Can you get a life insurance quote without giving personal details?

You can see an indicative price range for life insurance in New Zealand without giving a name, phone number or email. It needs only an age, sex, smoker status and cover amount, and QuoteHub's Premium Index tables publish ranges on that basis. A quote you can buy, and a policy, are different: under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009, an insurer must obtain and verify a customer's identity before it starts the relationship.

In short

What an indicative range needs

An indicative range is a published figure for a typical person, not a quote for you. The inputs are few. QuoteHub's Premium Index shows monthly ranges by age, sex, smoker status and sum insured, from insurers' published rate cards as at 8 September 2026, stepped, occupation class 1, standard rates with no loadings or exclusions. Nothing is typed in, so no contact details are collected. The method page explains how the ranges are built.

Momentum's wording lists the same kind of inputs for its own pricing. Quick Life premiums use age, gender, smoking status and benefit amount (Momentum Life: Quick Life wording, November 2025). That is why a range can be shown without personal details, and also why it cannot be final: health, occupation and pastimes can move the price on underwritten cover. What each stage needs

Stage What you get What is needed Contact details needed?
1. Indicative range A published range for a typical person Age, sex, smoker status, cover amount No, on QuoteHub's tables
2. A quote from an insurer or adviser A price for you, sometimes still subject to underwriting Depends on the insurer and the site. We have not tested each insurer's quote form, so check what the page asks before you start Varies
3. Application and underwriting An offer, or terms, or a decline Full name, date of birth, address and identity checks; health and lifestyle answers; or, for guaranteed acceptance, the application details only Yes in practice

Stage 2 is where people get caught out. The word "quote" is used for stage 1 and stage 3 alike. A figure shown on a screen before you have been underwritten is still indicative.

Why insurers ask for identity at the application

A life insurer is a "financial institution" under the AML/CFT Act, because it issues life insurance policies as an insurer (s 5). The Act says a reporting entity must carry out standard customer due diligence when it establishes a business relationship with a new customer (s 14). It must obtain the person's full name, date of birth and address (s 15). It must take reasonable steps to satisfy itself that the information, other than the address, is correct, and do that before the relationship begins, unless a narrow exception applies (s 16). This is why a policy cannot be taken out anonymously.

We have read the Act's text. We have not examined the regulations or supervisor guidance that can adjust how those duties apply to a given product, so what an insurer asks for is its decision and may go beyond this list.

Why they also ask for a phone number and email

The Act does not list a phone number or email. Insurers ask for them for operating reasons, and the documents show several:

If you would rather not talk to anyone, some insurers advertise online purchase. AIA's life insurance page offers "Buy life insurance online in a few steps" (AIA New Zealand), and Momentum's Quick Life is applied for online with no health questions. Neither removes the identity step, and an insurer can still contact you.

What you must tell the insurer when you apply

Once you apply for underwritten cover, you are asked about health, family history, occupation and lifestyle. Amounts matter. Fidelity's guide shows that for up to $500,000 of life cover an application form is enough at every age band, with medical evidence starting from $500,001 for ages 61 and over and at higher amounts for younger applicants. Chubb Life's published guide has the same $500,000 line, with a personal statement below it (Chubb Life: Essential underwriting guide v8). These are minimums; anything you disclose can trigger more.

Answer fully. The Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO) says "the law says that there is an obligation on insureds to disclose all material information" (IFSO). From 15 November 2027 (not yet in force), the Contracts of Insurance Act 2024 replaces that with a duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, and what a policyholder tells a specified intermediary, which includes an adviser paid commission by the insurer, is treated as told to the insurer (Contracts of Insurance Act 2024). The documents needed for life insurance page lists what to have ready.

How to look without getting sales follow-up

  1. Start with published ranges. The Premium Index asks for nothing.
  2. Read the privacy notice before you type anything. The Privacy Act 2020 says an agency may collect personal information only if it is necessary for a lawful purpose, and may not require identifying information if the purpose does not need it (information privacy principle 1, Privacy Act 2020).
  3. Check who will contact you. QuoteHub's privacy policy says giving details is voluntary, health questions on its forms are optional, and the partner firm that receives an enquiry may contact you by phone, email or text, which you can opt out of at any time.
  4. If you use Momentum's application yourself, QuoteHub's privacy policy says you enter your details directly on Momentum Life's pages under Momentum's own privacy policy, and that the link carries no name, contact details or health information. Momentum's adviser console shows QuoteHub's advisers whether an application started through the link was started, completed or paid.
  5. Ask what a form is for. If a field is marked optional, you can leave it blank.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get life insurance with no phone call?

Some products are applied for online. Quick Life asks no health questions and can be completed online. Underwritten cover often involves a phone interview. Fidelity says it uses telephone underwriting wherever possible.

Can I get a quote without an email address?

An indicative range, yes. For an insurer's own quote or an application, it depends on the form. We have not tested each insurer's form, so check what it asks before you start.

Is an online price the price I will pay?

Not necessarily. An indicative price assumes standard rates. Underwriting can add loadings or exclusions, or decline cover.
