$50,000 life insurance cost in NZ: which products reach it

QuoteHub's Premium Index does not price $50,000 of life cover, so there is no QuoteHub range here. The one insurer-published figure we could source is Booster's indicative price of about $5 a month for $50,000, for a 30-year-old non-smoker, on a Booster product open only to members aged 18 to 50. Momentum's Quick Life starts at $50,000 for ages 18 to 65 with no health questions, while Momentum's Funeral Insurance stops at $30,000. Your own premium depends on age, smoking and underwriting.

What $50,000 costs

We found one insurer-published price. Booster's page gives indicative monthly figures of about $5 for $50,000, $10 for $100,000 and $20 for $200,000, for a 30-year-old non-smoker, and the product is for Booster KiwiSaver members aged 18 to 50 (Booster, retrieved 20 October 2026). It is a single age and profile from one insurer, so read it as a data point, not a market price.

Momentum publishes no Quick Life premium. For a sense of how cost behaves across the amounts we did price, QuoteHub's Premium Index shows the lowest quote per $100,000 falling as the sum insured rises. That suggests a $50,000 policy costs more per dollar of cover than a $250,000 one, but we have not tested it at $50,000. The nearest priced amount is on the $250,000 cost page, and the cost by cover amount comparison shows the pattern. Stepped premiums also rise every year with age, as the FMA notes (FMA: Insurance).

$50,000 life cover versus funeral insurance

People searching for a small amount are often thinking about final costs. The two products work differently.

Funeral insurance (Momentum) Life cover such as Quick Life
Amount $3,000 to $30,000 $50,000 to $300,000
Premiums Level until the 89th birthday, then stop; cover continues for life Stepped each year to 75, then fixed
First window 24 months: accidental death only, within 90 days; other deaths refund all premiums 2 years: pre-existing conditions and suicide excluded
Terminal illness No benefit Pays if death is expected within 12 months
Ages 40 to 75 18 to 65

For scale, FDANZ's 2026 report gives an average of $11,700 for a full funeral for 50 guests with cremation and $14,300 with burial (FDANZ). So $50,000 is well above funeral costs and is more likely meant for a debt, a gap in savings or a top-up. The Work and Income Funeral Grant has a maximum of $2,697.43 (page updated 24 June 2026), is tested on income and assets, and prepaid funeral cover can affect eligibility (Work and Income).

Funeral insurance is not a savings or investment plan. Depending on how long you keep your cover, the total premiums you pay could exceed the benefit paid, and the benefit may not cover the cost of a funeral. Setting money aside in a savings account is the other way to prepare, and for a small sum it can be the simpler one.

Quick Life at $50,000

Quick Life is Momentum Life's guaranteed-acceptance life cover, issued by Momentum Life Limited. At the minimum amount the rules are the same as at any other. Acceptance is guaranteed: no health questions and no medical exam. In the first 2 years, pre-existing conditions (including symptoms noticed but not diagnosed, a BMI over 40, cholesterol over 7.0 and very high blood pressure) and suicide are excluded. If death is from a pre-existing condition in the first 24 months and no claim is payable, premiums are refunded. The policy pays on accidental death, on death from any cause after the first 2 years, and on terminal illness (expected to lead to death within 12 months). Deaths from alcohol or drug effects, war, terrorism, crime and listed dangerous jobs or pastimes are always excluded.

The benefit rises 3 percent a year until 75, and the premium rises with it. At 75, $20,000 of the benefit becomes free: the owner can elect a free $20,000 funeral benefit or continue Quick Life with the free component. The wording does not spell out how the premium is treated after that. You have 30 days from the policy start to cancel for a full refund if no claim has been made. See the Quick Life plan page and the guaranteed acceptance hub.

Momentum Life Limited has an A.M. Best financial strength rating of B (Fair), affirmed on 11 February 2026, a range A.M. Best calls vulnerable (Momentum: financial strength).

When an adviser can help

A healthy person can usually get more cover for less with fully underwritten cover through an adviser, and a licensed adviser can also say whether a larger amount is worth pricing. Frequently asked questions

Is $50,000 the minimum Quick Life cover?

Yes. Quick Life cover runs from $50,000 to $300,000 per person.

Can funeral insurance pay $50,000?

Not as a single benefit from Momentum, whose maximum is $30,000 per life insured across all its funeral policies. Accidental death pays three times the benefit, up to $90,000, but only where death occurs within 90 days of an accident.

Is $50,000 life cover worth it?

That depends on what it is for. If nobody relies on your income and the estate can pay your debts, savings may do the job. The life insurance just for funeral costs guide sets out the trade-offs.
