Funeral cost calculator for New Zealand
A full funeral for 50 guests averages $11,700 with a cremation and $14,300 with a burial in New Zealand, and an unattended cremation averages $4,700, according to the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand’s 2026 survey. This calculator builds an itemised estimate from FDANZ’s published ranges, so you can see where the money goes and what is left to find.
What a funeral costs in New Zealand
A funeral bill is several separate charges from different parties: the funeral director, the casket, the crematorium or cemetery run by the council, and the service itself. FDANZ asked its member funeral homes for typical prices against defined scenarios in 2025 and reported the averages in its 2026 report (FDANZ, 2026 New Zealand Funeral Industry Trends Report). Its item ranges come from a second page, indicative as at July 2025 (FDANZ: Funeral costs and financial support). The table below sets the three scenarios side by side.
| Scenario | National average | Range across New Zealand |
|---|---|---|
| Unattended cremation (no service) Unattended cremation with no service. FDANZ does not publish a range. | $4,700 | Not published as a range |
| Cremation with a service Full funeral, cremation, 50 attendees, catering, celebrant, slideshow and a mid-price casket. | $11,700 | $10,000 to $13,900 |
| Burial with a service Full funeral, burial, 50 attendees, catering, celebrant, slideshow and a mid-price casket. | $14,300 | $12,800 to $17,000 |
FDANZ says the long-quoted $10,000 figure is now below the average for a modest attended funeral. Our funeral cost guide walks through the report line by line.
Build your estimate
Choose the kind of funeral. The items that normally go with it are ticked for you, with FDANZ’s range for each. Untick what you will not need, and type a price in for any item you have a quote for; a quote replaces FDANZ’s range for that item. Nothing is estimated until you choose a funeral.
Step 1, the kind of funeral
The middle figure is the halfway point of each range. That is QuoteHub arithmetic, not an FDANZ average.
Choose a funeral type above to see an estimate. Until then nothing is calculated, because this tool never produces a figure from a choice you have not made.
The item ranges the calculator uses
Every figure is FDANZ’s published range, GST included, indicative as at July 2025. The professional services fee is usually the largest single item, ahead of the casket and the council fee. A cremation and a burial each have their own council line, and the calculator never counts both.
| Item | FDANZ range | Middle | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional services fee The funeral director’s time, transfers, arranging the funeral and registering the death. Usually the largest single item. | $3,000 to $6,500 | $4,750 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Preparation (for example embalming) FDANZ says this is often included in the professional services fee, so it starts unticked to avoid counting it twice. | $700 to $1,050 | $875 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Casket Lower-price cremation caskets sit at the bottom of the range. | $1,200 to $5,000 | $3,100 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Council cremation fee Charged by the crematorium. FDANZ’s 2025 national average is $920. | $600 to $1,100 | $850 | Cremation with a service |
| Council burial (plot plus interment) Charged by the cemetery. FDANZ’s 2025 national average across a 15-council sample is $4,865. This is not a cremation fee. | $1,000 to $8,000 | $4,500 | Burial with a service |
| Chapel hire Leave unticked if the service is held at home, a marae or another free venue. | $200 to $500 | $350 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Hearse hire | $200 to $450 | $325 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Celebrant or clergy FDANZ reports 76% of 2025 funerals used a celebrant or clergy member. | $300 to $900 | $600 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Flowers | $200 to $500 | $350 | Cremation or burial with a service |
| Death certificate A fixed fee. | $40 | $40 | Cremation or burial with a service |

Reading the result
The estimate is a sum of ranges, so the gap between the low and high totals is the honest message: most of the spread comes from the funeral director’s fee, the casket and, for a burial, the cemetery. A direct, unattended cremation sits at the bottom because there is no service, no hire and no catering; FDANZ reports 17% of 2025 funerals were of that kind. Cremation has become the more common choice nationally, but burial remains the norm for many Māori, Pacific and Asian families, and our guides on cremation costs and tangihanga costs cover those in more detail.
FDANZ says funeral homes will discuss budget restrictions and cheaper alternatives, such as a no-service cremation, if asked, and that lower-price cremation caskets are available at the bottom of the casket range. Asking for a written, itemised quote from more than one funeral home is the single most useful step, and the quote you get can be typed into the calculator item by item.
How families fund the amount
A funeral is normally paid from the estate first, but money can be held up until probate finishes. Other routes are savings, a prepaid funeral plan, life insurance that releases a funeral advance, the Work and Income Funeral Grant (up to $2,697.43, means-tested; see Work and Income: Funeral Grant) and, for accident-related deaths, ACC. The funeral grant guide and paying for a funeral set them out in order.
Funeral insurance is one more option for someone who wants to arrange the money in advance. Momentum Life’s Funeral Insurance pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 toward costs and accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 without health questions. In the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death, and total premiums can end up larger than the benefit. See the funeral insurance guide and the funeral costs hub.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a funeral cost in NZ?
FDANZ’s 2026 report gives $4,700 for an unattended cremation, $11,700 for a full funeral with a cremation and $14,300 with a burial, the last two for 50 guests. The ranges are $10,000 to $13,900 and $12,800 to $17,000.
What is the biggest cost in a funeral?
Usually the funeral director’s professional services fee, which FDANZ gives as $3,000 to $6,500, ahead of a casket at $1,200 to $5,000.
Why are cremation and burial fees kept apart?
They are charged by the council for different things. FDANZ gives a council cremation fee of $600 to $1,100 and a council burial (plot plus interment) of $1,000 to $8,000. Adding both would double count, and mistaking a bare cremation fee for a burial total would understate the bill.
What is not in the estimate?
Catering, a venue, a death notice, a headstone, travel and repatriation. FDANZ does not give item ranges for them, so you add them yourself in the other costs box.
Does the Work and Income grant cover a funeral?
Not on its own. The most it can pay is $2,697.43, subject to income and asset tests, and it may not be payable where other help, such as prepaid funeral cover, is available.
