The Funeral Directors Association of NZ (FDANZ) 2026 industry report puts the average full funeral for 50 attendees at $11,700 with cremation and $14,300 with burial, and an unattended cremation with no service at $4,700. The figures come from member funeral homes' typical prices for set scenarios in 2025 (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). They are survey averages, not fixed national prices, and council cemetery fees vary a great deal by area.
National benchmarks
| Scenario | Average | Range | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full funeral, cremation: 50 attendees at a funeral home, catering, celebrant, mid-price casket | $11,700 | $10,000 to $13,900 | FDANZ report, April 2026 (2025 member survey) |
| Same scenario, burial | $14,300 | $12,800 to $17,000 | Same |
| Unattended cremation, no service | $4,700 | Not published | Same |
FDANZ says directors are reluctant to quote an "average", so it asked member homes for typical prices against the scenario. It also says $10,000, once a common rule of thumb, is now well below a modest attended funeral. Our funeral cost guide breaks the bill down item by item.
How New Zealanders are farewelled
In 2025, 69% of those who died were cremated and 25% buried, and 60% of funerals were full funerals with the body or ashes present. About 40% were a private or family goodbye or an unattended cremation (FDANZ's report gives the split between those two differently on different pages, so we quote the combined figure). A celebrant or clergy member was used at 76% of funerals, a casket was present at 64% and 64% of families chose a viewing. Cremation rates differ by community: 78% of Europeans, 44% of Māori and 21% of Pacific peoples, among whom 70% were buried in a council ground. Of deaths in 2025, 74% had no pre-arrangement or pre-payment (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report).

Council fees side by side
Council schedules are built differently, so the "stack" below is our sum of plot (or burial right) plus a weekday adult burial fee for a resident, with each council's recipe. Several of these councils review fees each 1 July, so check the date. Each council has a page: Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Nelson, Tauranga and Wellington.
| Council and ground | Burial stack | Adult cremation | Fee year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland, Manukau lawn: right $5,360 + burial $1,410 | $6,770 | $750 | Page prints no year; read 20 Oct 2026 |
| Christchurch: plot $2,071 + interment $1,389 | $3,460 | None listed | 2026/27 |
| Wellington City, Mākara plaque lawn: plot, beam, maintenance, interment | $2,754 as printed | $885 (Karori) | Pages published 12 June 2026 |
| Porirua, Whenua Tapu: plot $1,250 + interment $1,300 | $2,550 | $725 | Headed 2026/27; page says from 1 Aug 2025 |
| Dunedin, main cemeteries: rights $2,863.40 + interment $2,061.10 + service fee $1,157.90 | $6,082.40 | $1,182.20 | 2026/27 |
| Tauranga, Pyes Pā: plot and maintenance $6,388 + burial $2,038 | $8,426 | $777 | As at 1 July 2026 |
| Nelson: plot $3,315 + burial $1,445 | $4,760 | $1,120.80 | 2026/27 |
Sources: Auckland Council, Christchurch City Council, Wellington City Council, Porirua City Council, Dunedin City Council, Tauranga City Council and Nelson City Council. Christchurch lists no cremation fee and no council-run cremation service appears in FDANZ's list. Hamilton's published page dates from 5 July 2022, so we do not list it as a current fee; FDANZ's July 2025 figures for Hamilton were $5,315 for burial and $695 for cremation.
The spread is wide: Tauranga's $8,426 is more than three times Wellington's $2,754 (our arithmetic), though the recipes differ. Tauranga's plot price includes maintenance in perpetuity and the memorial permit, and Wellington's total includes a beam and maintenance fee.
What FDANZ's own samples say
FDANZ gives two council averages, so always name the sample. Its 2026 report averages $4,865 for a council burial across a 15-council sample, with New Plymouth the highest at $7,207 and Taupō the lowest at $1,455 (July 2025 rates). Its separate council-cost document, covering 23 councils, shows a 2025 average of $4,359 for burial and $920 for cremation (FDANZ: council costs PDF). An ash plot plus interment adds about $1,300 to a cremation.
Published funeral director prices
Some directors publish price lists. Dils, on Auckland's North Shore, lists a full-service professional fee of $5,955 and a direct cremation professional fee of $3,030 (as at May 2026), with the crematorium fee, documentation and casket extra (Dils price list). Simplicity Funerals Christchurch lists a "Dignified" direct cremation plan from $4,215 including the cremation fee, a basic casket and the death certificate (Simplicity Funerals Christchurch). The two are not like for like. Our director price lists page and direct cremation costs explain how to compare them, and the section also covers natural burial, caskets, embalming, headstones and urns.
What help is available
| Source | Maximum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Work and Income Funeral Grant | $2,697.43 (as at 1 April 2026) | Income test applies only for a partner or child who died; the deceased's assets count in some cases |
| ACC funeral grant | Up to $8,236.40 | Only for a death from a covered injury; set by date of death |
| Veterans' Affairs funeral expenses | $3,297.09 (as of 1 April 2026) | Qualifying service or service-related death |
Sources: Work and Income, ACC and Veterans' Affairs. The Work and Income grant is the lesser of the maximum and the unmet balance, and prepaid funeral accounts and life insurance proceeds can count as assets. Against FDANZ's scenario averages, our arithmetic is that the Work and Income maximum equals about 23% of $11,700, 19% of $14,300 and 57% of $4,700, while ACC's maximum equals about 70%, 58% and 175%. One Whakatāne funeral director told FDANZ that most of its funerals are for low-income Māori families needing simple care and transfer to the marae, at average costs of around $5,000, and that families are left with several thousand dollars of debt even after a full grant. That is one director's account, not a national figure. See our funeral grant guide and paying for a funeral, or try the Work and Income grant checker and the funeral cost calculator.
Method and limits
Every figure here is from a named source and date; the sums marked "our arithmetic" or "our sum" are ours. Council fees are for a weekday adult resident, GST inclusive. We do not publish a QuoteHub "average funeral cost", and we do not hold current headstone prices, newspaper notice rates, water cremation prices or Karori Cemetery plot prices. Where a figure is missing, we say so rather than estimate.
If you want to plan ahead
Some people plan ahead with funeral insurance. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs, not the whole bill. For the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death (death within 90 days of the accident), and total premiums can end up larger than the benefit. Momentum Life is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best (Momentum Life: financial strength). The buttons on this page open Momentum's online application; see Momentum Life Funeral Cover and our funeral insurance guide. Saving, a prepaid plan or doing nothing are also options; a prepaid plan's first $10,000 is excluded from residential-care asset testing (Work and Income: Residential Care Subsidy).
Adviser's view
No single figure describes what a New Zealand funeral costs. The main national data is a trade-body survey that puts a full funeral with cremation at $11,700 on average and with burial at $14,300, and council fees alone vary by more than three times between areas. Use the numbers as a range to plan around, then get an itemised written quote.
