What is a free insurance review?

A free insurance review is a structured conversation with a licensed New Zealand financial adviser about the cover you have and the cover your household would actually need. The adviser works through your income, dependants, mortgage and other debts, and any existing policies, then compares options across the insurers on the QuoteHub panel and explains what they would recommend and why.

It covers the six types of cover QuoteHub advises on: life insurance, income protection, trauma and critical illness, health insurance, mortgage protection and business protection. You can ask for all of them or just the one that is bothering you.

Who should book one?

Book a review if someone in New Zealand depends on your income, if you have a mortgage, or if you hold insurance you have never had read back to you. Policies bought years ago were priced and structured for the life you had then; a pay rise, a new child, a refinance or a change of job all move the number, and nothing in a policy updates itself.

If you have no dependants, no debt and savings deep enough to absorb a long spell without income, an adviser will usually say so. That is a legitimate outcome of a review, not a failed one.

How long does it take?

The request form takes about two minutes, and the first conversation with an adviser usually runs 10 to 30 minutes by phone or video call. If you decide to apply for cover, the full journey from application to being on risk typically takes about two to six weeks in New Zealand, depending on the insurer's underwriting and whether medical information is requested.

Nothing is submitted to an insurer without your agreement, and you can stop at any point. How it works sets out each stage in detail.

What does it cost?

The review is free and there is no fee at any stage. Insurance advisers in New Zealand are paid by the insurer through commission when a policy is placed, made up of an upfront payment and a smaller trail commission for as long as the policy stays in force. That cost is built into the insurer's standard premium, so using an adviser does not raise the price you pay.

Being paid that way is a conflict of interest and we disclose it rather than bury it. Read how we're paid and our disclosure statement for the full picture, including the insurers on the panel.

The limits of a review

QuoteHub is not an insurer and does not set premiums, underwrite applications or decide claims. Advice is given across the insurer panel named on our disclosure page, which is not every insurer selling cover in New Zealand, and an insurer outside that panel is not assessed. No figure shown anywhere on this site is a quote; the price you are offered is set by the insurer after underwriting.

QuoteHub operates under Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver (FSP 712931), a Class 2 Financial Advice Provider based in Sydenham, Christchurch. Personalised financial advice begins once an adviser has completed a needs analysis with you; the pages on this site are general information.
