Chubb Life NZ
Writes the adviser suite Assurance Extra, and underwrites the Life & Living policies Southern Cross sells under its own name. One insurer, two front doors.

Verdict (2026)
Chubb Life is the rare New Zealand life insurer you can buy either way. The online Life and Living range handles simple cover without an appointment, and the adviser-built Assurance Extra range assembles nine covers under one master policy. It also owns the strongest guaranteed-acceptance funeral offer for people aged 50 to 80. It does not sell private medical cover, its published claims percentages come without denominators, and its A rating is not the highest on the register. Check which Chubb entity any rating belongs to before you rely on it.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sells both online and through advisers, unlike most NZ life insurers | The two ranges are structured differently, so "compare Chubb" means little without naming the range |
| Assurance Extra assembles nine covers under one master policy | Entry and expiry ages for both ranges are not published publicly |
| Income Cover runs to 75% of income, capped at $30,000 a month, with terms to age 70 | The to-age-70 term is limited to occupation classes 1 and 2 |
| Guaranteed-acceptance Funeral Cover for ages 50 to 80, with no medical questions | Funeral Cover pays for non-accidental death only after 24 months |
| Reported paying 96% of claims in 2024 and 95% in 2025 | Neither percentage is published with a claim-count denominator |
| A (Excellent) from A.M. Best on the RBNZ register | No private medical insurance anywhere in the NZ range |

The two-Chubb trap: check which company you are reading about
Two separate licensed insurers trade in New Zealand under the Chubb name. They carry different ratings from different agencies. Confusing them is the single most common error in Chubb write-ups, including some on comparison sites. Before you rely on any "Chubb rating", check which entity it belongs to.

The AA- you may see quoted for "Chubb" in New Zealand belongs to the general insurer, Chubb Insurance New Zealand Limited, read 14 August 2026. It does not apply to any life, trauma, income protection or funeral policy. The rating that governs those policies is Chubb Life's own A (Excellent) from A.M. Best, on Chubb Life's disclosure.
Legal entity, ownership and brand history
The company that carries the risk is Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited, which the company calls "Chubb Life". It is a New Zealand incorporated insurer licensed by the Reserve Bank under the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act 2010, with a licence effective date of 12 August 2013. Source: RBNZ register, read 15 August 2026. It is not a branch of an overseas insurer, and it maintains its own New Zealand statutory fund as that Act requires.
Its ultimate parent is Chubb Limited, the NYSE-listed global insurance group. Chubb Life says it has been paying claims in New Zealand for more than a century, and that it looks after more than 250,000 New Zealanders with a team of more than 400 people. Sources: Chubb in New Zealand and Chubb Life NZ, both read 14 August 2026.
The Cigna history, not ACE
Chubb Life New Zealand did not come from ACE Life. It came from Cigna.
On 1 July 2022, Chubb Limited completed its acquisition of the companies housing Cigna's personal accident, supplemental health and life insurance business across six Asia-Pacific markets, including New Zealand. It paid US$5.36 billion for the group of operations. Source: Chubb's completion announcement, 1 July 2022.
Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited then changed its name to Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited. Chubb wrote to customers in March 2023 confirming the change, and the letter is explicit that it did not affect the terms, coverage or premiums of existing policies. Source: Chubb's customer letter.
An older policy schedule may still carry the Cigna name, or an earlier name again. Cigna itself had acquired the OnePath Life New Zealand business that the Assurance Extra suite came from. The underwriter today is Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited.
Chubb Life also underwrites Southern Cross life insurance
Chubb Life's balance sheet stands behind more than its own brand. The cover sold as Southern Cross Life Insurance and Southern Cross Life and Living Insurance is promoted by Southern Cross Insurance Services Limited. It is underwritten and administered by Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited, which is responsible for all claims. Source: Southern Cross Life legal disclosure, read 15 August 2026.
If you hold or are considering that product, the financial strength and claims decisions behind it are Chubb Life's. Our Southern Cross Life Insurance review covers what that means in practice.
Product range
Chubb Life runs two personal ranges plus a standalone funeral product. It does not offer private medical or health insurance in New Zealand.
Life and Living Insurance, the online range
Life and Living is the range you can quote and apply for yourself online. Source: Life and Living product page, read 14 August 2026. You mix and match three covers.
Life Cover pays a lump sum of up to $1.5 million if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness. Critical Illness Cover pays a lump sum on first diagnosis of a defined illness such as cancer, a heart attack or a stroke. Expenses Cover, which Chubb also describes as income protection, pays a monthly amount if illness or injury disables you.
A multi-benefit discount applies to this range: 10% off premiums for Life plus one other cover, and 12.5% for Life plus two, subject to minimum sums insured. Chubb is also offering a 15% Lifetime Reward until 28 February 2027 to applicants who are non-smokers with a BMI between 18.5 and 26.99 when cover starts.
Assurance Extra, the advised range
Assurance Extra is Chubb Life's master policy, built with an adviser from nine cover options. Source: Assurance Extra product page, read 14 August 2026.
- Life Cover and Life Income Cover, paying a lump sum, a monthly sum, or a mix, on death or terminal illness
- Income Cover, a monthly benefit if illness or injury disables you
- Trauma Cover, a lump sum on first diagnosis of a covered condition
- Mortgage Repayment Cover, a monthly benefit towards mortgage or rent payments on disablement
- Complete Disablement Cover, a lump sum if you become completely disabled
- Redundancy Cover, a monthly benefit for up to six months on involuntary redundancy
- Specific Injury Cover, a lump sum for covered accidental injuries
- Premium Cover, which pays your premiums if you are disabled, made redundant or declared bankrupt
There is a Business Assurance Extra equivalent, including business life, trauma, start-up monthly disability and specific injury cover.
Funeral Cover
Chubb Life sells a standalone Funeral Cover policy with guaranteed acceptance for New Zealand residents aged 50 to 80, with no medical questions. Cover is available up to $30,000. Source: Funeral Cover product page, read 14 August 2026.
Accidental death is covered immediately. Cover for all causes applies after 24 months. If the life assured dies from a non-accidental cause inside that first 24 months, Chubb refunds 100% of premiums paid. A 20% discount applies for a joint application with a partner or family member, there is a 30-day full-refund cooling-off period, and Chubb says it usually pays funeral claims within 48 hours of approval.
Waiting periods, benefit limits and ages

