How to check seniors life insurance legitimacy
To check a seniors life insurance seller in New Zealand, find who issues the policy, look the provider up on the Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR), and read the written policy wording before you pay. Being on the FSPR is not a licence. Providers selling to retail customers must also belong to an approved dispute resolution scheme.
In short
- The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) says that being on the FSPR "does not mean" a provider is licensed or regulated by the FMA, and that dealing with an unlicensed provider makes it "very unlikely you will recover your money if things go wrong", especially if they are overseas.
- A policy can be legitimate and still disappoint. A 24-month accident-only window, premiums that rise with age, a low rating and a commission built into the premium are all disclosed features, not fraud.
- The free-look periods we found come from the policy wording, not from a statutory right we could find. Momentum gives 30 days and AIA gives 15 days from receiving the policy document.
- Four approved schemes handle complaints. Start with the provider, then use its scheme, which is free.
A seniors life insurance scam is a sale in which a person or business takes your money without providing the cover they describe, or hides the terms that decide whether it pays. That is different from a legitimate product with restrictive terms, and most of the worry people have is about the second. Both matter, and they need different responses: a scam needs you to stop and report, while a restrictive policy needs you to read, compare and decide. The checks below work for both. They use what the FMA, the policy wordings and the insurers' own pages say. We did not source a regulator list of typical scam patterns in life insurance, so we describe none, and we make no claim about how common fraud is.
Step 1: Find out who the insurer is, not just the brand
The name on an advertisement is often not the company that pays a claim. NZ Seniors and OneChoice are issued by Pinnacle Life Limited and distributed by Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited; AA Life is underwritten by Asteron Life Limited; Golden Insurance is issued by Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited (NZ Seniors; AA Life; Golden Insurance). A seller who cannot name the issuing insurer, or whose documents do not, is a reason to stop. Momentum Life Limited (FSP472286) is a licensed life insurer that underwrites its own products. See who owns NZ Seniors for one example of brand versus insurer.
Step 2: Look the provider up on the FSPR
The FSPR is an online register of the people, businesses and organisations that offer financial services in New Zealand. It can show a provider's business address, services, any licence or authorisation status and its dispute resolution scheme (FMA). The FMA's warning is specific: registration involves only limited criminal checks, does not confirm the provider is based in New Zealand, and is not a licence. For advice, look for a licence. Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver is a licensed Financial Advice Provider, FSP712931, and you can check us the same way.
Step 3: Check the insurer is licensed and read its rating properly
New Zealand life insurers are licensed by the Reserve Bank, which keeps a register of licensed insurers. A financial strength rating is a separate matter. A.M. Best describes its rating as an opinion of an insurer's ability to meet its ongoing obligations, not a recommendation to buy or cancel any policy. A low rating is a reason to look harder, not proof of wrongdoing. Momentum Life Limited has a B (Fair) rating, affirmed 11 February 2026, which Momentum's own table puts in its "Vulnerable" range (Momentum). Pinnacle Life holds B+ (Good). The same letter means different things at different agencies, so name the agency every time.
Step 4: Read the written wording before you pay
Ask for the policy wording and the key terms in writing. The FMA says: "Get everything in writing to help ensure there's no dispute later on" (FMA). Momentum publishes both of its policy wordings. Look for four things: the early-death window, what is excluded, whether premiums can change, and when cover ends. See how funeral insurance works and what guaranteed acceptance is.
Step 5: Tell a real red flag from a policy you do not like
| What you find | What it is |
|---|---|
| Accident-only cover for the first 24 months (Momentum, AA Life, Chubb Life) or 12 months (NZ Seniors, OneChoice) | A disclosed term of a legitimate product |
| Premiums that can add up to more than the benefit | A documented feature; Momentum's wording says total premiums could exceed the benefit |
| Stepped premiums that rise yearly | How stepped cover works; the FMA says most premiums rise annually with age or inflation |
| A B (Fair) rating | A published opinion of financial strength, not evidence of fraud |
| A commission paid to the seller | Normal and required to be disclosed; the FMA says most insurance advisers receive commission built into the premium. NZ Seniors' disclosure says Pinnacle pays Greenstone up to 62% of each premium |
| No named insurer, no wording, or no way to read terms before paying | A real red flag |
| A seller not on the FSPR, or showing registration as if it were a licence | A real red flag |
| An overseas provider with no New Zealand dispute scheme | A real red flag; the FMA says money is very unlikely to be recovered |
| Pressure to decide now | A red flag: the Code of Professional Conduct 2025 requires advice providers to treat clients fairly, with no undue pressure |
An unwelcome term is a reason not to buy. It is not a reason to report fraud.
Step 6: Know what the free look is, and is not
The free look is a period in which you can cancel for a refund. In the wordings we read it comes from the policy itself, and we found no statutory cooling-off right for life insurance in the text of the Contracts of Insurance Act 2024, which is not yet in force (15 November 2027). Momentum's two wordings give 30 days with a full refund if no claim has been made, counted from the acceptance date for Funeral Insurance and from the policy start for Quick Life. AIA's wording gives 15 days from receiving the policy document. For any other insurer, ask for the period in writing. A seller who will not state a cancellation period in writing is a warning sign; one who states a short period is just giving you a term to weigh.
Step 7: Do not cancel what you have until the new cover starts
A seller who urges you to cancel what you already hold deserves caution, because an old policy can be hard to replace at an older age. The FMA's guidance is to keep the old policy running until the new one has started; see common mistakes with seniors life insurance for why. Be complete in every health answer on underwritten cover; insurers can reduce or avoid a claim for non-disclosure, as published cases from the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO) show (IFSO).
If something is wrong: who to contact
Every business offering retail financial services must belong to an approved dispute resolution scheme. There are four: the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, IFSO, Financial Services Complaints (FSCL) and the Financial Dispute Resolution Service. The provider's disclosure or the FSPR names its scheme. Complain to the provider first. For a Momentum policy, that means Momentum (0800 108 108, complaints acknowledged within 2 business days), then IFSO, which is free and whose assessment binds Momentum. The FMA takes complaints about wider issues but cannot obtain remedies for individuals. If you have paid money to someone you now doubt, tell your bank straight away.

Who we are
General information, not advice. Advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy through our link; see how we are paid and our disclosure. A complaint about QuoteHub's own service goes to the scheme named on the disclosure page. Last updated 20 October 2026. The buttons on this page open Momentum's own online quote; before you use them, remember that Funeral Insurance pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months and Quick Life excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for 2 years.
Frequently asked questions
Is senior life insurance a scam?
Seniors life insurance is a category of products, not one company, so no single answer fits. Products from licensed insurers are legitimate even when their terms are restrictive. Use the seven steps to check each seller.
Is senior life insurance reputable?
Reputation belongs to the insurer and the seller, not the category. Check the issuing insurer's licence, its published rating and the seller's FSPR entry, and read the wording.
Can I trust a cold call about funeral cover?
We have no source on cold calls specifically. Ask for the insurer's name and the written wording, check the FSPR, and do not pay on the call.
