A moving house checklist for New Zealand: every step, in order

Moving house in New Zealand means separately updating your address with at least six organisations, since none of them share your details automatically: Inland Revenue, NZTA, the Electoral Commission, your bank, your insurer, and NZ Post if you want a mail redirection, which starts from $25 for up to 2 months when booked online at least 4 working days ahead (NZ Post, Redirect my mail, retrieved 9 September 2026). This checklist covers what to do, and in roughly what order.

The checklist, in order

Each step below links to the organisation's own update page where one exists, and to the relevant QuoteHub guide where the topic has more depth.

  1. Book your mail redirection, ideally at least 4 working days before your move if applying online, or 6 if applying in an NZ Post store. See the redirection fees table below.
  2. Update your address with Inland Revenue through myIR, so tax correspondence and Working for Families payments keep reaching you.
  3. Update your driver licence and vehicle address with NZTA, so licence renewal reminders and any registered vehicle correspondence reach the right place.
  4. Update your enrolment with the Electoral Commission, since your enrolled address determines which electorate and local council ward you vote in.
  5. Tell your bank and any other financial institutions, so statements and important notices are not delayed or misdirected.
  6. Arrange or transfer your house and contents insurance, since your existing policy may not automatically cover the new address; see our insurance on settlement day guide if you are also buying, and our buying a house in NZ hub for the wider settlement checklist.
  7. Set up utilities at the new address and disconnect the old ones: power, gas, broadband and water where it's separately billed.
  8. Tell Work and Income, StudyLink or IRD Child Support if you receive any of those payments, since your address affects entitlements such as the Accommodation Supplement.
  9. Update your address with your employer, GP, dentist and any other regular providers, so payroll, appointment reminders and referrals reach you.
  10. Redirect or update subscriptions, memberships and online accounts with your new address, from streaming services to loyalty programmes.

Where to update your address, organisation by organisation

Each organisation on this checklist has its own separate update process; there is no single government form that updates them all at once.

Organisation How to update Source
Inland Revenue myIR, self-service phone line, or form IR238 by post Inland Revenue
NZTA (driver licence and vehicle) Online, with your NZ driver licence Govt.nz / NZTA
Electoral Commission Online with a driver licence, passport or RealMe login Vote NZ
NZ Post Online redirection service, or in an NZ Post store NZ Post

What it costs to redirect your mail

NZ Post's redirection service is the one step on this checklist with a published, tiered cost, which depends on how long you need it for.

Duration Apply online (household) Apply in an NZ Post store (household)
Up to 2 months $25.00 $37.00
2 to 4 months $35.00 $51.00
4 to 6 months $51.00 $74.00
6 to 12 months $94.00 $135.00

(NZ Post, Redirect my mail, retrieved 9 September 2026. Fees include GST and the 30% online discount; a senior rate is lower again. Redirection covers NZ Post mail only, not courier parcels or other providers such as DX Mail.)

What do I need to do before moving house in NZ?

Before moving day, the priority tasks are booking your mail redirection at least 4 working days ahead if applying online, confirming your new insurance cover starts on the right date, and arranging utility connections at the new address so you are not without power or broadband on arrival (NZ Post, Redirect my mail, retrieved 9 September 2026). If you are buying rather than renting, our buying a house in NZ hub covers the wider settlement-day checklist alongside this one.

How far in advance should I book a moving company or mail redirection?

For NZ Post's mail redirection, book at least 4 working days ahead if applying online, or 6 working days ahead if applying in store, since it takes that long to process (NZ Post, Redirect my mail, retrieved 9 September 2026). There is no published New Zealand-wide standard for how far ahead to book a removal company; industry practice is generally several weeks for a busy period such as the end of a school term, but this is not a figure any government source publishes.

Do I need to update my address with IRD when I move?

Yes. You can update your main address, or a different address for each tax account type, by logging in to myIR and selecting "Manage names and addresses," or by calling IRD's self-service line, or by posting a Change of details form (IR238) (Inland Revenue, Update my main address, retrieved 9 September 2026). This matters particularly if you receive Working for Families or child support payments, since IRD also needs to know about any change in your family situation or income at the same time.

What utilities do I need to set up when moving house?

The utilities most people need to arrange are power, gas (if connected), broadband or landline, and water where it is separately metered and billed by the local council rather than included in rates. There is no single government registry for this; each provider needs to be contacted individually to start a new connection at the new address and end the old one on the right date.

When should I switch my house insurance to my new address?