The figures in this section are the ones Chubb publishes in its own product documents. They are the ones worth checking against any other insurer you compare.
Income Cover, Assurance Extra
Cover runs to 75% of income, capped at $30,000 a month. Cover above that cap is considered case by case and is limited to a two-year payment term. Source: Assurance Extra Income Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
Waiting periods are 4, 8, 13, 26, 52 or 104 weeks. Payment terms are 2 years, 5 years, to age 65, or to age 70. The to-age-70 term is available only for occupation classes 1 and 2. Cover runs to age 65 for the shorter terms and to age 70 for the to-age-70 term.
Chubb offers agreed value and indemnity style options, along with loss of earnings variants. Agreed value fixes the monthly sum insured at the start, so you do not have to evidence income at claim time. Indemnity bases the claim on the lesser of the sum insured or 75% of pre-disability income. For self-employed people whose income moves around, that distinction matters a great deal.
Built-in Income Cover benefits include a partial disability benefit and a recurrent disability benefit, which waives the waiting period if the same disability returns within 12 months. A bed confinement benefit pays one thirtieth of the monthly sum insured per night after three consecutive nights. Vocational retraining and rehabilitation is capped at the lesser of the actual cost or 24 times the monthly sum insured.
Life Cover, Assurance Extra
The Terminal Illness Benefit pays the Life Cover sum insured early where the life assured is diagnosed with a terminal illness likely to cause death within 12 months. Source: Life Cover product page, read 14 August 2026.
Other built-in benefits include a Bereavement Support Benefit of up to $25,000 paid early towards funeral expenses, and a Funeral Transfer Benefit reimbursing up to $20,000 to return remains to New Zealand or a home country. A Life Events Benefit allows an increase in the sum insured of up to $250,000 on a qualifying life event without further health assessment. A Financial and Legal Advice Benefit reimburses up to $2,500 of professional advice costs. Cover can be written on a stepped or level premium basis.
Trauma Cover, Assurance Extra
Chubb offers Trauma Cover and a lower-cost Moderate Trauma Cover. Moderate Trauma covers the same full-benefit conditions but requires a higher severity threshold on 11 of the more common ones. Continuous Trauma is available as an option on both. Source: Assurance Extra Trauma Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
The Full Trauma Benefit pays the full sum insured. A Partial Benefit and a Diagnosis Benefit each pay 25% of the trauma sum insured, capped at $75,000, and the amount paid is deducted from the remaining sum insured. A complimentary children's benefit covers dependent children aged 3 months to 23 years for up to $50,000 at no extra cost, with an optional benefit adding up to $200,000 more. A repatriation benefit pays up to $10,000 to bring you home if you meet a full trauma condition while living overseas.
A 90-day stand-down applies to several conditions, including cancer, heart attack and stroke. Buy-back options let you reinstate reduced Life Cover, or reinstate Trauma Cover, after a full trauma claim without further health assessment, subject to the stated waiting times.
Entry and expiry ages: what is publicly verifiable

