If you are aged 66 to 75, you can still apply for Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, which has guaranteed acceptance and no health questions. Entry stops at age 75. The benefit ranges from $3,000 to $30,000, with level premiums fixed until your 89th birthday. Over 75, Momentum accepts no new applicants; other insurers go higher, and a licensed adviser can discuss alternatives.

What is open from 66

Momentum's guaranteed-acceptance life cover, Quick Life, takes new applicants from 18 to 65 only, so from 66 Funeral Insurance is the one Momentum guaranteed-acceptance product you can start. Its wording says a policy started by someone whose true age was over 65 is void, with the premiums refunded (Momentum Life: Quick Life Policy Wording, November 2025). For the step before this, see funeral insurance over 60.

The Funeral Insurance rules, from the policy wording (Momentum Life: Funeral Insurance Policy Wording, 17 August 2023):

Years of premiums by starting age

Premiums stop at the 89th birthday, so the age you start sets the maximum number of years you pay. This is simple subtraction, not a price:

Age at start Most years of premiums to the 89th birthday
66 23
68 21
70 19
72 17
75 14

Momentum publishes no funeral premium and QuoteHub does not publish one, so we do not show a total. Ask for the quoted premium and multiply it yourself. The break-even calculator can help.

Who else accepts new applicants from 66

As at 20 October 2026, from each insurer's own pages. The ages in the first column are the age you are when you apply:

Insurer Open until Early window Premiums stop
Momentum Life 75 24 months, accident only; all premiums refunded on other death 89th birthday
NZ Seniors, OneChoice (Pinnacle Life) 79 12 months, accident only; OneChoice says no refund after cooling-off 85
AA Life (Asteron Life) 79 24 months; 100% premium refund on natural-cause death Anniversary after 90th birthday
Chubb Life 80 24 months; 100% refund inside 24 months At claim, at 90, or on entering long-term care
Unity 75 Applies, length not stated Not stated
Greenwich Life 70 24 months When total paid equals the benefit

This means a 66-year-old has all six to look at, and a 71-year-old has five. Greenwich Life's feature that premiums stop when the total paid equals the benefit is worth noting, because it is the only plan of those where you cannot pay more than the benefit. The full comparison is in our funeral insurance age limits guide.

What the 24-month window means at this age

The window is the same length at 66 as at 40, but its effect is different. If you die of an illness inside the first 24 months, Momentum pays nothing and refunds your premiums, so your family would need another source for the funeral. An accident is paid at three times the benefit. After the 24 months, death from any cause is covered. Increasing the benefit later starts a new 24-month window for the increase.

Check the free look too. Momentum's runs 30 days from the Acceptance Date, with a full refund if no claim has been made. See how funeral insurance works for the mechanics.

If you are close to 75

Nobody over 75 can start Momentum Funeral Insurance, so if you are near the limit, check the entry rule with Momentum before you rely on it. If you are 76 or older, the options are narrower; see guaranteed acceptance life insurance over 75 and funeral insurance over 80.

Adviser's view

From 66 you are choosing among funeral policies only. Entry ages, premium end ages and the early-death rule differ more than the headline benefit does, so those are the points to compare. Remember the benefit is small, total premiums can pass it, and a policy bought close to a cut-off age leaves little time for the 24-month window to pass.
