Verdict (2026)

Asteron suits people who want adviser-built life, trauma or income cover from a long-established insurer with a strong published claims record. The A+ from Fitch is high and now sits on Rating Watch Positive, the 1878 heritage is real, and Nippon Life sits behind the group. It does not suit anyone who needs private medical cover, wants a wellness discount, or wants to buy the Asteron brand directly. Two dated changes matter before you commit: the ownership moved to Resolution Life in 2025, and the brand becomes Acenda Life from 2027.

The company that carries the risk is Asteron Life Limited, a licensed New Zealand insurer. Asteron traces its roots to 1878, including a long period trading as Royal and SunAlliance. Source: About Asteron Life, read 15 August 2026. For most of its modern history it sat inside Australia's Suncorp Group.

That era has ended. Resolution Life agreed to buy Asteron Life from Suncorp on 4 April 2024 and completed the purchase on 3 February 2025. Both Suncorp and Resolution Life confirm that date. Asteron now describes itself as part of the Acenda Group, the renamed Resolution Life Australasia, which is ultimately owned by Nippon Life Insurance Company of Japan.

From 2027, Asteron Life becomes Acenda Life

Asteron has announced that from 2027 it will come together with Resolution Life New Zealand under a single brand, Acenda Life. The change is described as carefully phased and subject to regulatory approval. Asteron states that policies, cover, benefits, premiums, claims rights and customer support all remain unchanged. Source: Asteron Life is becoming Acenda Life, read 15 August 2026.

If you hold or are comparing an Asteron policy, the name on the letterhead will change. The underwriting entity and your policy terms are stated not to.

Asteron Life also underwrites AA Life

Asteron's balance sheet stands behind more than its own brand. AA Life Insurance policies are distributed by the New Zealand Automobile Association and are provided and underwritten by Asteron Life Limited. AA Life's own disclosure quotes Asteron's A+ Fitch rating as the rating behind those policies. Source: aalife.co.nz, read 15 August 2026.

If you are weighing an AA Life policy, the insurer you are actually assessing is Asteron.

Claims record: the 97% figure, with its denominator

Asteron's most recent published claims figures come from its own media release of 11 December 2024. It paid out on 97% of the trauma, life and income protection claims received from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, with acceptance above 95% in each of those three categories. In total it paid $112 million in the year to June 2024: $53.5 million in life insurance, $34.1 million in trauma and $24.4 million in monthly income protection claims. Source: Asteron Life claims release, 11 December 2024.

Accident or injury was the leading cause of monthly income claims, at 53% of claims received. Asteron reported that mental health claims run longer than others, averaging 8 to 12 months against 6 to 8 months for other new claims.

Two caveats matter. The reporting period ends before the Resolution Life purchase completed, and no equivalent figures for a later period appear on the pages we read. Published claims percentages are also not comparable between insurers, because each picks its own denominator and period:

Asteron's figure is the highest of the four. It is also the narrowest, covering three product categories, and the oldest.

Making a claim with Asteron Life

Claims do not have to go through an adviser. Phone the claims team on 0800 737 101, weekdays 8:30am to 5pm. You can also complete the relevant form and return it to [email protected], or post it to Freepost Authority Number 795, Asteron Life Claims Department, PO Box 894, Wellington 6140. Source: Asteron Life claims page, read 15 August 2026.

Asteron says you will get an acknowledgement within one hour, a status update within 5 to 7 working days and a dedicated case manager. Once a claim is accepted, payment typically takes two days to process.

Asteron Life products: what the range covers

Asteron's current range covers personal and business risk, but not private medical or health insurance. Source: Asteron Life insurance range, read 15 August 2026.

Feature detail is set by the policy wordings, and Asteron does not publish a consolidated feature table publicly. Older reviews, including earlier versions of this page, repeated feature claims such as stepped-to-level conversion without re-underwriting, and the absence of policy fees. We could not re-verify either, so this review does not state them.

Asteron has been named Life Insurance Company of the Year at the New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Source: Asteron Life awards page, read 15 August 2026.

How you can buy Asteron Life

Asteron's own-brand products are sold through financial advisers rather than direct. Its site directs customers to advisers, and its general enquiries line is 0800 737 101. Source: About Asteron Life, read 15 August 2026. Its direct-to-consumer presence runs through the AA Life brand, which the Automobile Association distributes.

