The QuoteHub Premium Index: what life, trauma and TPD cover cost in New Zealand, September 2026
The QuoteHub Premium Index prices life, trauma and total and permanent disability (TPD) cover across six New Zealand insurers, as at 8 September 2026. For $500,000 of stepped, non-smoker life cover, the cheapest quote in the panel runs from $23.30 a month at age 30 to $630.52 a month at age 65 (see the methodology for how the panel is built). Income protection was withdrawn from the Index on 9 September 2026 after a pricing error and mortgage repayment cover is not yet priced this cycle; see How much does income protection cost in New Zealand? What… and the methodology's Corrections section for why.
This is not a quote engine. Nobody, including us, can quote your premium from a table: New Zealand life, trauma, TPD and income protection are individually underwritten, and your own price depends on your health, occupation, smoking status and the answers you give an insurer. What this page gives you instead is calibration, the same job Statistics NZ's Consumers Price Index does for the cost of milk: a real, dated, repeatable measurement of what six named insurers actually charge for the same profile, so you can tell whether a quote you have been given sits inside the market or well outside it. If you want the number that will actually apply to you, use our life insurance calculator to size the cover, then speak to a licensed adviser.
How the Index works
Every figure on this page and its child pages comes from one of two places: a premium table drawn from the Index itself, or a price with its own linked, dated citation to an insurer's published rate page. The Index itself is built from live rate cards run through Quotemonster (QPR), the industry-standard quoting engine advisers use, on the QuoteHub adviser account, and restated quarterly. It is not a live quoting tool on this page: the figures below are a snapshot, current at 8 September 2026, and every table carries that date.
Six insurers sit in the panel: AIA New Zealand, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, Momentum Life and Partners Life. Not every insurer prices every product or every cover amount, and a blank cell in any table means that insurer did not price that exact profile in this snapshot, not that cover is unavailable. Momentum Life is the one deliberate exception worth flagging up front: it is a guaranteed-acceptance product capped at $300,000 of life cover with a two-year pre-existing-condition stand-down, so it appears only in the $250,000 life tables. That is a feature of the product, not a gap in the data.

The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 shows the cheapest priced $500,000 life quote in the panel climbing from $34.51 a month at age 30 (male, non-smoker) to $630.52 a month at age 65, more than an eighteen-fold rise across the nine age bands the panel measures, and consistently cheaper for women at every one of the nine age bands the panel measures. Full age-by-age detail, plus the $250,000 and $1,000,000 tables, sit on our dedicated life insurance cost page.

The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 names Fidelity Life the cheapest priced insurer in 20 of the panel's 36 age, gender and smoking-status cells at $500,000 of cover, with AIA cheapest in the other 16. At $250,000, Fidelity Life is cheapest in 34 of 36 cells; at $1,000,000, AIA takes the lead with 20 of 36. No single insurer is cheapest at every cover amount, which is the practical argument for comparing rather than assuming.

Our men-versus-women page explains why New Zealand still prices life cover this way.
What trauma and TPD cost
Trauma and TPD are priced on a narrower panel than life cover in this snapshot, and the gaps in the tables below are honest gaps: several insurers did not return a quote for these products through the account this cycle, not a sign the product does not exist. Income protection is not in this section: it was withdrawn from the Index on 9 September 2026 after a pricing error (see the methodology's Corrections section), and QuoteHub does not currently publish an income protection premium anywhere on the site. How much does income protection cost in New Zealand? What… explains what drives the cost instead, with no premium figure, and our income protection calculator sizes the cover you need in the meantime.

For $250,000 of TPD cover, The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 shows AIA pricing the full panel this cycle, Chubb Life 26 of 32 cells and Fidelity Life 24, with Asteron Life partial at 18 and Partners Life and Momentum Life not returning quotes for this product this cycle. A 40-year-old non-smoking man's cheapest AIA quote sits at $21.17 a month. Our TPD cover page and TPD calculator explain what "total and permanent disablement" actually has to mean for a claim to pay.
Mortgage repayment cover: not yet priced
Mortgage repayment cover is not in this snapshot. The Quotemonster account used to build the Index hit its own cap of 999 quotes for the month on 8 September 2026, and there was not enough headroom left to run a fifth product before the cap reset. It will be added at the next quarterly restatement. Until then, use our mortgage protection calculator to work out how much cover a mortgage actually needs, and see our mortgage protection guide for how the product itself works.
