Tower says it generally insures electric vehicles under its ordinary car policies, subject to its underwriting criteria (Tower's EV page). Its car insurance page says the policies cover EVs, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hybrids.

The differences are in the detail: how the battery is treated, whether the charging cable is included, and which policy covers a charger on your wall. This guide, part of QuoteHub's car insurance section, uses Tower's published pages and wording as the worked example. Other insurers set their own terms, so check the wording of any policy you are offered.

Do you need a special policy for an EV?

No. Tower's EV insurance page says you do not need any special insurance. The usual three levels of car cover apply: comprehensive, third party, fire and theft, and third party. Cover for a particular car is subject to Tower's underwriting criteria.

Those levels are explained in our guides to comprehensive car insurance and third party car insurance. The trade-off between them is in comprehensive vs third party.

Tower's EV page names Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BYD and Volkswagen as examples of brands it insures, and describes the list as various popular electric vehicles. It does not say every make and model is accepted. For a particular car, including a Tesla, the quote tool shows whether Tower will insure it and on what terms.

Whether any car insurance is required is covered in our guide to whether car insurance is compulsory.

What counts as an EV, a PHEV or a hybrid

A BEV (battery electric vehicle) runs only on batteries. A PHEV uses batteries and an engine together and can be plugged in. A hybrid also uses both, but you still fill it with petrol or diesel (Tower's EV page).

Tower's car insurance page lists all three under one heading about cover for an EV, PHEV or hybrid. Neither page says the cover differs between them. A quote shows the terms for your car.

What Tower says about batteries and charging cables

Tower's comprehensive cover includes the battery, and the standard charging pack and cables sold with the car when new, if damaged in a sudden and accidental event, fire or theft (Tower's EV page). Third party, fire and theft gives limited cover. Battery failure and wear and tear are not covered.

Source for every row: Tower's EV insurance page. The binding terms are in Tower's policy wording, which excludes mechanical failure unless it results from a loss Tower has accepted, as well as wear, tear and depreciation.

A battery cracked in a crash, burnt in a fire or taken in a theft is a claim. A battery that has lost range over the years, or stops working with no outside cause, is not. Tower's page notes that electric car batteries have a certain lifespan and can be expensive to replace. A warranty from the car's maker is separate and is not insurance.

Two limits are worth knowing. The cable cover applies only to the standard pack and cables sold with the car when new, and the page does not mention a cable bought later, so ask about it. "Limited cover" under third party, fire and theft is Tower's phrase and the page does not say what the limit is, so check the wording or ask before you choose that level.

The charger on your wall

A charging station installed in your home falls under your house policy, according to Tower's EV page. The car policy deals with the car, battery and standard cable. The house policy deals with the fixed charger.

If you rent or share a building, the page does not say who is responsible for a charger, so ask the owner and the insurer. Our section on house insurance explains how house cover is set up.

Buying a new EV: cover before you collect it

Tower's comprehensive wording covers a car you buy to replace or add to your insured car for 14 days from purchase, but only if you paid $125,000 or less. It pays the least of what you paid, its market value and $125,000 (Tower's comprehensive wording).

For a car above that price, the wording says to call Tower to arrange insurance before buying.

Tower's car page also says that if you insure a new car with it from new on comprehensive cover, it will replace the car with a new one if it becomes a total loss within the first two years, subject to availability. The wording adds that you must have owned the car from new (Tower's car insurance page, comprehensive wording). How a total loss is paid otherwise is in our guide to agreed value and market value.

What sets the price

Tower says it uses a risk-based pricing model that takes into account things like the type of car you drive, its value and where you live (Tower's EV page). This page makes no claim that EVs cost more or less to insure than other cars.

Our guide to what sets the price of car insurance goes through the other factors. No one can tell you a price before the insurer has your details.

Roadside help and claims

Tower's EV page says it can help with a flat tyre or flat battery if you have added RoadWise roadside assistance to your policy (Tower's EV page). RoadWise covers the car rather than the person, with three free call-outs a year (Tower's car insurance page).

The page does not say whether a car that has run out of charge is attended, so read the RoadWise terms before assuming so. Our page on Tower roadside assistance goes through it.

Claim steps are the same as for any car, set out in our guide to car insurance claims. If you have added aftermarket parts, modified car insurance explains why they need to be declared.

Questions people ask

Is electric car insurance different from normal car insurance?

Not in Tower's case. It generally insures electric vehicles under its standard car policies, so you do not need special insurance (Tower's EV page). The differences are in how the battery, cable and home charger are treated.

Is the battery covered?

Under Tower's comprehensive policy, yes, if it is damaged in a sudden and accidental event, fire or theft. Third party, fire and theft gives limited cover. Battery failure and wear and tear are not covered (Tower's EV page).

Does insurance cover the charging cable?

Tower's comprehensive cover includes the standard charging pack and cables sold with the car when new, if damaged in a sudden and accidental event, fire or theft. A fixed home charger falls under your house policy (Tower's EV page).

Do hybrids and plug-in hybrids need different cover?

Tower lists EVs, PHEVs and hybrids together on its car insurance page and says its car policies cover all of them. A quote shows the terms for your car.

Can I get insurance for a Tesla?

Tower's EV page names Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BYD and Volkswagen as examples and does not list every make (Tower's EV page). Cover is subject to Tower's current underwriting criteria, so a quote shows whether a specific Tesla is accepted. Other insurers set their own rules.

Is EV insurance more expensive?

We have no source that says so, and no one can say for your car without a quote. See our guide to car insurance cost.