The practical consequence is straightforward. If you want an Asteron policy built for your situation, you will work with an adviser. If you buy AA Life directly, you are buying Asteron-underwritten cover without personalised advice.

How Asteron Life compares

Every rating below is the insurer's own published disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. Price is not compared here, because a premium only means something once your age, health and occupation are known.

Licensed insurer Financial strength Rating as at How you can buy Private medical cover
Asteron Life Limited A+ (Fitch), disclosure Date not published Through an adviser No
AIA New Zealand Limited AA (Fitch), disclosure Date not published Adviser or direct Yes
Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited A (Excellent) (A.M. Best), disclosure Date not published Adviser or direct No
Fidelity Life Assurance Company Limited A- (A.M. Best), disclosure 5 Mar 2026 affirmation Through an adviser No
Partners Life Limited A (Excellent) (A.M. Best), disclosure 5 Feb 2026 Through an adviser Yes
Momentum Life Limited B (Fair) (A.M. Best), disclosure 11 Feb 2026 Direct only No

Fitch and A.M. Best use different scales, so the letters are not interchangeable between rows. Every grade above is also recorded against its licensed entity on the RBNZ register of licensed insurers, read 18 August 2026. Ratings were read from each insurer's own disclosure on 14 August 2026 and can change. Check every licensed NZ life and health insurer in our financial strength explorer.

Exclusions and things to note

Every point below comes from a named Asteron page or document, with the date we read it. The policy wording governs any claim, not this page.

Who Asteron Life may suit

People who weight published claims performance heavily. The 97% payout figure is the strongest published number among the major NZ life insurers, with the denominator caveats above.

People who want adviser-built cover from a long-established insurer. A licensed history reaching back to 1878, a current A+ from Fitch, and the backing of one of the world's largest life groups is a stable base for a policy that may pay a claim decades from now.

Income protection buyers. Monthly income cover is a core Asteron line, with $24.4 million paid in the year to June 2024 and accident or injury the leading cause.

When you need closer advice, or a different insurer

Anyone who needs private medical insurance. Asteron does not write it. nib and Southern Cross are the health specialists, and Partners Life and AIA sell medical cover alongside life products.

Anyone who wants to buy direct. Asteron's own products are adviser-sold. The direct route into Asteron-underwritten cover runs through AA Life, without personalised advice.

Anyone choosing purely on financial strength. A+ is a high grade, and it is on Rating Watch Positive. AIA New Zealand still carries AA from Fitch on the same register, and Fidelity Life sits at A- from A.M. Best. Grades from different agencies are not interchangeable.

Anyone who wants a wellness or rewards programme. Asteron does not run one. AIA's Vitality is the only programme of its kind among the major NZ life insurers.

Anyone with a complex health history or hazardous occupation. How an insurer underwrites your profile matters more than any brand comparison, and that is a conversation for a licensed adviser.

Where Asteron Life sits with QuoteHub

Asteron Life is one of the insurers on QuoteHub's advice panel. It appears in the list of providers on our disclosure page alongside AIA, Partners Life, Fidelity Life, Chubb Life, Momentum Life, nib and Southern Cross. Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name. Henry Smith is a Financial Adviser (FSP1010699). Details of how our advisers are paid are on the disclosure page.

That relationship means QuoteHub advisers can arrange Asteron cover. It does not change anything in this review, which is built from Asteron's own documents and the Reserve Bank's register.

Compare Asteron before you commit

Asteron only makes sense next to the alternatives for your age, health and occupation. Put it side by side with the rest of the panel in our insurer comparison tool, and read how life insurance and income protection work here before you decide. Limitations of this review

This review is built only from public documents. It states no premium figures, because pricing depends on your age, health, occupation, smoking status and cover structure. Three gaps are recorded rather than guessed: the effective date of the A+ rating, any claims statistics covering a period after June 2024, and product feature detail such as waiting periods, entry ages and built-in benefits. The Fitch rating is on Rating Watch Positive, so it may move. Details were current at the dates shown and change without notice. The policy wording, not this page, governs any claim. Ratings were last re-verified against the RBNZ register and Asteron's own disclosure, and QuoteHub re-verifies published ratings quarterly.