If you are moving into a property you already own, contact your insurer before moving day to confirm your policy covers the new address from the date you move in, since a standard house or contents policy is address-specific and does not automatically follow you. If you are simultaneously settling on a house purchase, our insurance on settlement day guide covers the separate timing rule that applies there, since cover generally cannot start before settlement.

Do I need to update my enrolment with the Electoral Commission?

Yes, and it is not automatic. Vote NZ (retrieved 9 September 2026) confirms your enrolled address determines which parliamentary electorate and local council ward you vote in, and if you move without updating it, you may eventually be moved to the dormant roll and stop receiving voting information. You can update it online with a New Zealand driver licence, passport or RealMe login.

Do I need to update my driver licence address when I move?

Yes. NZTA asks you to keep your address current so you receive notices such as licence renewal reminders, updated online through NZTA's Change of Address service using your New Zealand driver licence (govt.nz, Update your name, address or other details on your driver's licence, retrieved 9 September 2026). If you are updating a registered vehicle's address and don't hold an NZ licence, a separate online form applies.

What happens if I don't tell anyone I've moved?

Consequences vary by organisation rather than being set out in one place. IRD correspondence, including tax assessments and Working for Families payments, may be delayed or sent to the wrong address; NZTA licence renewal reminders may not reach you, though this does not excuse a licence from expiring; and the Electoral Commission may eventually place you on the dormant roll, removing your ability to vote until you update your details. Mail without a redirection in place is simply returned to sender or left with the new occupant.

Who else should I tell about my new address?

Beyond the six core organisations on this checklist, common ones people forget include their life or health insurer, their GP and dentist (so referral letters and reminders arrive correctly), their employer for payroll and any workplace insurance, and any hire purchase or finance company for a car or appliance loan. If Work and Income, StudyLink or another agency pays you an income-tested benefit, updating your address with them matters too, since accommodation-related payments can change with a move.

Can I redirect my mail to an overseas address?

Yes. NZ Post's redirection service covers both domestic and overseas addresses, with overseas redirection starting from $85 for up to 2 months when booked online, compared with $25 for a domestic redirection over the same period (NZ Post, Redirect my mail, retrieved 9 September 2026). The service still covers NZ Post mail only, not courier parcels.

Yes, if you receive any payment from either agency. Work and Income needs your current address to correctly pay income-tested supplements such as the Accommodation Supplement, and StudyLink similarly needs updated details for a student allowance or loan. Our Work and Income benefits hub covers how a change of address or costs can affect a benefit payment, and Temporary Additional Support is worth checking if the move itself has created a temporary cost squeeze.

What should I do about my will or power of attorney when I move?

There is no legal requirement to update a will or an enduring power of attorney simply because you have moved house, since neither document typically depends on your address to remain valid. It is still a sensible prompt to check both are current; our power of attorney in NZ guide covers what the document actually does and when it takes effect.

What moving house doesn't automatically change

A change of address does not automatically transfer cover, update every account, or carry across entitlements. The table below is a quick reference for what still needs a separate step.

What people assume happens automatically What actually happens
House and contents insurance moves with you You must contact your insurer directly; cover is address-specific
IRD and Work and Income share your new address Each agency needs telling separately
Your electoral enrolment updates itself You must update it yourself with Vote NZ
Mail simply follows you Only if you have paid for and booked an NZ Post redirection

(NZ Post; Inland Revenue; Vote NZ; retrieved 9 September 2026, see References below.)

If you are moving because you have just bought a house, our buying a house in NZ hub covers the earlier steps: mortgage pre-approval, a builders report, conveyancing costs and insurance on settlement day. If moving coincides with taking leave from work to manage the move, our annual leave entitlement guide and how annual leave pay is calculated cover how much notice your employer can require and what you're paid for the time off. If you are updating legal documents such as a will or an enduring power of attorney to reflect a new address, our power of attorney in NZ guide is the relevant next read.

Moving is also a sensible moment to review whether your existing life, health or income cover still fits your situation, particularly if the move comes with a new mortgage. Insurance for first-home buyers, comparing life insurance and income protection cover, and checking the QuoteHub quotes hub for current rates are all worth doing alongside the address updates on this checklist. Adviser's view

QuoteHub's read is that the single most common mistake is treating 'change of address' as one task instead of six separate ones: IRD, NZTA, the electoral roll, your bank, your insurer and NZ Post all need telling individually, and none of them talk to each other automatically.