Insurers in the panel
The six insurers priced in this Index are AIA New Zealand, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, Momentum Life and Partners Life, each linked above to its own entity page with financial strength, claims and policy detail. Our life insurance companies directory covers the wider New Zealand panel, including insurers not yet in this snapshot; our health insurance and income protection hubs cover the adjacent products this Index does not currently price at all. The four products, briefly
Life cover pays a lump sum to your estate or a nominated beneficiary if you die, or in most policies if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness. Trauma cover (sometimes called critical illness cover) pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed condition such as cancer, heart attack or stroke, whether or not you can still work. TPD cover pays a lump sum if you become totally and permanently disabled and unable to work, under a definition set out in the policy wording. Income protection replaces a portion of your income, usually up to 75 percent, if illness or injury stops you working, paid monthly for as long as the benefit period runs; it carries no priced figure in this Index while the 9 September 2026 withdrawal is in effect. Life, trauma and TPD each have their own H2 breakdown above; income protection's own dedicated page, How much does income protection cost in New Zealand? What…, explains what drives the cost instead.
Frequently asked questions about NZ insurance costs
How much does life insurance cost in NZ per month?
For $500,000 of stepped, non-smoker cover, the cheapest priced quote in The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 runs from $23.30 a month at age 30 to $630.52 at age 65. Our life insurance cost page breaks this down by $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 of cover, with a table for every age band.
How much does income protection cost in NZ per month?
QuoteHub does not currently publish an income protection premium: the figures previously shown here were withdrawn on 9 September 2026 after a pricing error, and the cost depends materially on your waiting period, benefit period and occupation class in any case. See what sets the price for the factors that drive it, sourced to each insurer's own wording, and when priced figures return.
How much does trauma cover cost in NZ per month?
For $100,000 of trauma cover, a 40-year-old non-smoking man's cheapest quote in The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 is $37.01 a month with Asteron Life. Five insurers price this product this cycle, with AIA and Partners Life covering every age band in the panel.
How much does TPD insurance cost in NZ per month?
For $250,000 of TPD cover, a 40-year-old non-smoking man's cheapest quote in The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 is $21.17 a month with AIA. Only AIA, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life and Asteron Life priced this product this cycle; Partners Life and Momentum Life did not return TPD quotes through the account.
What does TPD cover you for?
TPD (total and permanent disablement) cover pays a lump sum if illness or injury leaves you permanently unable to work, under a definition set out in the policy wording, typically either your own occupation or any occupation you are reasonably suited to by training and experience. It is distinct from income protection, which pays an ongoing monthly benefit rather than a lump sum, and from trauma cover, which pays on a listed diagnosis rather than an inability to work.
How do you qualify for TPD?
You qualify for a TPD payout by meeting the policy's own disability definition, usually assessed by a specialist and the insurer after a stated period unable to work, commonly six months. Each insurer's wording differs on whether the test is "unable to work in your own occupation" or the stricter "unable to work in any occupation," which is why the definition matters more than the price when you compare policies; see our TPD cover page for how each insurer defines it.
What is the best age to get life insurance?
There is no single best age published for New Zealand: the data in The QuoteHub Premium Index, September 2026 shows the cheapest priced quote roughly doubling every decade from your thirties, so the earlier you lock in a rate while healthy, the less you pay across the life of the policy. Our life insurance cost page answers this in full with the age curve.
Do I get my money back if I outlive my life insurance?
Not with term life cover, which is the product priced in this Index: if you outlive the policy or stop paying premiums, nothing is returned, because the premium paid for protection during the years you were covered, not an investment. A small number of older "whole of life" products build a surrender value, which our whole life insurance guide covers separately from the term cover priced here.
Which term insurance is best for smokers?
No single insurer is published as "best for smokers" across every age and cover amount in the panel: our smoker page shows the cheapest insurer for a smoker changing by age and cover, and the smoker-to-non-smoker multiple itself moving from roughly 1.5 times in your twenties to over 2 times through your fifties before narrowing again near 65.
Which is better, level or increasing (stepped) death benefit?
Neither is universally better: a stepped premium starts lower and rises each year as you age, while a level premium starts higher and stays flat, so the right structure depends on how long you plan to hold the cover and whether you would rather pay more now or more later. Our stepped versus level premiums guide works through the crossover point where stepped pricing overtakes level.
What are the different types of premium payment modes?
New Zealand life insurers generally offer monthly, fortnightly and annual payment modes, and Momentum Life's own Quick Life policy wording (November 2025, retrieved 8 September 2026) sets out fortnightly, monthly and annual options with payment by direct debit or credit card as one example. The figures throughout the Index are quoted as a monthly premium, the most commonly compared unit.
