$500,000 life insurance cost in NZ: monthly ranges by age
For $500,000 of stepped life cover, a non-smoking New Zealander aged 40 sees a monthly cost of roughly $40 to $50 for a man and $35 to $40 for a woman, rising to $625 to $725 and $400 to $475 at 65. These are rounded ranges across five insurers from QuoteHub's Premium Index, as at 8 September 2026, at standard rates. Momentum's Quick Life starts no higher than $300,000, so $500,000 at the outset comes through underwritten cover. Your own premium depends on underwriting.
In short
- Age is the biggest driver. For a non-smoking man, the lowest quote at 65 is about eighteen times the lowest at 30, on QuoteHub's arithmetic from the Index.
- Smokers pay roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the lowest non-smoker quote, depending on age and sex.
- Quick Life's starting maximum is $300,000 per person. It can reach $500,000 only through 3 percent yearly increases, so it is not a way to buy $500,000 on day one.
- Fidelity Life and Chubb Life publish that an application form or personal statement alone is needed up to $500,000, but anything you disclose can trigger more.

Source: the QuoteHub Premium Index, indicative monthly cost from insurers' published rate cards as at 8 September 2026 (methodology), with rate cards at AIA and Fidelity Life. Rounded outward to the nearest $5 under $50, $10 up to $200 and $25 above. It is not a quote.
Two patterns stand out. Cost dips between 25 and about 30 and then climbs: it more than doubles between 40 and 50 for a man and is about ten times higher at 65 than at 45, on the lowest quotes. And the smoker premium is far above the non-smoker one from the late thirties on. QuoteHub's smoker pricing page shows the gap at every age, and staying nicotine-free for 12 months before applying can matter; see smoker versus non-smoker life insurance.
Why $500,000 needs an underwritten application
Quick Life, Momentum Life's guaranteed-acceptance cover, accepts $50,000 to $300,000 per life insured. The wording sets $300,000 as the most it will pay for one person plus automatic increases, up to a total cap of $500,000. A new customer cannot start at $500,000. At 3 percent a year it takes about 18 anniversaries to get from $300,000 to the cap on our arithmetic, and increases stop at 75, so many people never reach it. See the $300,000 cost page for the worked table.
That leaves underwritten cover for an immediate $500,000. Underwritten means the insurer assesses your health, lifestyle and finances and then sets terms: standard, loaded, excluded, postponed or declined. It is easy to assume $500,000 means a full medical. The published guides say otherwise for the standard route:
| Insurer | Evidence needed up to $500,000 | Above $500,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Chubb Life | A personal statement, at every age band | Code A medical evidence from $500,001 at ages 61 and over |
| Fidelity Life | An application form, at every age band | Code A (GP medical or paramedical, blood tests) from $500,001 at 61 and over |
Sources: Chubb underwriting guide, May 2025 and Fidelity underwriting guide, October 2025. These are minimums. A disclosed condition triggers more, and a BMI of 37 or above triggers extra tests at both. Fidelity's guide is marked for adviser use, so treat it as a description of process, not a promise. Terms are the insurer's decision.
What drives the price at $500,000
- Premium structure. The Index prices stepped premiums, which are reset each year for age. Fidelity says level term starts "a bit higher" and then stays the same for the term; Asteron says level premiums "lock your premium payments in" (Fidelity; Asteron). We have no level prices. See stepped versus level premiums.
- Sex. A man's lowest quote is about 14 to 65 percent above a woman's depending on age, widest at 25 and again at 65.
- Size. On the Index, the lowest quote per $100,000 at $500,000 is roughly 12 to 23 percent below the $250,000 figure at ages 40 to 60, so doubling the cover does not double the price. The cover amount comparison sets out $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 together.
- Health and job. Loadings and exclusions do not appear in the Index. Only occupation class 1 was priced.
Is $500,000 the right amount?
Add up debts, the income your household would need to replace, children's costs and a funeral, then subtract what you already have. The average new mortgage in New Zealand was $377,569 in June 2026, on Reserve Bank data reported by NZ Adviser, so $500,000 covers an average loan with about $120,000 left over before income needs. For a family with young children, the life insurance calculator and our guide to how much cover you need are the better starting points. At the next step up, see the $1 million cost page.
How to apply for $500,000
- Get quotes from more than one insurer through a licensed adviser, who can ask about stepped and level terms. See how to compare insurance quotes.
- Answer every question fully. If you are replacing a policy, the FMA says to keep the old one running until the new cover is in force (FMA).
- If you want cover in place without health questions, Quick Life is available at up to $300,000 for ages 18 to 65. Its first 2 years exclude pre-existing conditions and suicide, and it is not available to people diagnosed with a terminal illness. See the Quick Life plan page and the guaranteed acceptance hub.
Momentum Life Limited has an A.M. Best financial strength rating of B (Fair), affirmed on 11 February 2026, a range A.M. Best calls vulnerable (Momentum: financial strength).
Compared: five named insurers on the Premium Index, on cost by age, sex and smoking status for $500,000, as at 8 September 2026. Momentum is not in this panel because Quick Life is not priced at $500,000. Not every NZ insurer is included. This is one adviser team's reading, not a score.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a $500,000 life insurance policy cost per month in NZ?
A non-smoker aged 40 sees about $40 to $50 for a man and $35 to $40 for a woman on QuoteHub's Premium Index. At 60 the ranges are $300 to $375 and $225 to $275. These are rounded ranges, not quotes.
Can I get $500,000 of cover without a medical exam?
Quick Life offers no health questions, but starts at no more than $300,000 per person. Chubb Life's and Fidelity Life's published guides set the minimum evidence up to $500,000 at a personal statement or an application form, but a disclosed condition or a BMI of 37 or above can lead to a medical or tests, and terms are the insurer's decision.
Why is $500,000 less than twice the price of $250,000?
On the Index the cost per $100,000 is lower at $500,000, and the $250,000 panel also includes a guaranteed-acceptance product.