Chubb publishes some, but not all, of its age limits. The verifiable ones appear above: Funeral Cover's guaranteed-acceptance window of ages 50 to 80, Income Cover terms running to age 65 or 70 depending on the payment term and occupation class, and the children's trauma benefit covering ages 3 months to 23 years.
The entry-age ranges for taking out Life and Living covers, and the Assurance Extra life and trauma covers, are not published on the public product pages we read. So this review does not state them. An adviser can confirm the current limits for your age directly with Chubb Life, and the policy wording governs.
How you can buy Chubb Life
Chubb Life is not an adviser-only insurer, and that is one of the most frequently repeated errors about it.
Chubb Life distributes through four channels: independent financial advisers, its own employed Insurance Advisers, online direct, and a network of business partners. Source: About Chubb Life, read 14 August 2026. Chubb Life holds a full Financial Advice Provider licence from the Financial Markets Authority, and its own Insurance Advisers act as nominated representatives under it. Source: Chubb Life adviser disclosure statement, read 14 August 2026.
The split runs along product lines. Life and Living and Funeral Cover can be quoted and bought online. Assurance Extra is the advised product, because it is a mix-and-match master policy with nine covers, occupation classes and multiple income cover variants.
The honest framing is this. You can buy Chubb Life yourself if you want the simpler online range, and you will go through an adviser for the fuller Assurance Extra range. Because the two ranges are built differently, comparing "Chubb" against another insurer without naming the range produces a misleading answer.
Claims record and claims process
Chubb Life publishes headline claims data. It reported paying 96% of claims in 2024, and states on its life insurance page that it paid 95% of claims in 2025. Sources: Chubb Life 2024 claims statistics and the Chubb Life NZ page, both read 14 August 2026.
Its adviser-facing statistics break claims down by cover type, condition, age and gender. For 2024 it reported that under Life Cover the leading causes were cancer at 46%, heart conditions at 13% and other organs at 12%. The public pages we read do not state the claim-count denominators, so those percentages cannot be compared precisely against another insurer's.
Claims do not have to go through an adviser. You can phone the claims team on 0508 464 999, start online, email the claims team, or go through your adviser. Chubb says it aims to begin assessing a claim within five working days. A separate line, 0800 224 623, handles LifeOne, Funeral, Bill and Income Cover claims. Source: Chubb Life claims page, read 14 August 2026.
General insurance claims go to Chubb's general insurance team, not to Chubb Life. Claims under Southern Cross-branded life policies are decided by Chubb Life.

