered before costs are incurred. Some providers require a pre-approval letter before starting treatment. Pre-approvals run through my nib, and some providers in nib's First Choice network can handle the paperwork and claim on your behalf.
Life and Living claims run through a separate channel from health claims. Source: nib life and living claims contact, read 18 August 2026. For help with cover or claims, nib's phone line is 0800 123 642.
nib health insurance plans: the current structure
nib's current New Zealand cover is built from Hospital plans, an Everyday plan and optional add-ons, which can be combined. Source: nib compare plans page, read 18 August 2026. Earlier versions of this review described a three-tier "Hospital, Hospital and Specialist, Comprehensive" structure. That no longer matches nib's published line-up.
Hospital plans: Standard and Premium
Both Hospital plans are built for the big costs: surgery, cancer treatment, specialist consultations and diagnostic investigations such as MRI and CT scans. Both carry published overall limits of $300,000 per person per year for surgical benefits and $200,000 per person per year for non-surgical benefits. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
The difference sits in breadth. On Standard Hospital, specialist consultations and diagnostic investigations are covered up to six months before and after a related hospital admission. Premium Hospital covers them whether or not they relate to an admission. Cancer treatment cover includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and brachytherapy. Both plans cover extraction of impacted and unerupted teeth once the policy has been held at least 12 months.
On a Hospital plan you choose an excess, and a higher excess means a lower premium. Pre-existing conditions are restricted. nib's own footnote states that on Hospital plans some pre-existing conditions will only be covered after three years, and others will never be covered.
Everyday plan
The Everyday plan covers day-to-day health costs such as the GP, dentist and physio, by refunding a percentage of eligible costs. Claims run through the app or my nib, and the plan can be held alongside a Hospital plan. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
Hospital add-ons, including non-PHARMAC Plus
Options can be added to a Hospital plan. The most significant is non-PHARMAC Plus: cover for Medsafe-approved medicines that PHARMAC does not fund, used in a private hospital or at home, where a specialist recommends them and they relate to an approved Hospital plan claim. It comes in four cover levels and also covers medicine administration costs. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
Non-PHARMAC drug cover matters in New Zealand because the public system generally funds only PHARMAC-listed medicines. Our public versus private healthcare guide explains that gap in more detail.
Life and Living Insurance

Beyond health cover, nib sells a Life and Living range of life and living covers. It is issued and underwritten by nib nz limited, which is solely responsible for claims under it. Source: Life and Living Insurance page, read 18 August 2026. Full benefits, exclusions and terms are set out in the policy wording linked from that page.
Benefit sub-limits for individual Everyday plan categories, the available excess levels, and Life and Living feature detail are set by the policy documents. nib does not publish a consolidated table of them, so this review does not state them. nib does publish a 14-day free-look period when you join, with premiums refunded if you cancel within it having made no claims.
How you can buy nib
nib sells direct and through advisers. Its own health insurance page describes three routes: buying directly online, buying through a financial adviser, or getting cover through an employer scheme. Source: nib health insurance page, read 18 August 2026.
Online quoting runs through nib's join site. Premiums are calculated on factors including age, gender, smoking status, cover level and chosen excess, and nib publishes a 2% direct debit discount. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
The trade-off is the usual one. Buying direct is quick, but an adviser can put nib's plans beside Southern Cross, AIA and Partners Life for your situation. Plan structures, excess options and benefit limits differ enough between insurers that comparing providers makes a real difference.

How nib compares
Every rating below is the insurer's own published disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. Price is not compared here, because a health premium depends on your age, region, plan and excess.
| Licensed insurer | Financial strength | Rating as at | How you can buy | Health product shape |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nib nz limited | A (Strong) (S&P), disclosure | Date not published | Adviser or direct | Hospital plans, Everyday plan, add-ons |
| Southern Cross Medical Care Society | A+ (Strong) (S&P), disclosure | Date not published | Adviser or direct | Surgical and healthcare plans, day-to-day plans, shared cover plans |
| Partners Life Limited | A (Excellent) (A.M. Best), disclosure | 5 Feb 2026 | Through an adviser | Private Medical Cover alongside life products |
| AIA New Zealand Limited | AA (Fitch), disclosure | Date not published | Adviser or direct | Health cover alongside life products |
S&P, A.M. Best and Fitch use different scales, so the letters are not interchangeable between rows. Every grade above is also recorded against its licensed entity on the RBNZ register of licensed insurers, read 18 August 2026. Benefit-by-benefit comparison depends on plan generation, excess and sub-limits, and no insurer publishes a directly comparable schedule. That is what a side-by-side quote is for.
