Buying funeral insurance for a parent

Yes, an adult child can own a Momentum Life Funeral Insurance policy on a parent. The wording counts a parent as a "Relative" of the owner, so the policy can insure them if they are a New Zealander aged 40 to 75 at entry. The first 24 months pay only for accidental death; any other death in that window pays no benefit and all premiums for that parent are refunded. There is no health question, and no pre-existing-condition clause.
What the wording allows
Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance offers a single policy for "You or a Partner/Relative" and a family policy for up to four people, each of whom must be a partner or relative (Momentum Life: Funeral Insurance Policy Wording). The definition of Relative includes the parent or grandparent of the owner, and also of the owner's partner. So the same policy can insure your mother, your father-in-law or a grandparent, as long as each is a New Zealander and aged 40 to 75 when cover starts. For who else counts, see family funeral insurance.
Three roles matter, and they can be three different people:
| Role | Who | What it means in the wording |
|---|---|---|
| Policy owner | You, the adult child | A natural person and a New Zealander. Pays the premiums, can change the payment method, can cancel with 30 days' notice |
| Life insured | Your parent | Must be a New Zealander, aged 40 to 75 at entry. The person whose death triggers the benefit |
| Beneficiary | Chosen by the owner | Must be a natural person. Momentum cannot pay a company, charity or other organisation |
Where the money goes
When the parent who is insured dies, the wording says benefit payments are made to "you as the Policy Owner". If you are the owner, the benefit comes to you. If you have died, it goes to the beneficiaries you nominated, and otherwise to the executor of your estate. A funeral director cannot be named as beneficiary, because the beneficiary has to be a natural person. Momentum says valid claims are usually paid within 24 to 48 hours of approval, so the clock starts when the claim is approved, not at the death. A claim needs proof, which may include a death certificate and a form completed by a medical practitioner, and Momentum will not pay unless all premiums due have been paid and the policy has not been cancelled.
Does your parent have to agree?
The Funeral Insurance wording we read does not say whether the insured person's consent is required, so we cannot tell you it is or is not. Momentum's application may ask. In the meantime, speak to your parent first. The policy is about their death, you will be paying for it for years, and the cover depends on their age and residency. For comparison, Momentum's Quick Life wording does require each insured person's consent when someone else owns the policy, and it limits owners to parents or siblings, so a child owning Quick Life cover on a parent is not listed. Quick Life also excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years (Momentum Life: Quick Life Insurance Policy Wording, November 2025).
Which parents are eligible
- Aged 40 to 75 at entry. The age is the parent's, on the day cover starts. A parent aged 76 or over cannot be accepted by Momentum, and nothing on this page should be read as saying otherwise.
- A New Zealander. The parent must live in New Zealand at application and be a citizen, a permanent resident visa holder, or on a valid temporary work visa with 12 continuous months here. See funeral insurance for non-residents if a parent lives overseas.
- Within the $30,000 limit. The most Momentum will pay on one life across all its funeral policies is $30,000. If your parent already has a Momentum funeral policy, the new one reduces to fit and the extra premiums are refunded.
Health does not affect acceptance. That is useful for a parent who might be declined elsewhere, and it is the reason for the 24-month window below.
A worked example, with round numbers
Say you own a $10,000 policy on a parent who is 68. These amounts are an illustration, not a quote.
| What happens | What the policy does |
|---|---|
| Parent dies of illness in month 14 | No benefit. All premiums paid for your parent are refunded to the account linked to the policy |
| Parent dies in an accident in month 14, within 90 days of the accident | Three times the benefit: $30,000 |
| Parent dies of any cause in month 30 | The benefit: $10,000 (or $30,000 if the cause is an accident within 90 days of the accident) |
| Parent lives to their 89th birthday | Premiums stop. Cover continues for life |
Premiums are level each year until the 89th birthday, but they can change for everyone on the same plan if tax law or claims experience changes, on at least 30 days' written notice. Because the policy is not a savings plan, the total you pay over the years can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. Test that against your parent's age on the cost guide.
Owner choice: you or your parent
Your parent could own the policy themselves and name you as beneficiary. That keeps control with them, and the benefit goes to you after their death. It also puts the premiums on them. If you are paying, owning it yourself keeps you in charge of the payments and the cancellation, but you carry the commitment: if a premium stays unpaid for more than a month Momentum can cancel the policy, which ends the cover. Decide who will keep paying, from which account, and what happens if the person paying cannot.
Questions to settle with your parent
- Do they have savings or a prepaid funeral plan already? FDANZ's 2026 survey averages were $11,700 for a cremation funeral and $14,300 with a burial, both for 50 attendees (FDANZ, 2026 New Zealand Funeral Industry Trends Report).
- Who will arrange the funeral, and do they know what the parent wants?
- Is $3,000 to $30,000 a sensible amount, or will they need more?
- Can you afford the premiums until the 89th birthday, or until you decide to stop?
- What would the 24-month window mean for your parent? A death from illness in the first two years returns the premiums rather than paying a benefit, whatever the parent's health when they joined.
Alternatives and help
The Work and Income Funeral Grant can be paid where the person who died was your parent, up to $2,697.43 (page updated 24 June 2026), subject to income and asset tests, and a prepaid funeral account counts as an asset in the grant's test, so it can affect whether you get it (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). Ask Work and Income how an insurance payout would be treated. See also funeral insurance versus saving and the Funeral Grant guide.
If your parent is over 75, Momentum cannot help. Other insurers publish higher entry ages, for example AA Life to 79 and Chubb Life to 80, with their own early-death windows (AA Life, Chubb). See funeral insurance over 70 and age limits.

Adviser's view
Owning a funeral policy on your parent is allowed under Momentum Life's wording, and it puts the payout in your hands when they die. It also makes you responsible for the premiums for as long as the policy runs, which is until the parent's 89th birthday unless it is cancelled. The parent must be 40 to 75 and living in New Zealand, and the first 24 months pay only for accidents. Talk it through with your parent before you apply, and compare it with their own savings or a prepaid plan.