What will disqualify me from life insurance?
No single answer is published because every insurer underwrites individually, but the factors that most often lead to a decline or a loading are a serious current health condition, a hazardous occupation or pastime, extreme sports, and in Momentum Life's guaranteed-acceptance product, active terminal illness or hospice care at the time of application (Momentum Life Quick Life, retrieved 8 September 2026). A decline from one insurer does not mean a decline from all of them, which is why an adviser working across a panel matters.
What is insurance underwriting?
Underwriting is the process an insurer uses to assess your risk, based on your age, health, occupation, lifestyle, family history and smoking status, and to decide whether to offer cover, at what price, and with what exclusions or loadings. Guaranteed-acceptance products such as Momentum Life's Quick Life skip full underwriting in exchange for a lower cover cap and a stand-down period on pre-existing conditions (Momentum Life, retrieved 8 September 2026).
Do women pay less for life insurance in NZ?
Yes, on every age band this Index measures at $500,000 of non-smoker cover, though the gap is not constant: it runs from 65.3 percent more for a 25-year-old man down to 14.4 percent more at 40 before widening again to 55.1 percent by 65. Our men-versus-women page has the full age curve and the mortality-based reasoning insurers give for it.
What insurer was cheapest most often in the Index?
Fidelity Life was the cheapest priced insurer in 67 of the 108 life-cover cells the Index measures across $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 of cover, with AIA cheapest in 37, Asteron Life in 3 and Partners Life in 1. That is a count of this snapshot only, not a claim that Fidelity Life will be cheapest for your own application.
How wide is the gap between the cheapest and most expensive quote?
At $500,000 of non-smoker cover, the gap between the panel's cheapest and dearest quote for the same age and gender runs from roughly 8 percent to 17 percent across every age band this Index measures, fairly stable rather than widening with age. The widest single gap by dollar value in the QuoteHub Premium Index's whole life data set is at 65, male, smoker, $1,000,000 of cover, where the panel spans $2,043.51 to $2,554.14 a month, a difference of $510.63. Comparing more than one insurer, not just accepting the first quote, is where that gap gets closed.
Why does Momentum Life only appear at $250,000 of cover?
Momentum Life's Quick Life is a guaranteed-acceptance product capped at $300,000 of cover per life insured, with no medical underwriting and a two-year stand-down on pre-existing conditions and suicide (Momentum Life Quick Life, retrieved 8 September 2026), so it is not priced at $500,000 or $1,000,000 in this Index and the blanks in those tables are correct, not missing data.
What is occupation class 1?
Occupation class 1 is the lowest-risk underwriting tier insurers use for income protection and TPD pricing, typically covering professional and low-manual-risk desk-based occupations; a class-3 or higher-risk occupation generally pays more for the same benefit. Every figure in this Index is occupation class 1, standard rates, because that is the only class the panel priced this cycle.
How often is the QuoteHub Premium Index updated?
Quarterly. The account used to build it, run through Quotemonster (QPR), carries a monthly quote cap, and this snapshot is current at 8 September 2026; the next restatement is due before the end of the current quarter. See our methodology page for the full method and the cap.
Where does the QuoteHub Premium Index data come from?
Every figure is a live rate-card quote run through Quotemonster (QPR), the quoting platform advisers use, on the QuoteHub adviser account, for a standard, occupation class 1, stepped-premium profile with no loadings or exclusions applied. It is not a marketing estimate and not a live quote for you personally; see Quotemonster and our own methodology page for how the panel is built and restated.
Is life insurance worth it in NZ?
For most people with dependants, a mortgage or debt that would fall to someone else, the cost shown throughout this Index, often under $50 a month in your thirties for $500,000 of cover, is small against the payout it buys. Whether it is worth it for your situation depends on what you are protecting and who relies on your income; our how life insurance works guide and a conversation with a licensed adviser are the next steps.
About this data
Figures on this page are drawn from The QuoteHub Premium Index, a live rate-card study run through Quotemonster (QPR) on the QuoteHub adviser account, current at 8 September 2026 and restated quarterly. Premiums shown are monthly, stepped, occupation class 1, standard rates, with no loadings or exclusions applied. Your own premium will depend on underwriting. Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name. Adviser's view
QuoteHub's read is that showing three honestly priced products beats showing four when one of them is wrong, which is why income protection carries no figure on this page after its 9 September 2026 withdrawal. Life, trauma and TPD below were unaffected and are priced exactly as sourced from insurers' published rate cards.
