A direct cremation, sometimes called a no-service or simple cremation, is the cheapest legal way to have a body cremated in New Zealand: no chapel service, no viewing, and the body goes straight to the crematorium.

Based on one national provider's currently published prices, a direct cremation costs from $1,945 (Auckland) to $3,400 (Hawke's Bay), with most other regions falling between $2,100 and $2,850 (Value Cremations NZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). What the council actually charges for a cremation

Behind every cremation, whether direct or full-service, sits a council cremation fee that a funeral director pays and passes on. This is the cost the funeral home does not set and cannot discount.

FDANZ, the industry association, publishes council cremation costs nationally and reports the 2025 average at $920, up from $848 in 2024, a rise of about 8.5% (FDANZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). Individual council fees vary widely, and the table below shows the spread.

How much does Wellington City Council charge for cremation?

Wellington City Council's own published fee schedule lists cremation only (no chapel service) at $885, a half-hour committal service including cremation at $1,012, and a full one-hour chapel service including cremation at $1,079, all GST inclusive (Wellington City Council, Cremation fees, retrieved 9 September 2026). A public holiday fee of $757 applies on top for bookings on those days.

What is the most expensive part of a funeral?

Can you be cremated without a coffin in NZ?

No, not entirely without a container. Is a cheaper cremation casket a real way to reduce the bill?

Yes. FDANZ's own cost guidance notes that "lower price 'cremation' caskets may be available" alongside more expensive options within its published $1,200 to $5,000 casket range, so a family choosing a plain, combustible cremation casket rather than a premium timber one is making one of the more meaningful cost choices available to them (FDANZ, retrieved 9 September 2026). What happens to the casket during cremation?

The casket is not reused. A named funeral home explains that the cremator must reach over 540 degrees before loading, and the casket, described in law as the "suitable receptacle," goes into the cremator with the deceased; the nameplate is removed just before loading and stays with the cremated remains throughout the process to prevent any mix-up (Kapiti Coast Funeral Home, retrieved 9 September 2026).

The approval process, and why cremation is not immediate

Cremation cannot happen the day someone dies, because New Zealand law requires several sign-offs first, and this is the honest source of the delay rather than a fixed statutory waiting period.

A body cannot be cremated until a medical certificate of cause of death, or the coroner's release of the body, has been obtained; an application for cremation must then be made, cremation forms completed by a medical or nurse practitioner, and the documentation reviewed and approved by a Medical Referee before the cremation can proceed (Health New Zealand \| Te Whatu Ora, Cremation, retrieved 9 September 2026).

Why do you have to wait 3 days to cremate a body?

What not to do immediately after someone dies?

The immediate priorities are confirming the death (calling 111 if unexpected, or the person's doctor if expected and at home) and not disturbing the scene if unexpected, since police may need to attend; arranging cremation or burial has to wait until a medical certificate of death or the coroner's release of the body exists (Health New Zealand, retrieved 9 September 2026). Why are you not supposed to keep ashes in your house?

This is a cultural and personal question rather than a legal one, and New Zealand law does not prohibit keeping ashes at home. What is a Medical Referee, and why do they need to approve a cremation?

A Medical Referee is a role created under the Cremation Regulations 1973 specifically to check cremation applications independently of the treating doctor, and every crematorium authority must have one; their approval is required before a cremation, other than in narrow exceptions such as a stillborn child with the right certification, can proceed (Cremation Regulations 1973, retrieved 9 September 2026). Does a funeral home charge extra on top of the council cremation fee?

Yes, almost always, unless the family arranges a direct cremation with no funeral home involvement. Wellington City Council, as one example, charges $88 for ash scattering at its own crematorium and $50 for a non-resident, which shows that even scattering on council land is a paid, managed service rather than something done informally (Wellington City Council, retrieved 9 September 2026). Scattering on private land generally needs the landowner's permission, and public conservation land has its own rules; a funeral director or the relevant council or agency can advise on a specific location.

How much does an urn cost in NZ?