How Chubb Life compares
Every rating below is the insurer's own published disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. Price is not compared here, because a premium only means something once your age, health and occupation are known.
| Licensed insurer | Financial strength | Rating as at | How you can buy | Private medical cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited | A (Excellent) (A.M. Best), disclosure | Date not published | Adviser or direct | No |
| AIA New Zealand Limited | AA (Fitch), disclosure | Date not published | Adviser or direct | Yes |
| Asteron Life Limited | A+ (Fitch), disclosure | Date not published | Through an adviser | No |
| Fidelity Life Assurance Company Limited | A- (A.M. Best), disclosure | 5 Mar 2026 affirmation | Through an adviser | No |
| Partners Life Limited | A (Excellent) (A.M. Best), disclosure | 5 Feb 2026 | Through an adviser | Yes |
| Momentum Life Limited | B (Fair) (A.M. Best), disclosure | 11 Feb 2026 | Direct only | No |
Fitch and A.M. Best use different scales, so the letters are not interchangeable between rows. Every grade above is also recorded against its licensed entity on the RBNZ register of licensed insurers, read 15 August 2026, and the A.M. Best scale is published here. The Reserve Bank relies on insurers notifying it of rating changes, so always check the insurer's own disclosure for the current position. You can check every licensed NZ life and health insurer in our financial strength explorer.
Exclusions and things to note
Every point below comes from a named Chubb Life page or brochure, with the date we read it. The policy wording governs any claim, not this page.
- Funeral Cover pays for non-accidental death only after 24 months. Accidental death is covered immediately. Die of a non-accidental cause inside the first 24 months and Chubb refunds 100% of premiums paid rather than the sum insured. Source: Funeral Cover page, read 14 August 2026.
- Trauma Cover carries a 90-day stand-down on several conditions, including cancer, heart attack and stroke. Source: Assurance Extra Trauma Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
- Partial and Diagnosis trauma benefits reduce your remaining cover. Each pays 25% of the trauma sum insured, capped at $75,000, and the amount paid comes off the balance. Source: Trauma Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
- Moderate Trauma applies a higher severity threshold on 11 common conditions. It is cheaper for that reason. Source: Trauma Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
- Income Cover above $30,000 a month is case by case and limited to a two-year payment term. The to-age-70 payment term is open only to occupation classes 1 and 2. Source: Income Cover brochure, read 14 August 2026.
- Redundancy Cover cannot be bought on its own. It is available only alongside Income Cover or Mortgage Repayment Cover, and pays for up to six months. Source: Assurance Extra page, read 14 August 2026.
- The 15% Lifetime Reward is conditional and time-limited. It runs until 28 February 2027 and requires a non-smoker with a BMI between 18.5 and 26.99 at the time cover starts. Source: Life and Living page, read 14 August 2026.
- There is no private medical insurance in the New Zealand range, and entry-age ranges for the Life and Living and Assurance Extra covers are not published on the public pages we read. Source: Chubb Life NZ, read 14 August 2026.
Who Chubb Life may suit
People who want to sort simple cover online. The Life and Living range is built for self-service, with Life Cover up to $1.5 million available without an appointment.
People who want a broad advised policy in one contract. Assurance Extra's nine covers, including redundancy cover and premium cover, let an adviser assemble a wide package under one master policy.
Older applicants who want funeral cover without underwriting. Guaranteed acceptance from age 50 to 80 with no medical questions, up to $30,000, is genuinely differentiated. The trade-off is the 24-month stand-down.
People who want higher income protection limits. Cover to 75% of income up to $30,000 a month, with terms to age 70 for occupation classes 1 and 2, is at the upper end of what New Zealand offers.
When you need closer advice, or a different insurer
Anyone who needs private medical insurance. Chubb Life's range does not include it, so health cover needs a separate insurer such as nib or Southern Cross.
Anyone selecting on financial strength. A (Excellent) is strong but not the highest on the register. AIA New Zealand carries AA from Fitch there. Do not compare a New Zealand entity rating against a global parent rating, and remember the agencies' scales differ.
Anyone who wants a wellness or rewards programme. Chubb Life's discounts are structural, not behavioural: the multi-benefit discount and the Lifetime Reward for qualifying non-smokers.
Anyone with a complex health history, hazardous occupation or prior claims. How an insurer underwrites your profile matters more than any brand comparison, and that is a conversation for a licensed adviser.
Where Chubb Life sits with QuoteHub
Chubb Life is one of the insurers on QuoteHub's advice panel. It appears in the list of providers on our disclosure page alongside AIA, Partners Life, Fidelity Life, Asteron Life, Momentum Life, nib and Southern Cross. Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name. Henry Smith is a Financial Adviser (FSP1010699). Details of how our advisers are paid are on the disclosure page.
That relationship means QuoteHub advisers can arrange Chubb Life cover. It does not change anything in this review, which is built from Chubb Life's own documents, the Reserve Bank's register and A.M. Best's published rating action.

Compare Chubb Life before you commit
Which Chubb range you are quoted changes the answer, and so does every other insurer's underwriting of your health history. Put Chubb Life beside the rest of the panel in our insurer comparison tool, then read how life insurance and trauma insurance work here before deciding. If you would rather have it done for you, start your free comparison.
Limitations of this review
This review is built only from public documents. It states no premium figures, because pricing depends on your age, health, occupation, smoking status and cover structure. Two gaps are recorded rather than guessed: the effective date of A.M. Best's most recent affirmation, which is not publicly verifiable without an agency login, and the entry-age ranges for the Life and Living and Assurance Extra covers. Features, limits and offers were current at the dates shown and change without notice. The policy wording, not this page, governs any claim. Ratings were last re-verified against the RBNZ register and Chubb Life's own disclosure, and QuoteHub re-verifies published ratings quarterly.

