Does a life insurance payout affect your WINZ benefit?

A life insurance payout does not count as income for Work and Income, and most main benefits have no asset test, so a payout does not usually reduce them directly. But once the money is in your bank account it is a cash asset, and payments that do have asset limits, such as the Accommodation Supplement, can stop while you are over them.

Work and Income's published policy manual, the Map, lists "any lump sum payments from life insurance or super schemes" among the payments that must be excluded when it assesses income (Work and Income Map: Income that must be excluded). Its general rule for capital payments is that a one-off lump sum is not income, but interest earned on a payment you invest is (Work and Income Map: Capital payments). The Map also says main benefits do not generally have an asset test, though the income an asset produces can still affect your rate (Work and Income Map: Income from assets). The catch is the payments that are asset tested. This page is general information, not advice about your file.

Income and assets are tested differently

Work and Income asks two separate questions about money.

So the same $20,000 can be ignored as income and still count as a cash asset the day it lands. For the Funeral Grant, the Map's definition of cash assets names "proceeds from life insurance policies or retirement funds" (Work and Income Map: Definition of assets). The pages we read for other payments do not spell out life insurance, so ask Work and Income rather than assume it is treated differently.

Which payments have a cash asset limit

The Map lists the payments that have their own asset test, including the Accommodation Supplement, Advance Payment of Benefit, Emergency Benefit, Funeral Grants, Residential Care Subsidy, Special Benefit, Special Needs Grant, Temporary Additional Support and a Jobseeker Support rule that sits under its residence criteria. We found published dollar limits for these:

Payment Single Couple (with or without children) or sole parent
Accommodation Supplement $8,100 $16,200
Special Needs Grant (hardship grant) $1,411.22 $2,351.46
Temporary Additional Support $1,411.22 $2,351.46

Sources: Work and Income: Accommodation Supplement, Work and Income: Special Needs Grant and Work and Income Map: Temporary Additional Support asset limits, as at 20 October 2026.

Two things the table corrects. The limit depends on whether you are single, in a couple or a sole parent, not on which area you live in. And for the Accommodation Supplement it is a cut-off, not a sliding scale: cash assets must be no more than the figure. Work and Income's Special Needs Grant page also leaves out the assets you need for daily living, such as your home and car. The Funeral Grant has its own test, covered below.

A worked example

This is an illustration with round numbers, not a prediction. A single person gets Jobseeker Support and the Accommodation Supplement. They are named as beneficiary on a parent's policy and receive $20,000.

  1. The $20,000 is not assessed as income, and the Map says main benefits do not generally have an asset test, so the main benefit is not cut for that reason. The Map does list one Jobseeker Support cash asset rule, so ask Work and Income whether it applies to you.
  2. The $20,000 is a cash asset. The Accommodation Supplement limit for a single person is $8,100, so on the page's wording they are over the limit and the supplement is not payable while that remains true.
  3. Any interest the money earns in a savings account is income and is assessed as income.
  4. Once the cash assets are back under $8,100, Work and Income reassesses. How quickly it restarts is not on the pages we read, so ask.

A couple in the same position has $16,200 before the supplement is affected, and the assets of both partners are added together.

What to watch for

Telling Work and Income

Work and Income expects to be told when your circumstances change. Tell it before the payout is made if you know it is coming, and keep the insurer's letter. Ask how each of your payments, not just the main benefit, will treat the money, and ask for the answer in writing. Work and Income is on 0800 559 009. Life cover and benefit-tested households

The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online quote. A payout from Momentum Life would be assessed like any other life insurance lump sum. Momentum Life's Quick Life takes New Zealanders aged 18 to 65 with no health questions, offers cover from $50,000 up to a $300,000 starting maximum, and excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years. Its Funeral Insurance takes ages 40 to 75, pays $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs, and in the first 24 months pays only for accidental death. Neither accepts new applicants over 75. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral, which matters on a tight household budget. Momentum Life Limited's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), in the "Vulnerable" range; see its financial strength page.

Adviser's view

A payout rarely cuts a main benefit directly. The risk is the extra help sitting beside it, such as the Accommodation Supplement, which stops while cash assets are over the limit. Tell Work and Income before the money arrives, ask how each of your payments will treat it, and get that answer in writing before you spend or move any of it.
