No-medical life insurance options after 75
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
Momentum Life's two no-health-question products do not accept new applicants over 75: Funeral Insurance stops at 75 and Quick Life at 65. Other insurers still publish small funeral policies to 79 or 80, with an early accident-only window. After 75 the more useful question is often how to fund a funeral, not which policy to buy.
Guaranteed acceptance cover for people over 75 means funeral insurance in practice. Funeral insurance is a small fixed-benefit policy, usually $3,000 to $30,000, bought without health questions and intended to put money towards funeral costs. Of the products we checked, NZ Seniors and OneChoice take ages 18 to 79, AA Life takes 50 to 79 and Chubb Life takes 50 to 80, and all of them pay only for accidental death in the first 12 or 24 months. No guaranteed-acceptance life policy for a larger sum was found at these ages. Because insurers can stop selling or change entry ages, treat every limit here as correct at 20 October 2026 and check the insurer's own page. This page does not offer a Momentum application, because none of Momentum's products is open over 75.
What is still published after 75
| Product | Entry ages | Early window | Questions asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| NZ Seniors and OneChoice funeral cover (Pinnacle Life) | 18 to 79 | 12 months, accident only | None |
| AA Life Funeral Cover (Asteron Life) | 50 to 79 | 24 months; other deaths refund premiums | None |
| Chubb Life Funeral Cover | 50 to 80 | 24 months; premiums refunded | None |
| NZ Seniors Life | 45 to 79 | None stated | Eight health questions by phone |
| Golden Insurance | 40 to 80 | A waiting period may apply | Health and lifestyle questions |
Details are from each insurer's own pages, read on 17 to 20 October 2026. The side-by-side detail for funeral products is in the funeral insurance comparison, and the age bands are explained on funeral insurance over 80. To test a specific age and product, use the guaranteed acceptance eligibility checker. Cover with health questions is the insurer's decision on your health; nobody can promise acceptance.
Why Momentum stops at 75
Momentum's Funeral Insurance wording sets entry ages at 40 to 75, and its Quick Life wording sets them at 18 to 65. If you already hold a Momentum policy it carries on under its own terms: Funeral Insurance premiums are fixed each year until the 89th birthday and then stop, and at 75 a Quick Life policyholder can elect a free $20,000 funeral benefit or continue with the free component. For the company's financial strength, Momentum's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), explained on its financial strength page.
Insurance, prepaid plan, savings or grant
These routes do different jobs, and they can be combined.
| Route | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Funeral insurance from another insurer | A fixed benefit paid on death, after an early accident-only window | Total premiums can exceed the benefit; the benefit may not cover the funeral |
| Prepaid funeral trust | Money paid in advance for a funeral, held in a trust | Public Trust says its fund is under a government guarantee, which is Public Trust's statement; Consumer NZ says money in a trust may not be withdrawable unless in significant hardship; no interest is paid by Now For Them |
| Money set aside in your own name | A bank balance or term deposit kept for the purpose | Counts as an asset for the Funeral Grant and for residential care tests; the bank can release money from a deceased person's account for the funeral |
| Work and Income Funeral Grant | Up to $2,697.43, asset tested, with an income test where the person who died was a partner or child | A prepaid funeral account counts as an asset, and prepaid funeral cover can stop you getting it |
Now For Them is run for the funeral directors' association FDANZ by The Funeral Trust Services Limited; it says it is "not a savings or investment product" and charges no fees at the moment, with a promise to say if that changes. Public Trust's prepaid trust has one set-up fee and one end fee, and the page shows no amounts (FDANZ, Public Trust, Consumer NZ). We could not find a source that says what protects your money if a prepaid provider fails; ask any provider in writing. Our guides on prepaid funerals and the Funeral Grant go further.
For people who may need residential care, the Work and Income Residential Care Subsidy does not count prepaid funeral expenses of up to $10,000 each in a recognised funeral plan towards the asset test. Work and Income lists cash or savings among assets and does not extend the exemption to money set aside outside a recognised plan.
A worked example, with round numbers
This is arithmetic with an invented round figure, not any insurer's price or a quote. Suppose a funeral policy cost $20 a week from age 77, with premiums stopping at 85, and paid a $10,000 benefit. Eight years of premiums is 8 x 52 x $20, or $8,320. Someone who died in the third year would have paid $3,120. Someone who lived to 90 would have paid the same $8,320 as someone who died at 85, because cover continues after premiums stop. Over a long life the premiums can come close to the benefit, and with a higher premium they can pass it. The early window matters too: in the first 12 or 24 months an illness death pays no benefit, and some products refund premiums for it while others do not. Put your own premium and age into the break-even calculator before deciding.
Set that against costs. FDANZ's 2026 report puts a full funeral with 50 guests at an average $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial, and an unattended cremation at $4,700. The Funeral Grant maximum of $2,697.43 is about 23% of the cremation average. A policy, a trust or savings only has to cover whatever you choose to leave unmet.
What a licensed adviser can and cannot do
An adviser can ask insurers about cover with health questions, explain the early window and the premium pattern, and compare it with a prepaid trust or savings on your numbers. They cannot make an insurer accept you or guarantee a price. Under the FMA's rules for advice, an adviser must explain what the advice covers and does not cover. If you have family who would arrange the funeral, tell them where the papers are; the life insurance over 75 blog has a checklist for the estate side.

Adviser's view
After 75 the question is less 'which policy' than 'which way of paying'. A few insurers still sell small funeral policies to 79 or 80, but they start with an accident-only window and the premiums can add up to more than the benefit. A prepaid trust, money set aside in your own name or the Funeral Grant may suit better. A licensed adviser can weigh these against your circumstances.
