How do you get a Tower insurance quote online?

General information, not advice on your situation. Buying through Tower's online quote is direct, without advice. QuoteHub is a Tower partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission from Tower.

Tower quotes are built in its own online tool: you pick the cover you want, enter details about the house, contents or car, choose a cover level and see the price before you buy (Tower car insurance, boat insurance). The price is only as good as the details you type in, so a few minutes with your rego, your rebuild figure or your contents list first saves a wrong quote later. Tower no longer offers a multi-policy discount on new policies, so each policy is priced on its own details (Tower).

What to have ready before you start

Tower says that if you don't disclose car modifications and later claim, the claim could be declined and the policy cancelled (Tower). Gathering the details first also stops you guessing at a figure that turns out to be wrong.

Cover What Tower asks about
House The property's address, the sum insured (the cost to rebuild) and cover level
Contents Address, the total value of your belongings, and any specified items
Car Registration number, licence type, claims history, parking and regular drivers
Landlord Address and rebuild cost, for a property you rent out rather than live in
Boat Details of the boat, with multihulls and catamaran yachts quoted by phone rather than online

Sources for the table: house, contents, car, landlord and boat pages on Tower's site.

Car quotes: the details that change the answer

Tower's own checklist asks for your licence and licence type (learner, restricted or full), any claims or accidents in the last three years, where the car is parked and who drives it regularly. It also wants the make, type and number plate, and details of modifications such as suspension, engine or gearbox changes (Tower).

Two quick examples show why this matters. If a flatmate drives your hatchback every week, name them as a regular driver, because Tower's wording expects you to name regular drivers and to tell it when a new one starts (comprehensive wording). If you have fitted an aftermarket exhaust or lowered the suspension, list it even if it seems minor, because an undisclosed modification can lead to a declined claim and a policy cancelled or avoided back to the date you stopped disclosing (Tower).

Private car policies cover you for driving to work but not for using the car for work, so an on-road salesperson or tradie needs to look at commercial vehicle cover instead (Tower).

Car cover level Your own car Damage you cause to others' cars and property
Comprehensive Covers accidental damage Covered
Third party, fire and theft Fire and theft only Covered
Third party Not covered Covered

The table summarises Tower's car insurance page; the policy wording has the limits and exclusions. With comprehensive cover you can insure for market value (what the car is worth on the day it is damaged) or an agreed value (a figure you and Tower settle on, locked in for a year when the policy renews). That choice decides how a write-off or theft is paid out (Tower). The wording says repairs are capped at the least of the repair cost, the market value or the agreed value shown on your certificate (wording). QuoteHub's guide to Tower car insurance covers each level in more depth, and the guide to car insurance cost covers the price drivers.

House and contents quotes: get the rebuild figure right

Tower defines the sum insured as the total cost to rebuild your house, including demolition, debris removal, professional fees and council fees. It is not the market value, what you paid for the house or the value of the land (Tower). So a sale price or a rates valuation is the wrong starting number.

Tower points to the Cordell Sum Sure calculator: you enter your address and check the property details it lists. Floor area, land slope and access, construction materials, the number of storeys, the design style, detached garages and extras like pools, solar panels, outbuildings and retaining walls all feed the estimate (Tower). A 1960s brick bungalow with a pool and a detached garage needs all of those entered, not just the main floor area. QuoteHub's sum insured guide walks through the method.

Tower says it adjusts the sum insured before each renewal to keep up with building costs, and you should still check it yearly (Tower). A home insured on present day value rather than a sum insured is usually a pre-1950s home that has not been fully re-lined, re-wired or re-roofed, so check your certificate.

Tower also assesses earthquake, flood, landslide and sea surge risk at your address for house and landlord policies and shows risk ratings, with "unknown" where no data exists for a hazard (Tower). Tower's house levels differ in the extras they include:

House cover level Temporary accommodation, up to Hidden gradual water damage, up to
Standard $15,000 (Tower) $1,000 (Tower)
Plus $25,000 (Tower) $2,000 (Tower)
Premium $30,000 (Tower) $3,000 (Tower)

These are summary figures from Tower's page, and terms, excesses, limits and exclusions apply. QuoteHub's guide to Tower house insurance goes through the levels.

For contents, Tower's calculator estimates the total from details about your home and the people who live in it, then lets you edit a room-by-room breakdown and add special items such as an engagement ring or an antique lounge suite. Policies can limit individual items, so valuable ones may need listing, and a new e-bike, TV or jewellery is worth adding (Tower). Renters can quote contents alone, as QuoteHub's renters insurance guide explains.

What drives the price Tower shows

Tower publishes the components of each premium, and they differ by cover:

Tower says a higher excess may lower the premium, optional benefits raise it, and you should review cover regularly so you are neither over nor under insured (Tower). A higher excess only makes sense if you could pay it when a claim happens.

The multi-policy discount has ended

Tower no longer offers the multi-policy discount on new policies. Policies already receiving it keep it until their next renewal, though for a small number it may end earlier. Tower says it has no replacement and will tell you at renewal how your premium changes (Tower).

Holding several policies with Tower still has practical effects. If one event leads to claims on more than one eligible policy, you may pay only the single highest excess, subject to terms and conditions. You can also mix cover levels across house, contents and car, and manage everything in My Tower (Tower). House and contents levels can be paired freely, for example House Plus with Contents Premium (Tower). Other insurers sell the same types of cover, so a quote from any provider is worth reading against its wording.

Questions people ask

Is a Tower insurance quote free?

Tower describes its online quote as quick and easy (Tower), and its pages mention no fee for getting one, though you should check the tool itself. A quote is not a policy, so cover starts only when you buy and the policy start date applies.

Can I get a Tower quote for house and contents together?

Yes. Tower sells house and contents separately and lets you pick and mix levels, so you can quote both and choose different levels for each (Tower). QuoteHub's guide to house and contents insurance explains how the two fit together.

Does Tower still have a multi-policy discount?

Not for new policies. Existing policies keep the discount until their next renewal, with a small number ending earlier (Tower).

Should I choose agreed value or market value on a car quote?

That depends on how you want a write-off or theft settled. Market value is what the car is worth on the day it is damaged, while agreed value is a set figure you and Tower settle on, locked in for a year when the policy renews (Tower). Read both definitions on your certificate before you pick.

Can I cancel after I buy?

Tower's car wording has a free look period: you can cancel within 15 days of the start date if you have made no claims, and Tower then refunds the premiums and treats the policy as never having started. Check your own policy wording for the terms that apply to other cover types (Tower's comprehensive wording).

Can I change my cover after I get a quote?

Before you buy, you can rerun the quote with a different cover level or excess. After you buy, My Tower lets you update your excess, sum insured, agreed value and optional benefits (Tower). QuoteHub is a Tower partner, so read the wording of the level you pick, and see the Tower Insurance overview and the guide to making a claim.

Adviser's view

QuoteHub's read: the quote is only as accurate as the details you enter, so the sum insured, the drivers and any modifications matter more than the speed of the form.
