AMP Life NZ: finding your legacy policy provider

Old AMP Life policies in New Zealand are serviced by Resolution Life New Zealand, which labels its bonus rates "formerly AMP Life". Resolution Life says its whole of life and endowment policies are no longer sold to new customers. Your contract continues on its own terms. Call Resolution Life on 0800 808 267 about service, or 0800 267 425 for a claim.

In short

Who services an AMP Life policy now?

A legacy policy is one an insurer still services but no longer sells. Resolution Life New Zealand services the old AMP Life book. Its Whole of Life, Endowment and Pure Endowment page carries two sets of 2026 bonus rates, one titled "Resolution Life bonus rates (formerly AMP Life) 2026" and another "formerly National Mutual Life Association" (Resolution Life). Its life insurance page lists Lifetrack and the Risk Protection Plan, and its site still has an "Amp NZ login" menu label. That is the only trace of the AMP name the pages show.

What the pages do not say is when or how the book moved to Resolution Life. Resolution Life's own pages give no sale date, and no primary source we could read gives one, so this page states none. The brand on your documents tells you where to start.

Name on your documents Where to start
AMP Life, Lifetrack Resolution Life New Zealand, 0800 808 267
National Mutual Life Association (NMLA) Resolution Life; its site has a separate guide for the NMLA book
Resolution Life Same company, same number
Asteron Life or Acenda Life Asteron Life Limited, a sister company in the same group

Resolution Life's FAQs say the My Resolution Life dashboard "will show you the name of your product, policy number, Owner of the policy, name of insured person/s". Other AMP-branded businesses, such as banking or investments, are separate and not covered here.

The ownership chain, with dates that can be sourced

The FAQ's message to policyholders: "No, there's no change to your policy or account, your cover or how you make a claim." Premiums and payment methods stay the same, and the page asks you to keep a record of the change with your policy documents.

Financial strength

Fitch gave Resolution Life New Zealand a first-time "A" rating with a stable outlook; the page shows no date. The group entity, Resolution Life Australasia, holds AA- (Very Strong), a different entity (Resolution Life: Financial strength). Your policy schedule names the company that insures you, so check which of the two applies before you read either rating as yours. Asteron Life, which would become the insurer, is rated A+ (Strong) by Fitch and was placed on Rating Watch Positive on 5 August 2026. See our Resolution Life and Asteron Life pages.

What legacy products look like

Older whole of life and endowment policies work differently from today's term cover. Resolution Life's page lists annual bonus documents, and states that policy loans and premium arrears on these products carry interest at 6% a year, effective 1 June 2026. The terms of a particular policy are in its schedule and product guide, not in this article. Our guide to term versus whole of life explains the structures. The pages we read do not say whether Lifetrack or the Risk Protection Plan are open to new customers.

Should you keep a legacy policy or replace it?

Treat the policy as an asset first. Before replacing any legacy policy, work through this:

  1. Get the policy schedule and product guide from Resolution Life.
  2. Note the benefits you hold now, any accrued bonuses, and the premium.
  3. Ask a licensed adviser what a replacement would cost at your age and health, and what it would not include.
  4. Do not cancel until the replacement is confirmed in force. The FMA lists three risks of switching: a new qualifying period, existing health problems excluded as pre-existing conditions, and changed premiums (FMA: Insurance).

A new insurer sees your full history, and older benefits may be impossible to buy again. Never cancel a whole of life or endowment policy without advice. Our guide to who holds your old policy lists other legacy brands.

Making a claim on an AMP-era policy

For life, trauma, income protection and disability claims, call 0800 267 425 on weekdays, 9am to 5pm. The postal address is Resolution Life Claims, PO Box 1692, Wellington 6140, and the email is [email protected]. For a life claim you can generally expect to supply a certified death certificate with cause of death and the policy document. If you cannot find the policy document, Resolution Life says that will not delay the claim; complete the declaration of loss form instead. A dedicated case manager is assigned (Resolution Life: How to make a claim). If a death has happened, our what to do when someone dies guide covers the wider steps.

If you need new cover instead

AMP-branded cover is not on sale to new customers, so any new policy comes from another insurer. If you cannot get underwritten cover, Momentum's Quick Life accepts ages 18 to 65 without health questions, but pre-existing conditions and suicide are excluded for the first 2 years. For funeral costs only, Momentum's Funeral Insurance accepts ages 40 to 75; in its first 24 months it pays only for accidental death, and total premiums can add up to more than the benefit. Neither accepts new applicants over 75. Momentum Life Limited holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair) (financial strength page). Compare with a licensed adviser if you can.
