How AA Life insurance compares with its competitors

AA Life Insurance is sold direct by the New Zealand Automobile Association, and Asteron Life Limited provides and underwrites it. Its Life Cover takes people aged 16 to 59 for up to $1.5 million, with no medical exam but with health and lifestyle questions. Its real alternatives are other direct sellers, Momentum's guaranteed-acceptance Quick Life and adviser-placed policies.

In short

What "competitor" means for AA Life

AA Life Insurance is a New Zealand direct-market life insurance brand. The New Zealand Automobile Association (Incorporated) distributes it, and Asteron Life Limited provides and underwrites it (AA Life Insurance). A person buys it online or by phone without an adviser, answers health and lifestyle questions instead of having a medical, and receives a policy summary showing the cover amount and premium. Its competitors are therefore not only other insurers. They are three different ways of buying cover: direct from a brand like AA Life or Southern Cross Life, guaranteed acceptance with no health questions, or an adviser who places an underwritten policy with a panel insurer. Each trades something. Direct is quick but you do the comparing. Guaranteed acceptance asks nothing about health and restricts the early years. Adviser placement adds advice and, usually, a fuller assessment.

How the AA and Asteron arrangement works

AA's own wording says AA Life policies are "provided and underwritten by Asteron Life Limited", and that Asteron Life pays a commission to AA Life when a policy starts (base wording, page 5). AA's page prints Asteron's Fitch rating as A+ (Strong) (AA Life Insurance). The rating outlook, solvency figures and the planned move to the Acenda Life name are in our AA Life review and Asteron Life review. Asteron's Acenda Life page does not mention AA Life, so this page says nothing about AA Life's future.

AA Life against fully underwritten adviser policies

The first difference is who you deal with. An adviser can ask several insurers on your behalf and explain the answers; AA's site says it provides "general information" that is "not intended to be financial advice", and points customers to a financial adviser for advice (AA Life Insurance). The second is the evidence asked for. Chubb's published underwriting guide asks for only a personal statement up to $500,000 at every age band and adds its Code A medical evidence requirements from $500,001 at 61 and over (Chubb underwriting guide, May 2025). The guide calls this a guideline, and the underwriter may ask for more. So a fully underwritten policy is not always heavy on medicals, but it can be. The third is price, and here there is no honest shortcut. AA Life is not among the six insurers in QuoteHub's Premium Index, which prices adviser-channel cover. Ask AA and an adviser for quotes on the same age, amount and smoker status, and compare them. See also bank cover versus a broker.

AA Life against guaranteed acceptance

Both AA Life and Momentum's Quick Life skip the medical. The difference is the questions. AA Life Cover asks health and lifestyle questions and can attach an exclusion to the answers; AA's wording says no claim is paid for anything the person insured "received and accepted an exclusion" for (Life Cover wording, page 6). Momentum's Quick Life asks no health questions, but it excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years. If death from a pre-existing condition happens in that time and no claim is payable, premiums are refunded. Quick Life takes ages 18 to 65, and it pays on accidental death, on death from any cause after the first 2 years, and on terminal illness. Momentum Life Limited holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair); see its financial strength page. Our guaranteed acceptance versus full medical page sets out the trade-off, and a healthy person can usually get more cover for less with fully underwritten cover through an adviser.

Terminal illness and accidental death

AA's Life Cover includes a Terminal Illness Benefit that pays the full Life Cover amount if life expectancy is not greater than 12 months, and a Funeral Support Benefit of up to $15,000 on written notification of death, deducted from the later payment. Accidental Death Cover is a separate AA product for ages 16 to 74, from $75,000 to $500,000, with no waiting period, but it pays only for death solely and directly from an accident (AA Accidental Death Cover). Quick Life's terminal illness test is also 12 months. On funeral cover the two sellers differ more: AA's Funeral Cover is for ages 50 to 79 and Momentum's Funeral Insurance for ages 40 to 75, and in the first 24 months Momentum pays only for accidental death. Total premiums on any funeral policy can add up to more than the benefit, and the benefit may not meet the whole funeral. See the AA funeral cover page.

How premiums are structured

On structure, AA's Life Cover is stepped in practice: AA recalculates the premium at each policy anniversary, and the cover amount grows each year unless you decline, with the premium rising to match (base wording page 5; Life Cover wording page 6). Quick Life's premiums also step with age until 75 and are then fixed. Momentum's Funeral Insurance is different again: its premium is level until the 89th birthday and then stops, although the rate can be changed for everyone on the plan with 30 days' notice. The AA mechanics, with a worked example of how cover and premium grow over 20 years, are in Is AA Life good value?. For how stepped and level premiums behave, see stepped versus level premiums.