Exclusions and things to note
Every point below comes from a named nib page, with the date we read it. The policy documents govern any claim, not this page.
- Pre-existing conditions are restricted. On Hospital plans, nib states some will only be covered after three years, and others will never be covered. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- Standard Hospital limits specialist and diagnostic cover to a window. It covers them up to six months before and after a related admission. Premium Hospital covers them at any time. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- Dental extraction cover has a 12-month qualifying period. Extraction of impacted and unerupted teeth is covered once the policy has been held at least 12 months. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- non-PHARMAC Plus is an optional add-on, not standard cover. It applies to Medsafe-approved medicines PHARMAC does not fund, where a specialist recommends them and they relate to an approved Hospital plan claim. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- Hospital plans carry an excess you choose, and a higher excess lowers the premium. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- Pre-approval is expected for the big claims. For specialist care, diagnostics, surgery and cancer treatment, nib recommends pre-approval before treatment, and some providers require the letter first. Source: nib claims page, read 18 August 2026.
- There is a 14-day free-look period when you join, with premiums refunded if you cancel within it having made no claims. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
- Everyday plan sub-limits and Life and Living feature detail are not published on the pages read. They sit in the policy documents. Source: Life and Living Insurance page, read 18 August 2026.
Who nib may suit
People who want private hospital cover with published limits. The Hospital plans carry clear per-person, per-year limits, with cancer treatment including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and brachytherapy. Source: compare plans, read 18 August 2026.
People who want non-PHARMAC drug cover. The add-on has four selectable cover levels and addresses one of the sharpest gaps in the public system.
People who value a digital claims experience. Everyday claims are a photo of a receipt in the app, pre-approvals run through my nib, and First Choice providers can handle claim paperwork directly.
People who want the option of buying direct. nib sells online, through advisers and through employers, so you are not locked into one channel.
Where nib has gaps, and when to look elsewhere
Anyone with pre-existing conditions. On nib Hospital plans, some are covered only after three years and others never. Insurers differ meaningfully in how they underwrite health history. This is the strongest reason to compare with an adviser before applying, and to apply while healthy rather than after a diagnosis.
Anyone selecting on published claims data. nib publishes no overall acceptance rate. If that transparency drives your choice, the major life insurers such as Partners Life, AIA and Asteron Life publish annual figures, though health and life claims are not comparable.
Anyone whose priority is comprehensive life cover. nib's core strength is health. The specialist life insurers, Partners Life, Fidelity Life and Asteron Life, offer broader advised life, trauma and income product sets.
Anyone weighing nib against Southern Cross benefit for benefit. Neither insurer publishes a directly comparable schedule. Get both quoted side by side for your age, region and excess before deciding.
Where nib sits with QuoteHub
nib is one of the insurers on QuoteHub's advice panel. It appears in the list of providers on our disclosure page alongside AIA, Partners Life, Fidelity Life, Chubb Life, Asteron Life, Momentum Life and Southern Cross. Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name. Henry Smith is a Financial Adviser (FSP1010699). Details of how our advisers are paid are on the disclosure page.
That relationship means QuoteHub advisers can arrange nib cover. It does not change anything in this review, which is built from nib's own documents and the Reserve Bank's register.
Compare nib before you commit
Health cover is decided by your health history as much as by the plan table. Put nib beside the rest of the panel in our insurer comparison tool, and read how health insurance works in New Zealand before you apply. If you would rather have it done for you, start your free comparison.
Limitations of this review
This review is built only from public documents. It states no premium figures, because health pricing depends on your age, gender, smoking status, plan, excess and region. Three gaps are recorded rather than guessed: the effective date of nib's current rating, an overall claims acceptance rate, and Everyday plan sub-limits, excess levels and Life and Living feature detail. An earlier version of this review misattributed the Cigna NZ acquisition to nib, and the correction appears above. Details were current at the dates shown and change without notice. The policy documents, not this page, govern any claim. Ratings were last re-verified against the RBNZ register and nib's own disclosure, and QuoteHub re-verifies published ratings quarterly.

