How to claim on UniMed health insurance

The first question in a UniMed claim is not what you are claiming for, it is which portal is yours. UniMed runs two, and the one you use is decided by whether your policy number starts with a number or with the letters PL. Get that wrong and nothing else works.

Claiming with UniMed, step by step

  1. Look at the first character of your policy number. A policy number starting with a number means the UniMed Member Portal: Health Positive, Hospital Select Plus Modules, UniCare Advantage, or another plan originally issued by UniMed. A policy number starting with PL means the Accuro Member Portal: SmartCare, SmartCare+, SmartStay, KidSmart, Day to Day, StaffCare, StaffCare+, or another plan originally issued under the Accuro brand.
  2. Decide whether it is a claim or a prior approval. A claim is for treatment that has already taken place, submitted for reimbursement. If the treatment has not happened yet and is likely to cost $1,000 or more, or likely to need hospitalisation, UniMed requires prior approval first.
  3. Photograph the invoice, not the EFTPOS slip. UniMed will not accept EFTPOS receipts. It needs a PDF or a photo of the invoice or receipt from the provider or facility, one per image, showing the provider name, the date, the cost, the treatment and the name of the member being claimed for.
  4. Check the plan version that applies to you. UniMed states the plan document that applies depends on your cover start or renewal date, and that group policies through an employer can vary through Special Joining Concessions. The version that applies to you is in your Member Portal, not necessarily the one published on the website.

Questions about UniMed claims

Where is the UniMed claim form?

UniMed does not run the process on a downloadable form any more; claims and prior approval requests both go through a Member Portal. Which portal depends on your policy number: one starting with a number is the UniMed portal, one starting with PL is the Accuro portal. Third-party sites still hosting old UniMed claim form PDFs are not UniMed and the form may not be current.

Why are there two UniMed portals?

UniMed and Accuro came together, and the plans issued under each brand still sit behind their own portal. Your policy number carries the answer: a leading PL means Accuro, a leading digit means UniMed.

Why was my UniMed claim sent back?

The most common published reason is the document itself. UniMed will not process an EFTPOS receipt, needs one invoice per uploaded image, and needs the image to legibly show the provider, the date, the cost, the treatment and the member. An unreadable photo is the same as no invoice.

Can QuoteHub help with a UniMed claim?

No. UniMed is not on the QuoteHub panel, so we do not place or service their cover and have no standing on your policy. This page exists because the process is worth understanding if you hold one, not because we sell it. For a claim, deal with UniMed directly through your portal.
