Who owns NZ Seniors insurance?

New Zealand Seniors is a trading name of Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited, which distributes and promotes insurance. The policies are issued by Pinnacle Life Limited. NZ Seniors is a private company: nothing on its pages claims a government connection, and the SuperGold Card is a separate scheme supported by the Ministry of Social Development.

In short

Who owns NZ Seniors, and who issues the policy?

The brand and the insurer are two different companies, and it helps to keep them apart.

The brand and distributor. NZ Seniors' disclosure page says that New Zealand Seniors is a trading name of Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited. Greenstone distributes and promotes the products. It is a financial advice provider: the same page says it is on the Financial Service Providers Register and licensed by the Financial Markets Authority to provide a financial advice service, with staff acting as nominated representatives. It also says staff give advice on whether the products may suit you and do not compare them with other providers. The site's pages do not say who owns Greenstone itself, so we have not named any owner.

The insurer. The footer of the NZ Seniors site says: "All New Zealand Seniors insurance products are issued by Pinnacle Life Limited" and are "distributed and promoted by Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited". Pinnacle is the company that takes the insurance risk and pays the claim. Pinnacle's A.M. Best rating is B+ (Good) with an issuer credit rating of bbb-, and its policy payments are transacted through its Rimu Statutory Fund (Pinnacle Life: Financial strength).

The sister brand. OneChoice is a second brand using the same insurer and the same distributor. Our OneChoice funeral insurance page covers its terms, and the Pinnacle Life page covers the insurer.

Is NZ Seniors connected to the SuperGold Card or the government?

We found no sign of it. NZ Seniors' own pages describe it as a private distributor of Pinnacle products, and the pages we read (the home page, disclosure and grants pages) do not mention the SuperGold Card at all, either to claim a link or to deny one.

The SuperGold website says "SuperGold helps you stretch your money further with instant discounts and special offers" and "Supported by the Ministry of Social Development" (SuperGold). That site says nothing about insurance. So if you have seen "NZ Seniors" next to "Gold Card" in a search, treat them as two unrelated things: a card that gets you discounts at participating businesses, and a company that sells insurance. Neither one qualifies you for the other.

If you want to check a government payment or entitlement, use Work and Income or govt.nz directly, not an insurer's site.

What about the "bonus" payments people search for?

The phrase "NZ Seniors bonus payment" mixes up several different things, so be specific about what you saw.

How are NZ Seniors paid, and what does that mean for you?

Greenstone's disclosure statement (prepared 25 March 2024) says Pinnacle pays it commission of up to 62% of each premium for NZ Seniors, paid on a level basis over the life of the policy. Staff salaries come from Greenstone, any staff commission is capped at 5% of first-year premiums, and clawback applies if a policy ends within a short period (NZ Seniors: Disclosure).

That does not make the product good or bad. It does mean that part of what you pay each year goes to the distributor rather than into claims. Commission is normal across insurance distribution, and QuoteHub is also paid: QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner, and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy through our link. What does NZ Seniors funeral cover look like on the facts?

From NZ Seniors' pages (read 20 October 2026) and its funeral FAQ:

How does NZ Seniors compare with Momentum Life's structure?

NZ Seniors Momentum Life
Who sells Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited, trading as New Zealand Seniors Momentum Life Limited, selling its own products
Who insures Pinnacle Life Limited Momentum Life Limited
Financial strength (A.M. Best) Pinnacle: B+ (Good) Momentum: B (Fair), in what Momentum's own table calls the "Vulnerable" range; see Momentum's financial strength page
Funeral cover entry ages 18 to 79 40 to 75
Early window 12 months, accidental death or serious injury 24 months, accidental death only; all premiums refunded for another cause
Premiums stop 85 89th birthday
Dispute scheme IFSO IFSO

The differences matter: Momentum's Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, with a $3,000 to $30,000 benefit, and accidental death pays three times the benefit where death happens within 90 days of the accident. It has no terminal illness benefit. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral, whichever insurer you choose. Momentum's Quick Life, for ages 18 to 65, excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years. Momentum is not open to anyone over 75, so if you are older, NZ Seniors' funeral cover to 79 may be among the options a licensed adviser can walk you through. The buttons on this page lead to Momentum's own application for those who fit.

What should you check in the wording before accepting any perk?

  1. The early window. How long is accidental-only cover, and are premiums refunded if the person dies of illness inside it? NZ Seniors' pages say no refund after cooling-off; Momentum's refunds all premiums for that person.
  2. The word "guaranteed". Acceptance being guaranteed does not mean every death is paid from day one.
  3. Where a perk is written. If it is only in an advertisement or a phone call, it is not a policy term.
  4. The total you will pay. Add the premiums to your expected age. In one IFSO funeral insurance case the policy gave no warning that premiums could exceed the sum insured, and the insurer refunded all premiums (IFSO case study).

How do you complain if an advertised benefit is disputed?

NZ Seniors' disclosure statement lists a complaints line (0800 400 290) and says it will try to resolve complaints at first contact, otherwise acknowledging them in writing within 2 working days. If the matter is not resolved, Greenstone is a member of the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO), free and independent: 0800 888 202, ifso.nz. Contact numbers on the NZ Seniors site include 0800 493 010 for general enquiries and 0800 400 190 for claims.