How Chubb Life compares on financial strength
Financial strength is the one comparable published fact about an insurer. Every grade below is the insurer's own disclosure for the named licensed entity, linked and dated. A rating belongs to that entity, not to a brand or a product name.

Questions about Chubb Life
Who is Chubb Life?
Writes the adviser suite Assurance Extra, and underwrites the Life & Living policies Southern Cross sells under its own name. One insurer, two front doors. The licensed entity behind the policies is Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited.
Who owns Chubb Life?
Chubb Group. Ownership matters because it decides who carries the risk behind a claim, not how a claim is assessed.
Is Chubb Life financially strong?
Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited holds a A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best, read from the insurer's own disclosure on 14 Aug 2026. A rating is an independent view of the ability to pay claims. It says nothing about what a policy covers or what it costs.
Can I buy Chubb Life cover without an adviser?
Both routes exist. You can go direct, or use a licensed adviser who can put Chubb Life next to the other insurers on the same set of details.
What does Chubb Life cover?
Life cover, Trauma cover, Income cover, TPD, Funeral cover. What each of those pays, and what it excludes, is set by the policy wording rather than by the marketing page, which is why the documents are listed on this page with the date we read them.
Where can I read Chubb Life's policy wording?
We link 5 of Chubb Life's own documents on this page, each with the date it was read. The wording is the contract; a brochure is not.
Is Chubb Life the cheapest?
No insurer is cheapest for everyone. Price depends on your age, your health and an underwriting decision that has not happened yet, so a comparison that leads with price compares the wrong thing. The published limits and definitions are what can be compared, and they are on this page.
How does Chubb Life compare with the other insurers?
The financial strength table on this page puts every insurer we compare side by side, with the agency, the grade and the date. The benefit limits sit on the comparison page, and a licensed adviser can run your own details across the panel.
Does QuoteHub work with Chubb Life?
Yes. Chubb Life is on the QuoteHub panel, so a licensed adviser can quote them, compare them against the rest of the panel and arrange the cover. The full panel is published on the disclosure page rather than implied.
What should I check before applying to Chubb Life?
The stand-down period, the exclusions that apply to your own history, whether the premium is stepped or level, and what happens at renewal. All four are in the wording and none of them is in a price.
What plans does Chubb Life offer?
Assurance Extra, Life & Living. Each has its own page here setting out what it pays and what it does not.
Does Chubb Life cover pre-existing conditions?
Not automatically. An existing condition is either excluded, loaded or accepted on its own terms, and that decision is made at underwriting on your own history. What matters is what you disclose, because non-disclosure is the most common reason a claim is declined.
Are Chubb Life premiums stepped or level?
Both structures exist in the New Zealand market. Stepped rises with your age each year and costs less at the start; level holds a rate to a chosen age and costs more early and less later. Which is cheaper over the life of the policy depends on how long you keep it, not on the insurer.
Can I move to Chubb Life from another insurer?
Yes, but moving means new underwriting, so anything that has happened to your health since you took the old policy is assessed again. Never cancel the old cover until the new policy is issued and you have read what it excludes.
Does Chubb Life pay claims quickly?
Claims-paid percentages and payment times are published by some New Zealand insurers and not by others, on different bases, which is why we publish the figure only where the insurer publishes it with a period. Where we hold one it appears on the review page for that insurer.
Is Chubb Life regulated in New Zealand?
Yes. A licensed insurer is regulated by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and the advice about a policy is regulated separately by the Financial Markets Authority. Those are two different licences and both matter.
What happens to my Chubb Life policy if the company is sold?
A policy is a contract with the licensed entity, so it continues on its terms if ownership changes. New Zealand has seen several life books change hands, and the practical effect for existing policyholders is usually the servicing brand rather than the cover.
How much does Chubb Life cover cost?
We do not publish a price for an insurer on this page. A premium depends on age, health, smoking status, occupation, the cover amount and an underwriting decision, so a single figure would be wrong for almost everyone reading it.
Where can I get advice about Chubb Life?
A licensed financial adviser can compare it against the rest of the panel on your own details and tell you where it suits you and where it does not. QuoteHub is a trading name of a licensed Financial Advice Provider and the review is free.
How do I make a complaint about Chubb Life?
Raise it with the insurer first. If it is not resolved you can take it to the insurer's dispute resolution scheme at no cost. QuoteHub's own scheme is the Financial Dispute Resolution Service.