How nib compares on financial strength
Financial strength is the one comparable published fact about an insurer. Every grade below is the insurer's own disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. A rating belongs to that entity, not to a brand or a product name.

Questions about nib
Who is nib?
Sells health cover both direct and through advisers, with life cover alongside it. The New Zealand arm of the listed Australian insurer nib. The licensed entity behind the policies is nib nz limited.
Who owns nib?
nib holdings limited (ASX listed). Ownership matters because it decides who carries the risk behind a claim, not how a claim is assessed.
Is nib financially strong?
nib nz limited holds a A rating from Standard & Poor's, read from the insurer's own disclosure on 14 Aug 2026. A rating is an independent view of the ability to pay claims. It says nothing about what a policy covers or what it costs.
Can I buy nib cover without an adviser?
Both routes exist. You can go direct, or use a licensed adviser who can put nib next to the other insurers on the same set of details.
What does nib cover?
Private health cover, Everyday health cover, Business schemes. What each of those pays, and what it excludes, is set by the policy wording rather than by the marketing page, which is why the documents are listed on this page with the date we read them.
Where can I read nib's policy wording?
We link 2 of nib's own documents on this page, each with the date it was read. The wording is the contract; a brochure is not.
Is nib the cheapest?
No insurer is cheapest for everyone. Price depends on your age, your health and an underwriting decision that has not happened yet, so a comparison that leads with price compares the wrong thing. The published limits and definitions are what can be compared, and they are on this page.
How does nib compare with the other insurers?
The financial strength table on this page puts every insurer we compare side by side, with the agency, the grade and the date. The benefit limits sit on the comparison page, and a licensed adviser can run your own details across the panel.
Does QuoteHub work with nib?
Yes. nib is on the QuoteHub panel, so a licensed adviser can quote them, compare them against the rest of the panel and arrange the cover. The full panel is published on the disclosure page rather than implied.
What should I check before applying to nib?
The stand-down period, the exclusions that apply to your own history, whether the premium is stepped or level, and what happens at renewal. All four are in the wording and none of them is in a price.
Does nib cover pre-existing conditions?
Not automatically. An existing condition is either excluded, loaded or accepted on its own terms, and that decision is made at underwriting on your own history. What matters is what you disclose, because non-disclosure is the most common reason a claim is declined.
Are nib premiums stepped or level?
Both structures exist in the New Zealand market. Stepped rises with your age each year and costs less at the start; level holds a rate to a chosen age and costs more early and less later. Which is cheaper over the life of the policy depends on how long you keep it, not on the insurer.
Can I move to nib from another insurer?
Yes, but moving means new underwriting, so anything that has happened to your health since you took the old policy is assessed again. Never cancel the old cover until the new policy is issued and you have read what it excludes.
Does nib pay claims quickly?
Claims-paid percentages and payment times are published by some New Zealand insurers and not by others, on different bases, which is why we publish the figure only where the insurer publishes it with a period. Where we hold one it appears on the review page for that insurer.
Is nib regulated in New Zealand?
Yes. A licensed insurer is regulated by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and the advice about a policy is regulated separately by the Financial Markets Authority. Those are two different licences and both matter.
What happens to my nib policy if the company is sold?
A policy is a contract with the licensed entity, so it continues on its terms if ownership changes. New Zealand has seen several life books change hands, and the practical effect for existing policyholders is usually the servicing brand rather than the cover.
How much does nib cover cost?
We do not publish a price for an insurer on this page. A premium depends on age, health, smoking status, occupation, the cover amount and an underwriting decision, so a single figure would be wrong for almost everyone reading it.
Where can I get advice about nib?
A licensed financial adviser can compare it against the rest of the panel on your own details and tell you where it suits you and where it does not. QuoteHub is a trading name of a licensed Financial Advice Provider and the review is free.
How do I make a complaint about nib?
Raise it with the insurer first. If it is not resolved you can take it to the insurer's dispute resolution scheme at no cost. QuoteHub's own scheme is the Financial Dispute Resolution Service.
