NZ insurer financial strength explorer

Every licensed NZ life and health insurer that QuoteHub has verified is listed below with its current financial strength rating — the agency that issued it, the grade, the effective date where one is published, and a linked source for every rating. All grades were re-verified against the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s register of licensed insurers on 15 Aug 2026. Ratings from different agencies use different scales and are not comparable — the scale guide below explains each one.

Every verified licensed insurer’s rating

The table lists licensed life and health insurers alphabetically by legal entity name, because New Zealand insurance is sold under brand names while the licence — and the obligation to pay claims — sits with a legal entity on the RBNZ register. Where an insurer also underwrites direct brands, those brands are shown against it. There is no ranking here: an alphabetical list with per-agency scales is the only honest presentation.

Who actually underwrites the direct brands

AA Life, NZ Seniors, OneChoice and Southern Cross Life Insurance are marketing brands, not licensed insurers: each one’s policies are issued by a different company whose balance sheet pays the claims, and the RBNZ register lists legal entities only — trading names and brands are deliberately excluded (RBNZ register, retrieved 15 Aug 2026). The table below states each brand’s underwriter from the brand’s own legal disclosure, with the rating attributed to the underwriter — never to the brand.

Direct-to-consumer brands and the licensed insurer that issues their policies. A brand has no rating of its own — the rating that matters is its underwriter’s.

Three agencies, three different scales

The RBNZ recognises three rating agencies for New Zealand insurer financial strength disclosures — A.M. Best, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings — and its register records each insurer’s grade in a separate column per agency (RBNZ register, retrieved 15 Aug 2026). The letters look similar across agencies but sit at different positions on different scales, so a grade only means something next to its own agency’s definitions.

A.M. Best

A.M. Best’s Financial Strength Rating scale runs A++ and A+ (Superior), A and A- (Excellent), B++ and B+ (Good) — the grades A.M. Best classes as “secure” — then B and B- (Fair), C++ and C+ (Marginal), C and C- (Weak) and D (Poor), which it classes as “vulnerable”, with E, F and S denoting regulatory supervision, liquidation and a suspended rating. A.M. Best’s own scale page could not be verified without a login on 15 Aug 2026, so this summary is cited to the scale republished in Momentum Life’s statutory financial strength disclosure (retrieved 15 Aug 2026) and to the agency column of the RBNZ register. Note the trap: on this scale a B grade is in the “vulnerable” band, while a B from another agency sits somewhere else entirely.

Standard & Poor’s

S&P’s insurer financial strength scale runs AAA (extremely strong), AA (very strong), A (strong) and BBB (good), then BB (marginal), B (weak), CCC (very weak) and CC (extremely weak), with SD and D for insurers in default; grades from AA to CCC may carry a plus or minus to show relative standing within the category. Definitions per S&P Global Ratings Definitions (retrieved 15 Aug 2026).

Fitch Ratings

Fitch’s Insurer Financial Strength scale runs AAA (Exceptionally Strong), AA (Very Strong), A (Strong) and BBB (Good), then BB (Moderately Weak), B (Weak), CCC (Very Weak), CC (Extremely Weak) and C (Distressed), with plus or minus suffixes from AA down to CCC. Scale structure per Fitch’s published rating definitions and the IFS category definitions republished in Asteron Life’s statutory financial strength disclosure (both retrieved 15 Aug 2026).

Because the scales differ, grades must never be ranked across agencies: B++ (Good) on A.M. Best’s scale and BBB (Good) on Fitch’s are different positions on different ladders, assessed under different methodologies (RBNZ register agency columns). QuoteHub publishes no composite score and no cross-agency ranking — each grade is shown only against its own agency’s scale.

Methodology

Every rating on this page comes from QuoteHub’s evidence register, which records each grade with its agency, source URL, retrieval date and verification date, and is cross-checked against the RBNZ register of licensed insurers — the register that New Zealand law obliges insurers to keep current: under section 63 of the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act 2010, insurers must tell the Reserve Bank when their rating changes. The register lists legal company names only and records the current grade without effective dates, so effective dates on this page come from agency press releases or the insurer’s own statutory disclosure page, and where none is published the gap is stated rather than estimated.

Re-verification: ratings are a high-risk claim class, so this dataset is re-checked against the register on the day any update to this page is published — most recently 15 Aug 2026 — and sits on a 90-day review cycle, with the next scheduled review due by 13 November 2026. Agencies re-rate insurers between our reviews, so always confirm a current grade against the register or the insurer’s own disclosure page before relying on it.

Underwriter versus brand: a rating belongs to the licensed entity, never to a marketing brand. The clearest New Zealand example is Pinnacle Life Limited, which holds a single B+ rating from A.M. Best (Pinnacle Life financial strength disclosure, affirmed 15 Apr 2026; cross-checked against the RBNZ register) and issues the policies sold under three separate consumer brands: Pinnacle Life, NZ Seniors and OneChoice. Anyone weighing the financial strength behind an NZ Seniors or OneChoice policy is weighing Pinnacle Life’s rating, whatever name is on the advertising.

What this page deliberately leaves out: the register lists 79 licensed insurers, most of them general insurers outside QuoteHub’s life-and-health scope. Within scope, rows are excluded when their facts are not yet verified to publication standard — as of 15 Aug 2026 that includes UniMed (rating outlook and effective date awaiting confirmation), Booster Assurance and Tiaki Toa (business details unverified; no rating required per the register), and Hallmark Life and Beneficial Insurance (product status unverified). Each exclusion is a recorded gap in QuoteHub’s evidence register, not an editorial judgement about the insurer.

What a financial strength rating is — and is not

A financial strength rating is an agency’s forward-looking opinion of an insurer’s ability to meet its policy obligations — its capacity to pay claims over time. It is not a promise that any individual claim will be accepted: claim outcomes turn on the policy wording, disclosure at application time and the facts of the claim, none of which a rating measures. It is not a product-quality score, it says nothing about premiums or service, and it is not financial advice.

Which rating matters for you depends on what the cover is for: a term life policy you expect to hold for 30 years, an income protection claim that could pay for decades, and a one-year funeral policy lean on an insurer’s balance sheet in very different ways. If you want to talk that through, a licensed adviser can put the ratings on this page in the context of your own cover — book a free review or start with our insurer comparison.

Where QuoteHub stands

QuoteHub’s advice panel — the insurers our advisers can place cover with — is listed on our disclosure page: AIA, Partners Life, Fidelity Life, Chubb Life, nib, Asteron Life and Southern Cross. Every other insurer on this page, including Pinnacle Life, NZ Seniors, OneChoice, Momentum Life and the legacy-book insurers, is covered as market information only — we list them because the register does, not because we have any commercial relationship with them.
