Financial support for cancer patients in New Zealand: grants, benefits, ACC and insurance
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
There is no single New Zealand payment for a cancer diagnosis: support is spread across at least six systems, from a $372.55-a-week Jobseeker Support benefit to National Travel Assistance and charity grants (Work and Income, retrieved 9 September 2026; Cancer Society NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). This guide lists every route with its actual figure, and is honest about the ones with no published amount.

Income support while you cannot work
Does Work and Income help cancer patients?
Yes. If cancer or its treatment affects your ability to work, Jobseeker Support pays $372.55 a week net for a single applicant aged 25 or over, with a Work Capacity Medical Certificate confirming your condition (Work and Income, retrieved 9 September 2026). If it severely limits your ability to work, Supported Living Payment pays more, $424.60 a week net for a single applicant aged 18 or over (Work and Income, retrieved 9 September 2026). Full comparison of both benefits, and how they relate to ACC, is on ACC vs sickness benefit NZ.
Can I get Working for Families if my income drops during treatment?
Potentially, yes. Cancer Society NZ points patients toward Working for Families Tax Credits if reduced working hours lower household income, administered through Inland Revenue (Cancer Society NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026).
Is there help with urgent or unexpected costs during treatment?
Cancer Society NZ directs patients to Work and Income's Special Needs Grant or Advance Payment of Benefit, which can help with costs such as home repairs, car repairs or other urgent needs, though some of these amounts may need to be repaid and are assessed case by case (Cancer Society NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026).
Can I get more help with childcare if I am unwell?
Yes. If you or a family member are seriously ill, Cancer Society NZ notes you may be able to access more hours of childcare assistance even if you or your partner are not working, on top of the standard Childcare Subsidy and OSCAR Subsidy rules (Cancer Society NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026).
Travel to treatment
Does National Travel Assistance cover cancer treatment?
Yes, if you are referred by one specialist to another within a government-funded service and meet the distance or frequency thresholds; it pays $0.44 a kilometre from 2 April 2026 (a temporary increase) and up to $140 a night for accommodation with an invoice (Health New Zealand, retrieved 9 September 2026). Health New Zealand publishes a high-frequency threshold of at least 22 specialist visits in 2 months and a repeated-travel threshold of at least 6 visits in 6 months with distance rules attached, both of which commonly apply to chemotherapy or radiotherapy courses (Health New Zealand, retrieved 9 September 2026). Full eligibility and claim steps are on National Travel Assistance NZ.
Comparing the two Work and Income benefits
The headline gap between the two main benefits is $52.05 a week, and which one applies depends on how severely treatment limits your ability to work, not on your diagnosis itself.
| Benefit | Weekly rate (single, no children) | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Jobseeker Support | $372.55 (25+) | A health condition, injury or disability that affects work capacity |
| Supported Living Payment | $424.60 (18+) | A health condition, injury or disability that severely limits work capacity |
(Work and Income, retrieved 9 September 2026.)
Support from cancer charities
What does the Cancer Society actually help with?
Cancer Society NZ's role is largely navigational and informational: it runs a Cancer Information Helpline on 0800 226 237, staffed by information nurses on weekdays from 8:30am to 5pm, and it points patients toward the government supports above rather than paying cash itself (Cancer Society NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). Cancer Society of New Zealand is a registered charity, CC30617 (Charities Services register, retrieved 9 September 2026).
Does Blood Cancer NZ give cash grants?
Not a fixed cash grant: Blood Cancer NZ (formerly Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ) says its financial assistance can include support such as food and petrol vouchers, assessed on an individual basis, and its services are funded by donations rather than government (Blood Cancer NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). No fixed dollar figure is published; contact Blood Cancer NZ directly to discuss your situation. Around 8 New Zealanders are diagnosed with a blood cancer every day (Blood Cancer NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026).
Is there a crowdfunding option if other support is not enough?
Some families use platforms such as Givealittle to raise money directly from their community; this is not an official government or charity scheme, and how much it raises depends entirely on the campaign, not on a published rate.
Paying for treatment and medicines
What if the medicine I need is not funded by Pharmac?
Pharmac's Exceptional Circumstances Framework, including the Named Patient Pharmaceutical Assessment (NPPA) policy, can fund a specific patient's access to a medicine outside the standard Pharmaceutical Schedule, assessed against published criteria with your specialist's support (Pharmac, retrieved 9 September 2026). For particularly urgent cases, a hospital can use the NPPA Rapid Hospital Assessment route to decide directly. Every funding route, including insurer cover and clinical trials, is set out on paying for non-Pharmac drugs NZ.
Does health insurance help with cancer treatment costs?
If you already hold a comprehensive health insurance policy taken out before your diagnosis, it can cover private surgical and specialist treatment under its usual terms; a cancer diagnosis found after taking out a policy is not automatically a pre-existing condition exclusion the way a diagnosis made beforehand would be. See health insurance non-Pharmac drugs NZ for how insurer cover works specifically for medicines outside the Pharmac schedule.
Insurance that pays a lump sum on diagnosis
Does trauma insurance pay out for cancer?
Yes, if you hold a trauma (critical illness) policy taken out before diagnosis and cancer is a covered condition under that policy's definitions, it pays a lump sum on diagnosis, separate from any income replacement or medical cover. Exact definitions and payout amounts vary by insurer and policy, so check your own policy wording, or use the trauma calculator and read trauma insurance definitions NZ and trauma insurance cost NZ to understand what a policy typically covers.
Can I still get trauma cover after a cancer diagnosis?
Realistically, no, not for the cancer you already have: insurers exclude pre-existing conditions, so cover arranged after a diagnosis will not pay out for that diagnosis. The value of trauma cover is in arranging it while healthy, for the next serious diagnosis your family may face. See the trauma cover guide, best trauma insurance NZ, the difference between life and trauma insurance, and compare with income protection vs trauma insurance. If income loss is the bigger concern day to day, the income protection guide and income protection calculator cover that side, and QuoteHub's health insurance guide covers cover for private treatment itself.
Where to go for each part of the picture
This guide covers financial support, not medical treatment decisions or ACC sensitive-claims matters, which sit outside QuoteHub's scope. The table below points to the rest of the off-work-sick cluster for the situations that usually run alongside a cancer diagnosis.
| If you need | Go to |
|---|---|
| Your employment and leave entitlement | Sick leave entitlement NZ |
| A certificate for your employer or Work and Income | Medical certificate NZ |
| Your full return-to-work rights | Returning to work after illness NZ |
| Every income source laid out in order | Financial help when sick NZ |

The bottom line
A cancer diagnosis in New Zealand touches at least six separate funding systems, and most families need two or three of them at once: a Work and Income benefit for lost income, National Travel Assistance for specialist trips, and either trauma insurance or a charity grant for the costs neither of those covers. Adviser's view
The question QuoteHub puts to clients is not which cancer payment to apply for, because no single one exists. The common mistake is searching for one benefit under a cancer label, when support actually sits across separate systems for income, travel, medicine and lump sums, each with its own criteria, so missing even one route usually means missing money that was genuinely available.
