Options for $10,000 of life or funeral cover in NZ

In New Zealand, $10,000 of cover is usually funeral cover, because most life insurance starts at larger amounts. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance offers $3,000 to $30,000 for ages 40 to 75 and acceptance is guaranteed, but for the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death. Total premiums can pass $10,000, and a funeral can cost more than $10,000.

In short

What does a $10,000 policy pay in NZ?

A $10,000 funeral or life benefit is a lump sum that the insurer pays to the policy owner, the nominated beneficiary or the executor after a valid claim. For Momentum's Funeral Insurance, the payout goes to the owner first, then the nominated beneficiary, then the executor (Momentum: FAQs). The beneficiary must be a person, so a funeral director cannot be named: Momentum "can't pay a Benefit directly to a company, charity or other organisation" (Funeral Insurance Policy Wording). Momentum says claims are usually paid within 24 to 48 hours of approval, and approval is the start of that clock, not the death. A benefit of $10,000 sits inside Momentum's range of $3,000 to $30,000, with $30,000 the most any one life can hold across all Momentum funeral policies. Accidental death pays three times the benefit, so $30,000 on a $10,000 policy, where death happens within 90 days of the accident.

Can $10,000 cover an average funeral in NZ?

Sometimes, but not reliably. FDANZ, the funeral directors' association, asked member homes to price set scenarios in its 2026 report (FDANZ, 2026 New Zealand Funeral Industry Trends Report). The table compares each with $10,000.

Scenario (FDANZ, 2025 survey) Average Range $10,000 benefit leaves
Unattended cremation, no service $4,700 Not published $5,300 over
Full funeral, cremation, 50 guests $11,700 $10,000 to $13,900 $1,700 short
Full funeral, burial, 50 guests $14,300 $12,800 to $17,000 $4,300 short

The last column is our arithmetic. Council burial fees, flowers, notices and catering vary by town, and FDANZ's scenarios assume a mid-price casket and a weekday transfer. Our funeral cost guide breaks the costs down, and the funeral cost calculator lets you test your own plan.

Two points. First, a $10,000 life policy with health questions is a different thing from guaranteed-acceptance funeral cover: it can be declined or loaded, and nobody can promise acceptance. Second, under 40 there is no Momentum funeral option at all, and Momentum's Quick Life, which accepts ages 18 to 65, has a $50,000 minimum.

What Momentum's Funeral Insurance does with a $10,000 benefit

This is not a savings or investment plan. Depending on how long you keep the cover, the total premiums you pay could exceed the benefit paid, and the benefit may not cover the cost of a funeral. Setting money aside in a savings account is the other way to prepare (Consumer NZ: 5 ways to pay for your funeral).

Level premiums to 89: will you pay more than $10,000?

Momentum publishes no funeral premium, and QuoteHub's Premium Index has no funeral rows, so we cannot print a typical price. What we can do is turn the question around. Because premiums run to the 89th birthday and then stop, the number of years you pay is fixed by your age at issue. The table shows the monthly amount that, paid until the 89th birthday, would total $10,000. It is plain division, not a Momentum price.

Age at issue Years of premiums to 89th birthday Monthly amount that totals $10,000 by 89 Same, per year
45 44 $18.94 $227.27
55 34 $24.51 $294.12
65 24 $34.72 $416.67

How to use it: take a monthly quote for a $10,000 benefit and compare it with the row for your age. If the quote is higher, you would pay more than $10,000 in total by the 89th birthday, provided the rate never changed and you lived that long. If it is lower, you would pay less than the benefit by then. Dying earlier means fewer premiums paid. The wording says the rate can change, so treat the result as a guide. The funeral insurance break-even calculator does the same sum with your own figure.

One insurer does publish a price. AA Life shows "from $14.28 a week for $10,000" for a 66-year-old female AA Member who is a non-smoker (AA Life, read 20 October 2026). That is $742.56 a year on 52 weeks, our arithmetic, so at an unchanged rate the premiums would reach $10,000 after about 13.5 years. It is one profile and not a Momentum price. Independent sites show funeral insurance prices roughly doubling between ages 50 and 70 (Moneyhub).

IFSO, the insurance ombudsman, published a case about a 2010 $20,000 funeral policy with premiums to age 90 and no warning that they could exceed the sum. The insurer refunded all premiums, and the case note says "It is not a savings product" (IFSO).

How to apply for $10,000 of guaranteed-acceptance funeral cover

  1. Check the age rule (40 to 75 for Momentum) and the residency test above.
  2. Decide the amount. Test it against FDANZ's figures and the break-even table.
  3. Read the Funeral Insurance wording, especially the 24-month window.
  4. Name a person as beneficiary, not a funeral director, and tell your family the policy exists.
  5. Use the 30-day free look if you change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

Is $10,000 enough for a funeral in NZ?

It can cover a simple cremation, but FDANZ's average for a full funeral with 50 guests is $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial. The benefit may not cover the cost of a funeral, so plan for the gap.

Can I get $10,000 of life insurance with no health questions?

Funeral Insurance has no health questions, from age 40 with Momentum, and from other ages with other insurers. Quick Life also has no health questions but starts at $50,000, and excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years.

What happens if I die in the first 24 months?

With Momentum's Funeral Insurance, the $10,000 is paid only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident. Any other death pays nothing and all premiums for that person are refunded.

Is $10,000 funeral insurance worth it?

It depends on your savings, your health and how long you keep it. The break-even table shows when premiums would pass the benefit. Savings or a prepaid plan are the other routes.
