No-health-question cover after age 65

After 65, new entry to Momentum Life's Quick Life, the no-health-question life cover for ages 18 to 65, is closed. What remains for ages 66 to 75 is Momentum's Funeral Insurance: acceptance guaranteed with no health questions, $3,000 to $30,000, and in the first 24 months only accidental death is paid. This page is about that product. It cannot replace a large life policy.
What is open, and what is not
| Product | Entry ages | Open to a new applicant aged 66 to 75? |
|---|---|---|
| Momentum Quick Life | 18 to 65 | No |
| Momentum Funeral Insurance | 40 to 75 | Yes |
| Either product over 75 | n/a | No |
Quick Life's wording voids a policy, with all premiums refunded, if the person's true age at the start was over 65. If you already hold Quick Life, it continues, and at 75 $20,000 of the benefit becomes free. Funeral Insurance's $30,000 limit applies per person across all Momentum funeral policies, and accidental death pays three times the benefit. The first 24 months
This is the rule that decides whether the product works for you.
- Accident: if the death is a direct result of an accident and occurs within 90 days of it, the benefit is paid at three times the amount, from day one.
- Any other cause in the first 24 months: no benefit is paid, and all premiums paid for that person are refunded.
- After 24 months: the benefit is paid for death from any cause.
- No pre-existing condition clause, and no separate suicide clause. The 24-month window is the only early restriction. Increasing the cover starts a new 24-month window for the increase.
- No terminal illness benefit.
So a person with a serious illness today is exposed. If they die of it inside the 24 months, the premiums are refunded and no benefit is paid. That is how the product is designed. Our waiting periods page covers it in full.
How many years you would pay
Funeral Insurance premiums are fixed each year until the 89th birthday, then stop, and the cover continues for life. Payments can be fortnightly, monthly or annually; card payments carry a processing fee. The later you start, the fewer years you pay.
| Age at entry | Years of premiums to the 89th birthday |
|---|---|
| 66 | 23 |
| 70 | 19 |
| 75 | 14 |
QuoteHub shows no exact Momentum premium. The break-even method works with any figure. Take the benefit and divide by one year of premiums; that is how many years of paying it takes for total premiums to equal the benefit. As a made-up example, not a Momentum price: say a policy cost $600 a year for a $10,000 benefit: against that benefit the total paid reaches $10,000 after about 17 years, around age 83 for someone who joined at 66. Past that point they exceed the benefit. This is not a savings or investment plan. Depending on how long you keep your cover, the total premiums you pay could exceed the benefit paid. The benefit may not cover the cost of a funeral, which FDANZ's 2026 report puts at $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial for 50 guests (FDANZ). Enter your own quote in the break-even calculator, and check the amount against the funeral cover amount calculator.
Premiums can also change. The wording allows a change for everyone on the plan, for a change in tax or other law, or claims experience significantly different from expected, on 30 days' written notice.
Who it can suit after 65
It may suit someone who has been declined for other cover, wants a lump sum set aside for funeral costs, and accepts the early period. It suits them less if they are in good health and could simply save the money, or if they need to protect an income or a debt. Each applicant must be a New Zealander: living in New Zealand and an NZ or Australian citizen, a permanent resident visa holder, or on a valid temporary work visa for at least 12 continuous months. The beneficiary must be a person, not a company or charity, so a funeral director cannot be named. Claims are usually paid within 24 to 48 hours of approval.
Alternatives to weigh
- Saving. Money set aside in an account you do not touch carries none of the early-period risk. See funeral insurance versus saving.
- A prepaid plan, which can affect Funeral Grant eligibility.
- The Work and Income Funeral Grant, up to $2,697.43, which has its own tests and can be affected by other help (Work and Income).
- Cover that asks health questions. Some insurers publish entry ages past 65, and a licensed adviser can ask them on your behalf. Acceptance is the insurer's decision. See guaranteed acceptance for seniors.

Adviser's view
After 65 the realistic no-health-question product from Momentum is Funeral Insurance, which pays a fixed $3,000 to $30,000 and nothing like the $300,000 of Quick Life. Its 24-month rule is the biggest risk if your health is poor, and the premiums run to age 89. Run the arithmetic and compare it with saving before you buy.
