How to get a Chubb Life insurance quote in NZ
You can get a Chubb Life quote two ways: Chubb's online tool for its Life & Living range, or an adviser for the fuller Assurance Extra range. Chubb says premiums are based on your sex, age, medical history, family medical history, whether you smoke, and the sum insured. Chubb Life's life, critical illness and expenses cover is underwritten, so what you are finally offered depends on the assessment of your answers, not only the first quote.
In short
- Life & Living has an instant online quote and application; Assurance Extra is built with an adviser (Chubb Life & Living, retrieved 20 October 2026).
- The inputs that move the price most are age, smoker status, sum insured and health. Build (BMI) can add a loading even when no medical is required.
- This page gives no Chubb dollar prices. Chubb publishes no rate table for these ranges; a quote reflects your own answers.
- Premium structure matters as much as the first-year price: stepped premiums rise each year, level options are priced higher at the start.
- For cover with no health questions, Momentum Life's Quick Life (ages 18 to 65) is the alternative on this site; it restricts the first 2 years.
Step 1: Choose the route
| Route | Range | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Life & Living: Life Cover, Critical Illness Cover, Expenses Cover | "Get a Quote" tool on Chubb's site, then apply online. Chubb's page also gives 0800 900 047 or a form to ask for an adviser. |
| Adviser | Assurance Extra: master policy built from nine covers | A licensed adviser quotes and applies for you. Chubb Life also employs its own insurance advisers. |
Chubb Life's life page lists its own team of advisers, brokers and distributors, and an online quote and application (Chubb Life NZ, retrieved 20 October 2026). The two ranges are built differently, so a quote for one is not a quote for the other. For the products themselves, read our Chubb Life review and the Chubb Life page.
Step 2: Have your answers ready
A quote only means something if the inputs are true. Gather these first:
- Age and sex. Chubb lists biological sex and age as premium factors.
- Smoker status. Chubb's underwriting guide treats you as a non-smoker only if you have had no tobacco and no nicotine products, including vaping, gum, patches or chewing tobacco, for 12 months; it adds that marijuana used more than once a week can incur a loading (Chubb underwriting guide, May 2025, retrieved 20 October 2026).
- Height and weight. The same guide says a BMI of 18 to 36.9 needs no mandatory medical "though a loading for BMI may still apply"; 37 or above needs a build exam plus HbA1c, lipids and liver tests.
- Medical and family medical history. Chubb says you may be asked about both.
- Sum insured. Life Cover on Life & Living can run up to $1.5 million.
- Occupation, for adviser-built cover. The guide says a person with two occupations is rated on the more hazardous one.
- Residency. Chubb generally needs citizenship or permanent residence; work-visa holders need a visa of at least 24 months with 6 months left, plus an "Expiry of Visa Exclusion".
Check the sum insured against what the cover must do before you start; our life cover guide shows how.
Step 3: Read what drives the price
Age is the largest driver. In QuoteHub's Premium Index (a snapshot of insurers' published rate cards on 8 September 2026, covering six insurers including Chubb Life, stepped, non-smoker, occupation class 1, standard rates), a man's $500,000 premium rises roughly eighteen-fold between 30 and 65. These are panel ranges across the insurers that priced each row, rounded outward, not Chubb prices:
| Age | Typical monthly cost, $500,000 non-smoker man | Typical monthly cost, $500,000 smoker man |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | $40 to $50 | $90 to $110 |
| 50 | $90 to $120 | $200 to $275 |
| 60 | $300 to $375 | $675 to $800 |
Your own premium depends on underwriting. Method and caveats are on the methodology page, and ranges by age and sex are on life insurance quotes.
Smoking can more than double it in midlife. On the same snapshot the smoker multiple over the non-smoker quote peaks at about 2.2 to 2.4 times in the mid-forties to mid-fifties. Staying nicotine-free for 12 months before applying would cut a monthly premium by about 33 to 57 per cent at most ages. See smoker versus non-smoker.
Health and build can add a loading. A loading is an extra amount added to the premium for a higher risk. Chubb's own adviser article on diabetes gives an example of how this works: a well-controlled Type 2 diagnosis at an older age with no complications "may have a loading of 50-75%", while Type 1 is most commonly offered life cover only with a loading of at least 100% (Chubb: Diving into diabetes). That is one insurer's guidance on one condition, not a promise for anyone; terms depend on the individual.
Discounts exist but have conditions. Chubb offers 10 per cent off for Life Cover plus one other cover and 12.5 per cent for Life plus two, subject to minimum sums insured, and a 15 per cent Lifetime Reward until 28 February 2027 for non-smokers with a BMI between 18.5 and 26.99 when cover starts (Chubb Life & Living, retrieved 20 October 2026). Check the current terms when you apply.
Step 4: Understand the premium structure
Two policies with the same first-year price can cost very different amounts later. Chubb's Assurance Extra Life Cover brochure lists premium review periods of 1 year, 5 years, 5 years with 5 per cent stepping, 10 years, and to age 65, 70, 80 or 100, with premiums recalculated at the end of each period on the sum insured, age and "changes to Chubb Life's protection premium rates or relevant laws" (Chubb brochure, retrieved 20 October 2026). The Life & Living page does not say whether its premiums are stepped or level, so ask. The Financial Markets Authority says cover that is cheaper at first can cost more over time (FMA: Insurance). Our guide to stepped versus level premiums sets out the difference, and we give no annual increase figure because none is published.
Step 5: Expect assessment, not just a number
At quote stage you give answers; at application the insurer assesses them. Chubb warns that increasing cover during assessment "could take longer as additional information may be required". For sums up to $500,000 Chubb's guide asks only for a personal statement at every age band, and from $500,001 for people aged 61 and over it asks for a higher evidence level (Code A). Those are minimums; disclosed conditions can trigger more. The Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman publishes cases where insurers avoided or reduced claims over non-disclosure, so answer completely (IFSO). From 15 November 2027 (not yet in force), the Contracts of Insurance Act 2024 is due to replace the current disclosure duty with a duty to take reasonable care (FMA).
Working with a licensed adviser
An adviser can quote Chubb Life alongside other insurers and handle the application. The FMA says most insurance advisers receive commission from the insurer, built into the premium, and that you should ask how much (FMA: Insurance advice). Advice on this site is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931).
When no-health-questions cover is the alternative
Fully underwritten cover suits most healthy people. If you would be declined or heavily loaded, or want cover in place without questions, guaranteed acceptance is the alternative; see guaranteed acceptance versus full medical. Momentum Life Limited's Quick Life accepts ages 18 to 65, $50,000 to $300,000, with no health questions; for the first 2 years pre-existing conditions and suicide are excluded, and premiums rise each year until 75. Momentum's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair); read its financial strength page. Funeral needs are a separate product: Chubb's own Funeral Cover is guaranteed for ages 50 to 80, and Momentum's Funeral Insurance accepts 40 to 75 but pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months. Premiums can total more than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. See our funeral insurance hub and Quick Life. The buttons on this page lead to Momentum's own application. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner, and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission on Momentum products; see how we are paid.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Chubb Life quote online?
Yes for Life & Living, through the "Get a Quote" tool on Chubb's site. Assurance Extra is built with an adviser.
Does Chubb publish its prices?
Not as a rate table on the pages we read. The premium comes from your answers.
Does smoking change a Chubb quote?
Chubb lists smoking as a premium factor. Its guide requires 12 months free of tobacco and nicotine for non-smoker rates.
Is the first quote the final price?
Not necessarily. Application assessment can ask for more information, and Chubb's guide says a BMI loading may apply.
