Is AA Life insurance good value for your needs?
No published source shows AA Life is cheaper than other New Zealand insurers, and QuoteHub does not rank on price. AA recalculates the premium every policy anniversary for age and cover amount, so it rises two ways. A $100 Prezzy Card is offered on new policies until 15 November 2026, with conditions. Compare total cost over ten years, not the first month.
In short
- AA publishes only "from" examples on its cover pages, each for one profile: Life Cover from $7.13 a week for $500,000 (40-year-old female AA Member, non-smoker; AA: Life Cover), and Funeral Cover from $14.28 a week for $10,000 (66-year-old female AA Member, non-smoker; AA: Funeral cover), as read on 20 October 2026.
- AA Life is not in QuoteHub's Premium Index, so we have no like-for-like AA range for life cover.
- The Prezzy Card needs the first two months of premiums paid and the policy in force for two months before the card is processed.
- Value depends on how the premium behaves after year one, which the table below lets you test.
Is AA Life cheaper than other NZ providers?
We cannot say, and neither can a headline. Premiums depend on age, gender, smoking status, occupation, cover amount and health answers. AA Life Cover is advertised only with a "from" example (below), and your own rate comes from AA's quote. QuoteHub's Premium Index prices six adviser-channel insurers (AIA, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, Momentum Life and Partners Life), and AA Life is not one of them. Asteron underwrites AA Life, but AA sets its own rates and discounts, so the Index cannot stand in for an AA quote.
What the Index does show is how steeply stepped cover rises with age. These are indicative monthly ranges for $500,000 of life cover, non-smoking man, standard rates and class 1 occupation, taken from insurers' published rate cards as at 8 September 2026 and rounded outward:
| Age | Range across the insurers that priced the row |
|---|---|
| 30 | $30 to $40 |
| 40 | $40 to $50 |
| 50 | $90 to $120 |
| 60 | $300 to $375 |
| 65 | $625 to $725 |
Your own premium depends on underwriting. See the Index method and life insurance quotes. These are not AA prices.
AA's own Life Cover page shows "From $7.13/week", based on $500,000 of cover for a 40-year-old female AA Member who is a non-smoker (read 20 October 2026). That is one teaser profile with the 5% AA Member discount. It is a different profile from the Index rows, so we draw no comparison from it.
How AA Life premiums behave
AA's wording says the premium can change on each policy anniversary. AA recalculates it from its rates at the time, the person's gender, occupation and smoking status, the cover amount, and their age on the next birthday, and gives 28 days' written notice (Base Policy Wording, page 5). That is a stepped structure in effect, and the wording's Premium Freeze Benefit describes premiums "increasing with age".
There is a second driver. On each anniversary AA raises the Life Cover amount by the greater of CPI and 2%, up to $1.5 million, and the premium rises to match unless you decline the increase (Life Cover Policy Wording, page 6). Arithmetic on the 2% floor shows the effect on a $500,000 start: about $552,000 after 5 years, $609,000 after 10 and $743,000 after 20. Higher CPI means more. More cover is worth having, but you pay for it as well as for the extra years.
You can freeze the premium from any anniversary. The catch is stated in the wording: AA then permanently reduces the cover to what the fixed premium can buy, based on age, gender, smoking and health status.
What the $100 Prezzy Card offer requires
AA's page offers a $100 Prezzy Card on a new Life Cover, Income Protection or Serious Illness policy taken out with a promo code, with "Offer ends 15 November 2026, T&Cs apply" (AA Life Insurance, 20 October 2026). The conditions published:
- The first two months of premiums must be paid, and the policy must be in force for two months before the card is processed.
- One card per policy, and not for renewing policies.
- You are ineligible if an Asteron policy of the same type was cancelled within the three months before the offer.
A one-off $100 and a premium paid for years are different things. The offer is worth knowing about, but it should not decide which policy you buy. If the premium trajectory is worse, $100 will not make up the difference.
A method to compare total cost over 5, 10 and 20 years
Ask for the policy summary for each year, then fill in a table like this. The columns are the point; the amounts are yours.
| Year | AA premium (from the policy summary) | Other insurer, stepped | Other insurer, level | Cover amount that year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ||||
| 5 | ||||
| 10 | ||||
| 20 |
Add up the premiums for each insurer to years 5, 10 and 20, and compare that with the cover in force. For what a level premium does and does not guarantee, read stepped versus level premiums. AA's wording describes a premium that can change every year; ask any insurer you compare whether its level premium can change.
Value for particular situations
Seniors. AA Life Cover takes ages 16 to 59, so older buyers look at AA Funeral Cover (50 to 79) or other products. AA's published funeral example is for a 66-year-old female AA Member, $10,000, non-smoker. AA gives a 5% AA Member discount on the total premium and a 20% joint discount on Funeral Cover if two people apply within 48 hours. As with any funeral policy, total premiums can add up to more than the benefit, and the benefit may not meet the whole funeral. No source compares AA's price with other insurers; our funeral insurance cost guide covers ranges.
Couples. AA's Life Cover wording allows a policy to be owned jointly; the cover is on a person insured. Southern Cross Life & Living is one person per policy. Our couples guide explains the options.
New parents. The birth or adoption of a child is a listed life event for AA's Life Event Increase Benefit, usable before the person insured's 60th birthday. We cannot say that AA or a competitor is better for parents.
Switching to AA from another insurer
Keep the old policy running until the new one is in force. The FMA warns about new qualifying periods, pre-existing exclusions and different premiums (FMA: Insurance). AA gives a 30-day cooling-off period with a full premium refund if no claim has been made. Our guide to switching life insurance has the checks.
Waiting periods before AA pays
Life Cover has no general waiting period in the wording we read, but excludes self-inflicted death for 13 months after cover starts. Serious Illness and Cancer Care have 90-day stand-downs, and Funeral Cover pays for non-accidental death only after 24 months. AA says it usually pays within 48 hours of accepting a Life Cover claim.
When guaranteed acceptance is more practical
If you are over 59, expect health answers to cause trouble, or want cover without any questions, Momentum's Quick Life takes ages 18 to 65 with no health questions. It excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years, and its premiums step each year until 75 and are then fixed. A healthy person can usually get more cover for less with fully underwritten cover through an adviser. Momentum Life Limited holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair): see its financial strength page.
