$200,000 life insurance cost in NZ: what to expect

QuoteHub has not priced $200,000 of life cover, so this page gives no figure for it. Our Premium Index, a snapshot of insurers' published rate cards as at 8 September 2026, prices $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000. For the same person, $200,000 should cost less than $250,000, though not necessarily in proportion to the cover. Momentum Life's Quick Life takes $200,000 for ages 18 to 65 with no health questions, and excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years.

In short

What the Premium Index has and has not priced

The Premium Index is QuoteHub's own table of indicative monthly premiums from insurers' published rate cards. It covers AIA, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, Momentum Life and Partners Life, for ages 25 to 65 in five-year steps (methodology). It was built on three life cover amounts only.

Cover amount On the Index? Insurers pricing it
$50,000 No n/a
$200,000 No n/a
$250,000 Yes Six, including Momentum's Quick Life
$300,000 No n/a
$500,000 Yes Five (Momentum's Quick Life tops out at $300,000 per person at the start)
$1,000,000 Yes Five

The one insurer-published $200,000 figure we found is Booster's: an indicative price of about $20 a month for a 30-year-old non-smoker, on a product open only to Booster KiwiSaver members aged 18 to 50 in good health (Booster, retrieved 20 October 2026). It is one age and profile, so it is a data point, not a market price.

We could have scaled the $250,000 rows down by a fifth and called the result a $200,000 price. We did not, because that would invent a figure no insurer has published. If you want a number for $200,000 itself, an adviser can run the rating software at your age, smoking status and occupation.

The nearest priced amount: $250,000

For the same age, smoking status and insurer, less cover costs less. These are the $250,000 ranges for a non-smoker, so $200,000 would be expected to sit lower for the same person:

Age Man, non-smoker Woman, non-smoker
40 $25 to $70 $20 to $60
50 $50 to $110 $45 to $100
60 $170 to $325 $130 to $250

Each cell is one rounded range across the insurers that priced it, from the Premium Index as at 8 September 2026, stepped premiums, occupation class 1, standard rates with no loadings or exclusions. It is not a quote. The ranges are wide because the panel at $250,000 includes a guaranteed-acceptance product, Quick Life, alongside underwritten cover. See the full table by age on our $250,000 cost page, and the published rate cards at Fidelity Life and AIA.

Why $200,000 is not simply 80 percent of $250,000

On the Index, the lowest quote per $100,000 of cover falls as the sum insured rises. Between $250,000 and $500,000 the fall is about 12 to 23 percent for ages 40 to 60, on QuoteHub's own arithmetic. That is the pattern across the three amounts we did price. We have not tested it at $200,000, but it is a reason not to assume a straight line, and it means a smaller sum insured saves less than the headline amount suggests. Our page on cost by cover amount shows the same pattern for $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000.

Is $200,000 the right size?

Price matters less than fit. Work through these in order and add the lines up.

  1. Debts that would fall on someone else. Mortgage balance, car loans, credit cards. For scale, the average new mortgage in New Zealand was $377,569 in June 2026, on Reserve Bank data reported by NZ Adviser. A $200,000 policy covers about half of that on its own.
  2. Income someone relies on. How many years of your income would a partner or child need to adjust? Life cover is a lump sum, not a monthly income, and it is a different product from income protection.
  3. Funeral costs. FDANZ's 2026 report gives an average of $11,700 for a full funeral for 50 guests with cremation, and $14,300 with burial (FDANZ).
  4. Minus what is already there. Savings, cover through work, and any existing policy.

If the total is around $200,000, the amount fits. If it is well above, a bigger amount is worth pricing. Use the life insurance calculator or read how much life insurance you need.

Quick Life at $200,000: the rules

Quick Life is Momentum Life's guaranteed-acceptance life cover, issued by Momentum Life Limited.

Acceptance is guaranteed because no health questions are asked. A healthy person can usually get more cover for less with fully underwritten cover through an adviser. Chubb Life's published underwriting guide asks for only a personal statement up to $500,000 at every age band, and Fidelity Life's guide only an application form, though a disclosed condition can trigger more (Chubb underwriting guide; Fidelity underwriting guide).

What to weigh before you decide

Momentum Life Limited has an A.M. Best financial strength rating of B (Fair), affirmed on 11 February 2026, a range A.M. Best calls vulnerable. See Momentum's financial strength page. The rating is not a recommendation either way.

Stepped premiums rise every year with age. The FMA says a policy that is cheaper at first can cost more over time (FMA: Insurance). Read stepped versus level premiums before choosing a structure, and see no medical exam life insurance for how the no-exam options differ. For a bigger sum, our $300,000 cost page explains how Quick Life's starting maximum and 3 percent indexation work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does $200,000 life insurance cost per month in NZ?

QuoteHub has no priced figure for $200,000. At $250,000, the nearest amount on the Index, a non-smoking 40-year-old sees a monthly cost of about $20 to $70 on the Index, depending on sex and insurer. The cost at $200,000 for the same person should be lower, but your own premium depends on underwriting.

Can I get $200,000 of life cover without a medical?

Quick Life offers $50,000 to $300,000 to people aged 18 to 65 with no health questions or medical exam. Pre-existing conditions and suicide are excluded for the first 2 years.

Is $200,000 enough life insurance?

It depends on your debts, dependants and savings. Against an average new mortgage of $377,569, it covers about half on its own. The sizing steps above show how to test it.
