New Zealanders in their sixties have two no-health-question paths, split by age. Until 65, Momentum Life's Quick Life covers $50,000 to $300,000. From 66, Quick Life is closed to new applicants and Funeral Insurance, $3,000 to $30,000 for ages 40 to 75, is the one no-health-question Momentum product that remains. Their first two years work differently, which matters more at this age.
The age 65 line, at 64 and at 66
Here is what Momentum offers at either side of the line, from its two policy wordings.
| Aged 64 | Aged 66 | |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Life ($50,000 to $300,000) | Open | Closed to new applicants |
| Funeral Insurance ($3,000 to $30,000) | Open | Open |
| Largest starting amount without health questions | $300,000 | $30,000 |
| Terminal illness benefit | Quick Life: yes, if death is expected within 12 months | None on Funeral Insurance |
| Premium shape | Quick Life stepped to 75, then fixed. Funeral level to 89 | Funeral level to 89 |
| Premium years to the 89th birthday (Funeral) | About 25 | About 23 |
Quick Life's wording sets the entry band at 18 to 65 and says a policy is void, with premiums refunded, if the person's true age at the start was over 65. It does not say how it counts someone between 65 and 66, so if you are near the line ask Momentum before you apply. Sources: Quick Life Policy Wording, November 2025 and Funeral Insurance Policy Wording. If you already hold Quick Life, it carries on past 65.
What each product pays in its first two years
A 2-year period and a 24-month period are the same length, but they cover different things. This is the part people mix up.
| If the person dies in month 6 | Quick Life | Funeral Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| In an accident | Covered | Covered, and pays 3 times the benefit (death within 90 days of the accident) |
| Of an illness that first started after cover began | Covered | Not covered: no benefit, all premiums refunded |
| Of a pre-existing condition | Not covered; premiums refunded if no claim is payable | Not covered: no benefit, all premiums refunded |
| By suicide | Not covered for the first 2 years | Not an accident, so no benefit and premiums refunded |
| After month 30, of any cause | Covered, except any condition permanently excluded in the schedule | Covered, from any cause |
Quick Life defines a pre-existing condition as any illness, condition or symptoms in the 2 years before the start, including treatment or advice and symptoms not yet diagnosed, and it names a BMI over 40, cholesterol over 7.0, very high blood pressure and complications of diabetes. In your sixties, with more chance of a recent diagnosis, that definition does the work. Quick Life is also not available, according to Momentum's site, to anyone diagnosed with a terminal illness or in palliative or hospice care. Always excluded: deaths from alcohol or drug effects, war, terrorism, crime, and dangerous jobs and pastimes the wording lists. Read about the two-year exclusion.
Choosing between $300,000 and $30,000
The amounts serve different needs. $300,000 stands in for an income or clears debt for a partner who relies on you. $30,000 is the top Funeral Insurance amount, and it is set against funeral costs that FDANZ's 2026 report puts at $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial for 50 guests (FDANZ); a smaller benefit may be enough. Quick Life's benefit rises 3% a year until 75 or $500,000 per person, and the premium rises with it; you can opt out of any increase. Couples can apply jointly, with a $50 a year partner discount, and each person is covered separately, so cover is not first-death-only. Funeral Insurance takes up to four people on one policy at $150 a year off each extra person.
Paying for it in your sixties
Stepped premiums climb every year until 75, so the figure you pay at 64 is not the one you pay at 70. Funeral premiums are level, but you pay until the 89th birthday, and for either product total premiums can exceed the benefit. This is not a savings or investment plan. The benefit may not cover the cost of a funeral. QuoteHub's rate pages show how stepped cost behaves with age, and the cost guide explains the sums. When cover with health questions is worth pricing
A healthy person can usually get more cover for less through a licensed adviser, and acceptance is the insurer's decision, so nobody can promise it. Chubb and Fidelity publish that for life cover up to $500,000 they need only an application form at every age band, with extra evidence from $500,001 at 61 and over (Chubb guide, Fidelity guide). If you have a health condition, one insurer's published guidance says an older diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (its example is 60), well controlled and without complications, may attract a loading of 50 to 75% (Chubb). That is one insurer's guidance on one condition, not a rule. If you have been declined, read life insurance after a decline. Our life insurance over 60 article covers the wider market, and guaranteed acceptance over 50 covers the decade before.

Adviser's view
Your sixties split in two. Up to 65 you can get up to $300,000 of Quick Life; from 66 only Funeral Insurance, up to $30,000, remains. The first two years work differently in each, so match the product to the risk you are worried about, and price cover that asks health questions before you give it up.
