UniMed prior approval: thresholds, documents and timeframe

UniMed publishes something Southern Cross and nib do not: how long prior approval takes. Three working days from receiving everything it needs, and up to five. That single published number is the most useful fact on this page, because it turns an open-ended wait into something you can plan a surgery date around.

Getting prior approval from UniMed

  1. Check the two thresholds. UniMed requires prior approval if the procedure or treatment is likely to cost $1,000 or more, or is likely to require hospitalisation. You may also submit a request under $1,000 simply to check you are covered.
  2. Send the estimate and the referral. UniMed asks for an estimate of costs covering all parts of the procedure, and a copy of the doctor’s referral or specialist letter confirming what the treatment is and why it is necessary.
  3. Expect a medical report request if you are newer or have exclusions. UniMed states a medical report from your GP or provider may be required if you have personal exclusions on your Membership Certificate, or if you have held the policy for less than five years. Being asked is routine, not a sign the claim is in trouble.
  4. Allow three to five working days. UniMed aims to process prior approval requests within three working days of receiving all your information, but says it may take up to five. Urgent requests go through direct contact instead.
  5. Approval usually means UniMed pays the provider. UniMed says that in most cases approval lets it pay your healthcare provider directly, so you are not paying up front and claiming reimbursement afterwards.

Questions about UniMed prior approval

How long does UniMed prior approval take?

UniMed aims for three working days from the point it has all your information, and says it may take up to five. The clock starts when the file is complete, which is why sending the cost estimate and the referral together matters more than sending something quickly.

Why would UniMed ask for a medical report?

UniMed names two triggers: personal exclusions listed on your Membership Certificate, or having held the policy for less than five years. Both are about whether the condition predates the cover. It is a routine check on a newer policy, not an accusation.

Does prior approval mean I do not pay anything?

It means UniMed can usually pay the provider directly rather than reimbursing you, and it confirms any conditions such as an excess. An excess is still yours, and anything the approval does not cover is still yours.

Is UniMed on the QuoteHub panel?

No, we do not place cover with them. That is worth stating on the page with the highest demand in this set: UniMed claim and claim form searches outnumber Southern Cross and nib. We can explain the published process, and we cannot act on your policy.
