AA Life insurance review: cover and value considerations

AA Life Insurance is the New Zealand Automobile Association's direct insurance brand. Asteron Life Limited provides and underwrites every AA Life policy, and Asteron states a rating of A+ (Strong) from Fitch Australia. AA sells seven covers, from Life Cover to Funeral Cover. Life Cover needs no medical exam but asks health and lifestyle questions; Funeral Cover asks no medical questions. Life Cover premiums are recalculated every anniversary.

In short

Who is AA Life, and who actually underwrites it?

AA Life Insurance is a direct-market insurance brand, which means the AA sells policies to the public without an adviser in the middle. The policy documents state that "AA Life policies are provided and underwritten by Asteron Life Limited" (Base Policy Wording, April 2026). The legal insurer for any claim is therefore Asteron Life, not the AA. The wording adds: "When your policy starts, Asteron Life will pay a commission to AA Life." That does not mean the cover is worse, but it is how the AA is paid, and AA's website says it is "general information" and not financial advice (AA Life Insurance).

The insurer behind it

Asteron Life Limited holds a Fitch rating of A+ (Strong); AA prints the same grade on its page. On 5 August 2026 Fitch placed it on Rating Watch Positive, which signals that a one-notch upgrade to AA- is under consideration if the transfer of Resolution Life's New Zealand business to Asteron completes (Asteron Life). Asteron's disclosure shows an adjusted solvency ratio of 107% at 30 June 2026, a margin of $47.88 million (Asteron Life: Financial strength). Resolution Life completed buying Asteron Life's New Zealand business from Suncorp on 3 February 2025 (Suncorp NZ), and Asteron says it will become Acenda Life from 2027, subject to regulatory approval. Our Asteron Life review goes through the insurer in detail.

What AA Life covers

AA's cover pages describe seven covers, and each has its own ages, limits and exclusions. Figures were read from AA's pages on 20 October 2026. The April 2026 policy wording set covers six of the seven; Funeral Cover sits in an older wording (November 2024), so check the document that comes with your policy.

Cover Ages at application What it pays Notable limit
Life Cover 16 to 59 Up to $1.5 million on death or terminal illness Self-inflicted death excluded for 13 months
Income Protection 18 to 55 Up to 75% of income, to $8,000 a month Wait of 30, 60 or 90 days; benefit period 2 or 5 years
Serious Illness 18 to 59 Lump sum up to $1 million on defined illness 90-day stand-down; survive 14 days
Cancer Care 18 to 59 Up to $100,000 on cancer diagnosis Excludes pre-existing conditions from the previous five years
Serious Injury 18 to 55 Up to $5,000 depending on the injury Each condition paid once in 24 months; survive 14 days
Accidental Death 16 to 74 $75,000 to $500,000 Accident only; no waiting period
Funeral Cover 50 to 79 $5,000 to $30,000 Non-accidental death only after 24 months

Direct cover and underwritten cover

AA's Life Cover has no medical exam, yet applicants still answer health and lifestyle questions, and Asteron can apply exclusions based on the answers (Life Cover wording, page 6). Our AA eligibility guide sets out the entry gates. An adviser-placed policy can be fully underwritten, with an assessment tailored to your history. It is not obviously slower or heavier: Chubb's published guide asks only a personal statement up to $500,000 at every age band. QuoteHub's Premium Index does not price AA Life, so we cannot say which would be cheaper for you.

Premiums and limits

Premiums on the covers in the April 2026 wording are recalculated every policy anniversary, with 28 days' written notice. On Life Cover the cover amount also grows each year by the greater of CPI and 2% to a $1.5 million cap, and you pay for that growth unless you decline it. A Premium Freeze Benefit stops the premium rising, at the price of permanently reducing the cover to what the fixed premium buys. The numbers, with a 20-year example, are in Is AA Life good value?

What claims and reviews tell you

AA's page shows "99.6% of claims paid out", footnoted as the claim acceptance ratio for January to December 2025 across Life, Cancer Care, Funeral and Accidental Death Cover. It excludes Income Protection, Serious Illness and Serious Injury. Asteron's own 97% figure covers a different period. Claims percentages are not defined alike, so QuoteHub does not rank insurers on them. We have not audited customer-review sites and do not quote review scores. Asteron says it usually pays within 48 hours of accepting a Life Cover claim (Life Cover wording, page 6).

To claim, call Asteron Life Claims on 0800 737 101 or email [email protected]. The wording says to tell Asteron about a possible claim as soon as possible. AA Life's sales and service line is 0800 AA LIFE (0800 225 433).

Complaints

AA's wording says Asteron Life belongs to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) Scheme, a free service you can use if a complaint is not resolved (IFSO 0800 888 202). Asteron also has a Customer Resolution Service, and complaints can go in writing to The Complaints Officer, Asteron Life Limited, PO Box 894, Wellington 6140.

Cancelling or changing a policy

You have a 30-day cooling-off period from the day the policy started and receive a full premium refund if you have not claimed. After that you can cancel at any time, and AA refunds any premium received after the cancellation date. The policy has no cash value. If AA stops a policy for an unpaid premium (30 days after a missed payment), you can apply to restart it within 12 months.

Where AA Life fits, and where it does not

It may suit someone aged 16 to 59 who wants to buy online, is comfortable answering health and lifestyle questions, and values AA's 5% member discount (which applies to the total premium). It suits less well someone who wants advice, is over 59, or may attract an exclusion. Momentum's Quick Life is the no-health-questions alternative. It takes ages 18 to 65 and excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years. Momentum Life Limited holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair) (financial strength page).