How Asteron Life compares on financial strength

Financial strength is the one comparable published fact about an insurer. Every grade below is the insurer's own disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. A rating belongs to that entity, not to a brand or a product name.

Questions about Asteron Life

Who is Asteron Life?

Underwrites the AA Life brand as well as its own, and intends to become Acenda Life New Zealand in 2027. Adviser-distributed. The licensed entity behind the policies is Asteron Life Limited.

Who owns Asteron Life?

Resolution Life (acquisition from Suncorp completed 3 Feb 2025). Ownership matters because it decides who carries the risk behind a claim, not how a claim is assessed.

Is Asteron Life financially strong?

Asteron Life Limited holds a A+ rating from Fitch, read from the insurer's own disclosure on 14 Aug 2026. A rating is an independent view of the ability to pay claims. It says nothing about what a policy covers or what it costs.

Can I buy Asteron Life cover without an adviser?

Both routes exist. You can go direct, or use a licensed adviser who can put Asteron Life next to the other insurers on the same set of details.

What does Asteron Life cover?

Life cover, Trauma cover, Income protection, TPD. What each of those pays, and what it excludes, is set by the policy wording rather than by the marketing page, which is why the documents are listed on this page with the date we read them.

Where can I read Asteron Life's policy wording?

We link 4 of Asteron Life's own documents on this page, each with the date it was read. The wording is the contract; a brochure is not.

Is Asteron Life the cheapest?

No insurer is cheapest for everyone. Price depends on your age, your health and an underwriting decision that has not happened yet, so a comparison that leads with price compares the wrong thing. The published limits and definitions are what can be compared, and they are on this page.

How does Asteron Life compare with the other insurers?

The financial strength table on this page puts every insurer we compare side by side, with the agency, the grade and the date. The benefit limits sit on the comparison page, and a licensed adviser can run your own details across the panel.

Does QuoteHub work with Asteron Life?

Yes. Asteron Life is on the QuoteHub panel, so a licensed adviser can quote them, compare them against the rest of the panel and arrange the cover. The full panel is published on the disclosure page rather than implied.

What should I check before applying to Asteron Life?

The stand-down period, the exclusions that apply to your own history, whether the premium is stepped or level, and what happens at renewal. All four are in the wording and none of them is in a price.

Does Asteron Life cover pre-existing conditions?

Not automatically. An existing condition is either excluded, loaded or accepted on its own terms, and that decision is made at underwriting on your own history. What matters is what you disclose, because non-disclosure is the most common reason a claim is declined.

Are Asteron Life premiums stepped or level?

Both structures exist in the New Zealand market. Stepped rises with your age each year and costs less at the start; level holds a rate to a chosen age and costs more early and less later. Which is cheaper over the life of the policy depends on how long you keep it, not on the insurer.

Can I move to Asteron Life from another insurer?

Yes, but moving means new underwriting, so anything that has happened to your health since you took the old policy is assessed again. Never cancel the old cover until the new policy is issued and you have read what it excludes.

Does Asteron Life pay claims quickly?

Claims-paid percentages and payment times are published by some New Zealand insurers and not by others, on different bases, which is why we publish the figure only where the insurer publishes it with a period. Where we hold one it appears on the review page for that insurer.

Is Asteron Life regulated in New Zealand?

Yes. A licensed insurer is regulated by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and the advice about a policy is regulated separately by the Financial Markets Authority. Those are two different licences and both matter.

What happens to my Asteron Life policy if the company is sold?

A policy is a contract with the licensed entity, so it continues on its terms if ownership changes. New Zealand has seen several life books change hands, and the practical effect for existing policyholders is usually the servicing brand rather than the cover.

How much does Asteron Life cover cost?

We do not publish a price for an insurer on this page. A premium depends on age, health, smoking status, occupation, the cover amount and an underwriting decision, so a single figure would be wrong for almost everyone reading it.

Where can I get advice about Asteron Life?

A licensed financial adviser can compare it against the rest of the panel on your own details and tell you where it suits you and where it does not. QuoteHub is a trading name of a licensed Financial Advice Provider and the review is free.

How do I make a complaint about Asteron Life?

Raise it with the insurer first. If it is not resolved you can take it to the insurer's dispute resolution scheme at no cost. QuoteHub's own scheme is the Financial Dispute Resolution Service.
