Life Insurance Cost at 55 in NZ: Premiums, Term and Funeral Cover

For $500,000 of stepped life cover in New Zealand, a non-smoking 55-year-old woman is priced at about $130 to $160 a month and a non-smoking man at about $170 to $200, across insurers including AIA and Fidelity Life on QuoteHub's Premium Index of published rate cards as at 8 September 2026. A smoker of the same age pays roughly double to two and a quarter times that. Fifty-five sits inside the steepest decade on the stepped curve, with the average premium climbing 270% for men and 201% for women by 65, which is why people this age often ask a licensed adviser whether to reduce cover, cap a term at 65 or 70, or use a funeral policy instead.

In short

Fifty-five is when the stepped curve starts to genuinely bite, and insurers begin drawing lines too: Fidelity Life stops taking standalone applicants at 64, Momentum Life's guaranteed-acceptance products close at 65. This page prices $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 of cover at 55, then works through reducing cover, capping a term at 65 or 70, and the funeral alternative.

Momentum Life prices $250,000 only, guaranteed acceptance with a two-year stand-down (Momentum Life), so it is excluded above that.

The loading is a multiplier on the age-based rate, so it keeps growing every year a policy is held. Most insurers reassess you as a non-smoker after a defined smoke-free period. See our guide on smokers and life insurance in NZ.

Does gender still change the price at 55?

Yes. A non-smoking man pays 23% to 25% more than a non-smoking woman at 55, a wider gap than at 45. Reducing cover at 55: a policy that runs to 65, to 70, or for life?

Most New Zealand life cover carries no fixed term once accepted, so reducing cover at 55 is a decision you make, not one a policy makes for you. AIA and Partners Life both accept new applicants to 70 with no set maximum, and Chubb Life's Assurance Extra Life Cover publishes no maximum entry age at all: cover does not expire (AIA; Partners Life; Chubb Life).

A handful of products build an end date in, the closest New Zealand gets to a genuine "term to 65 or 70" choice. Fidelity Life's Platinum Plus accepts standalone applicants to 64, cover to 70, or to 69 accelerated, where cover then runs for life (Fidelity Life underwriting guide). Partners Life's Mortgage Repayment Cover shows the pattern in miniature: Yearly Stepped runs to 65, non-guaranteed Level to 70 (factsheet).

NZ Superannuation starts at 65 (Work and Income), the practical reason many reviews land there: a smaller mortgage and NZ Super income reduce what a policy needs to replace. Reducing the sum insured lowers the premium immediately; cancelling outright forfeits future-insurability options. Our stepped-versus-level analysis works the maths if level looks better.

Is guaranteed-acceptance or funeral cover a cheaper alternative at 55?

At 55 you can still apply for fully underwritten life cover with every insurer here, but a simplified, no-medical-exam policy is a realistic alternative, trading a lower cap for fewer health checks. Momentum Life's Platinum Life Insurance accepts applicants 18 to 65 with no medical exams, blood tests or paperwork required in most cases, capped at $750,000 for a 55-to-60-year-old and $500,000 from 61 (Momentum Life).

Standalone funeral insurance sits below that again: six insurers sell it, every one guaranteed acceptance, capped at $30,000 or less.

Insurer Entry ages Maximum cover Non-accidental death covered from
NZ Seniors 18 to 79 $30,000 Day one, no stand-down
Momentum Life 40 to 75 $30,000 24 months
Chubb Life 50 to 80 $30,000 24 months, refunded if within it
AA Life Not published $30,000 Not published

It is not cheap per dollar of cover: none of the four insurers above publish a flat rate card for funeral cover, and each quotes individually by age and cover amount, generally priced higher per dollar of sum insured than underwritten life cover because no health questions are asked. It suits final costs with no medical underwriting, not replacing income. See our full funeral insurance comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does $500,000 of life insurance cost at 55 in NZ?

On QuoteHub's Premium Index, indicative monthly cost from insurers' published rate cards as at 8 September 2026, $500,000 of stepped cover at 55 runs about $130 a month for a non-smoking woman to about $200 for a non-smoking man, across insurers including AIA. Smokers pay roughly double to two and a third of those figures.

Should I reduce my life insurance cover at 55, or let it run to 65 or 70?

Most policies from AIA, Partners Life and Chubb Life have no fixed expiry and run past 65 or 70 unless you act; Fidelity Life's Platinum Plus is one of the few with a built-in term, to 70 on its standalone option. Reducing the sum insured lowers the premium immediately, unlike cancelling, which forfeits future-insurability options.

Is funeral cover cheaper than full life insurance at 55?

Per dollar of cover, no: guaranteed-acceptance and funeral policies charge more, because the insurer has not assessed your health. They still do a narrower job well, final costs with no medical exam, capped at $30,000 for standalone funeral cover, or up to $750,000 on Momentum Life's simplified, no-medical-exam Platinum Life Insurance at 55.

Do smokers still pay more at 55 than at other ages?

Yes: the loading is a multiplier on the age-based rate, so it grows every year a stepped policy is held. Telling your insurer once you qualify as smoke-free is one of the largest savings still available at 55.
