Who handles AMI life insurance policies in NZ?
AMI does not list life insurance among the products it sells. AMI's "Our insurance options" page, read on 20 October 2026, shows car, home, contents, landlord, travel, business and other general insurance, and AMI describes itself as a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited. If you have a life policy you think is "AMI", the insurer named on your policy schedule is the one that holds it.
In short
- We found no life or funeral product on AMI's own insurance list. We cannot say what AMI sold in the past, so this page makes no claim about a historical AMI life book.
- The reliable way to find who holds a life policy is the policy schedule or the insurer's letters, not the brand you remember.
- Several life insurer names have changed or been absorbed. The table below lists the ones we can source.
- If you want new cover, Momentum Life's Quick Life takes ages 18 to 65 and Funeral Insurance 40 to 75, and an adviser can compare underwritten options.
What AMI's own site shows
On 20 October 2026, AMI's "Our insurance options" page listed these groups:
- Car cover, including comprehensive, third party and young driver.
- Home and contents, including landlord and lifestyle block cover.
- Business insurance for vehicles, liability, assets and farms.
- Other cover: travel, caravan, trailer, motorhome, classic vehicle, motorcycle and boat.
Nothing on that list is life insurance. AMI's footer says "AMI Insurance (AMI) is a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited" (AMI: All insurance). Our companion page on AMI funeral insurance reports the same check for funeral cover. Another general insurer name people search for is covered on our page about State life insurance.
General insurance covers loss or damage to things such as a car, a house or a trip. Life insurance pays when a person dies. A home or car policy is built to cover property, not a person's death; read the wording if you think a benefit applies.
Why people search "AMI life insurance"
The searches are mostly one of three things. They are our reading, not data from AMI.
- Someone has AMI car or home insurance and wonders whether it comes with life cover. AMI's insurance list shows no life cover to go with it.
- Someone holds an older life policy and half-remembers the brand. The name may belong to a different company.
- Someone is shopping for life cover and landing on a familiar name.
How to find the insurer that holds your policy
Work through these in order.
- Read the policy schedule. It names the insurer, the policy number and the owner. The schedule matters more than any logo on the envelope.
- Check premium payments. The company named on a bank statement or direct debit may be the insurer or its administrator.
- Check for unclaimed life insurance money. Inland Revenue holds money organisations cannot return, including life insurance; it is generally unclaimed after 5 years, and a claim takes at least 12 weeks. For someone who has died, you will need a copy of the will, the death certificate, a letter of administration or other evidence (IRD: Unclaimed money).
- Ask an adviser or the family's lawyer. They can contact insurers on your behalf with your authority.
- If you are the executor, the guide to what to do when someone dies lists who to notify, including insurers.
Legacy names that get confused
Life insurance brands have changed hands often. These are the changes we can source:
| Name you may remember | Where the business is now | Source |
|---|---|---|
| AMP life policies | Resolution Life New Zealand | Resolution Life NZ, phone 0800 808 267 |
| Cigna Life (NZ) | Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited (purchase completed 1 July 2022) | Chubb press release |
| Westpac Life-NZ | Fidelity Life (sold 28 February 2022; Fidelity has underwritten Westpac life products since 30 June 2023) | Fidelity: Westpac |
| Policies bought from Momentum before 14 March 2018 | Fidelity Life, not Momentum | Momentum Life: FAQs |
See our pages on AMP life insurance and Sovereign life insurance. Resolution Life New Zealand and Asteron Life say they will become Acenda Life from 2027, subject to regulatory approval; nothing changes today.
We have no source that says an AMI-branded life policy moved to any of these insurers. Do not assume a link from the name alone.
What to do with an old policy
- Keep paying until you have a replacement in force. The Financial Markets Authority says to keep the old policy running until the new one starts, and to watch for new qualifying periods, pre-existing condition exclusions and different premiums (FMA: Insurance).
- A new insurer sees your full history, so answer its questions in full (IFSO).
- Do not cancel because the brand is unfamiliar. Ask the insurer what the policy covers, the sum insured and the premium basis.
If you want new life cover
Cover with health questions is priced on your health and age, and a licensed adviser can compare insurers. If you would be declined or heavily loaded elsewhere, or want cover in place without health questions, Momentum Life has two guaranteed acceptance products. Momentum's Quick Life accepts ages 18 to 65, with cover from $50,000 to $300,000; the first 2 years exclude pre-existing conditions and suicide, and premiums are stepped. Funeral Insurance accepts ages 40 to 75 with benefits of $3,000 to $30,000; in its first 24 months only accidental death is paid, and all premiums for that person are refunded for another cause. Total premiums can exceed the benefit. A healthy person can usually get more cover for less with fully underwritten cover. See Quick Life and the guaranteed acceptance eligibility checker, and whether life insurance is worth it.
Momentum Life Limited holds an A.M. Best financial strength rating of B (Fair); read its financial strength page. The buttons on this page open Momentum's online application.
If something goes wrong
Complain to the insurer first. Every business offering retail financial services must belong to an approved dispute resolution scheme, and the FMA lists four: the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, IFSO, Financial Services Complaints, and the Financial Dispute Resolution Service (FMA: Disputes). Momentum is an IFSO member.

Frequently asked questions
Does AMI sell life insurance?
Not on its own list of insurance options as at 20 October 2026. That list is general insurance.
Who underwrites AMI?
AMI describes itself as a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited. We have not read an underwriter statement for any AMI life product, because we found none.
I have an old AMI policy. Who do I contact?
Check the schedule for the insurer's name and contact it. If the schedule is lost, an adviser or the Inland Revenue unclaimed money search may help.
Do I need guaranteed acceptance life insurance?
Only if health questions would be a barrier. See what guaranteed acceptance is before deciding.
