Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, and Quick Life accepts ages 18 to 65. At 66 to 75, only Funeral Insurance is open. Neither product takes a new applicant over 75. These are the entry limits in the policy wordings, as at 20 October 2026; they are not a promise of acceptance if you meet other rules such as residency.
An entry age is the oldest or youngest age at which you can start a policy. It is not the age at which cover ends. The tables and notes below show which Momentum Life product, if any, is open at each age, how the wording treats age mistakes, and where to go if you are too old for either. If you are over 75, read the section on options before the buttons on this page: neither Momentum product is open to you, and nothing here suggests otherwise.

Between 40 and 65 you can look at both. They are different products: Funeral Insurance is $3,000 to $30,000 with level premiums to the 89th birthday, while Quick Life is $50,000 to $300,000 with premiums that step up each year to 75. The benefits comparison sets them side by side.
Funeral Insurance: 40 to 75
Funeral Insurance is guaranteed-acceptance cover with no medicals, health questions or paperwork. To apply you must be a "New Zealander" in the wording's sense: living in New Zealand at application and an NZ or Australian citizen, a permanent resident visa holder, or in New Zealand continuously for at least 12 months on a valid temporary work visa.
Age matters in four places:
- Entry. Each person insured must be aged 40 to 75 at entry; the wording's entry-age table applies to the person insured. A family policy can hold up to four people, each a partner or relative of the owner.
- Premiums. The premium is a level rate fixed each year until the 89th birthday, then no more premiums are payable and cover continues for life. The rate can change for everyone on the same offer only for a change in tax or other law, or claims experience significantly different from expected, on 30 days' written notice.
- The early limit. For the first 24 months, only death from an accident within 90 days is paid. Any other death pays nothing and all premiums for that person are refunded.
- The cost over time. A person who starts at 75 and lives to 89 pays for 14 years. Total premiums could exceed the benefit, and the benefit may not cover a whole funeral.
Funeral Insurance has no terminal illness benefit.
Quick Life: 18 to 65
Quick Life is guaranteed-acceptance life cover with no health questions or medical exams. The residency rule differs from Funeral Insurance: the wording accepts an NZ or Australian citizen, a permanent resident visa holder, or a work visa holder with 6 months or more in New Zealand. Momentum's site adds that it is not available to applicants diagnosed with a terminal illness or in palliative or hospice care.
Age matters here too:
- Entry ends at 65. If the correct age at the cover start date was over 65, the wording says the policy is void from the start and all premiums are refunded.
- Misstated age. If the age was stated wrongly but the person was within the limit, the benefit can be adjusted to match the premium that applies, or the difference refunded.
- Premiums step up each year with age (and are recalculated for gender and smoking status) until 75, then are fixed. A 56-year-old taking Quick Life will see premiums rise for the next 19 years.
- The 2-year limit. For the first 2 years, pre-existing conditions and suicide are excluded. Cover rises 3% a year until age 75 or a $500,000 cap, whichever is first, unless you opt out.
- At 75. The wording says "$20,000 of your benefit will be free" and gives the option to elect a free $20,000 funeral benefit or continue Quick Life with the free component. Indexation stops.
Why only Funeral Insurance is open from 66 to 75
Because Momentum's two products set their limits separately. Quick Life closes at 65, and Funeral Insurance stays open until 75, so the band between is covered by Funeral Insurance alone. If you are in that band and want more than $30,000 of cover, Momentum has nothing to offer, and Funeral Insurance's cap is $30,000 per person across all Momentum funeral policies.
Can an adult child buy a policy for a parent?
For Funeral Insurance, yes on the wording's terms. A parent counts as a "Relative" of the owner, and the owner must be a natural person and a New Zealander. The parent must be aged 40 to 75 and a New Zealander. The beneficiary must be a natural person; Momentum cannot pay a company, charity or other organisation directly. For Quick Life, the wording lists owners as usually the person insured, or an immediate family member "limited to parents or siblings" with the consent of each person insured. It does not list a child owning a parent's policy, so ask Momentum before you rely on it (see contact details). Our guide to funeral insurance for parents covers this in more depth.
Options if you are over 75
Momentum has no product for you, so these buttons are not the right route. Other insurers publish different limits, which change, so check each insurer's current terms.
| Option | Published entry age | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NZ Seniors and OneChoice funeral cover | 18 to 79 | No health questions; accidental death only for 12 months |
| AA Life Funeral Cover | 50 to 79 | No health questions; accident only for 24 months, premiums refunded for another cause in that time |
| Chubb Life Funeral Cover | 50 to 80 | No health questions; accident only for 24 months |
| Cover with health questions | Varies | NZ Seniors Life to 79 and Golden Insurance to 80, subject to acceptance |
Read the early-claim limit in each wording; guaranteed acceptance does not mean the policy pays from day one. For the options in detail, see life insurance over 75, funeral insurance over 80, the broader funeral insurance age limits and life insurance over 60. You can test product age limits with our guaranteed acceptance eligibility checker. Savings, or a prepaid plan, can be an alternative; so can doing nothing.
If you already hold a Momentum policy that you bought within these limits, it carries on under its own terms.
About the insurer
If you are inside the age bands, remember that the insurer is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best, affirmed 11 February 2026, in the "vulnerable" range of A.M. Best's scale, and that its reported solvency ratio was 107% at 30 June 2026 (Momentum Life: Financial strength). Neither figure changes with your age. The review sets out the trade-offs.

Adviser's view
Momentum has no product for anyone over 75, and between 66 and 75 only Funeral Insurance is open. If you are in that band or above, the age rule narrows your choice before price or health come into it. Other insurers publish funeral cover to 79 or 80, so check those before you give up on cover.
