Does AMI offer funeral insurance in NZ?
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
AMI does not list funeral insurance among its insurance options. On 20 October 2026, AMI's website showed car, home and contents, landlord, travel, business and other vehicle cover, and no life or funeral product. AMI describes itself as a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited. If you want funeral cover, you need a provider that sells it.
What our check found
We read AMI's "Our insurance options" page on 20 October 2026 (AMI: All insurance). That page lists these groups:
- Car: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, third party only, young driver, and electric vehicle cover.
- Home and contents: home, contents, lifestyle block, and landlord cover.
- Business: vehicles, liability, assets, business interruption and farm insurance.
- Other: travel, caravan, trailer, motorhome, classic vehicle, motorcycle and boat.
- Services: AMI Roadside Rescue, AMI HomeHub and AMI MotorHub.
Nothing on the list is life insurance, funeral insurance or any other cover that pays a sum on death. The footer of the site says "AMI Insurance (AMI) is a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited."
This is a dated check, not a statement about what AMI will do next. We have not seen any announcement either way, and we say nothing about future plans. If AMI adds a product, its own site will show it first.
Why the search turns up AMI
AMI is a well-known name in New Zealand car and home insurance, and a familiar brand is a natural place to look first. General insurers and life insurers can also be easy to mix up. General insurance covers loss or damage to things, such as a car, a house or a trip. Funeral insurance is a type of life insurance: it pays a set sum when the insured person dies.
AMI's insurance does not substitute for funeral cover. A car, home or contents policy does not pay towards a funeral. If you hold an AMI policy and want funeral cover as well, you would buy it separately from a different provider.
We found no mention on that page of a life insurance partner that sells funeral cover under the AMI name. If someone contacts you offering "AMI funeral cover", ask which company issues the policy and check it against AMI's own site. AMI also publishes a "Staying alert to scams" page in its footer.
Who does sell funeral insurance in New Zealand
These providers sell a funeral product on their own pages as at 20 October 2026. Details are from the insurers' own documents.
| Provider | Insurer behind it | Entry age | Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Momentum Life Funeral Insurance | Momentum Life Limited | 40 to 75 | $3,000 to $30,000 |
| NZ Seniors | Pinnacle Life Limited | 18 to 79 | $3,000 to $30,000 |
| OneChoice | Pinnacle Life Limited | 18 to 79 | $3,000 to $30,000 |
| AA Life Funeral Cover | Asteron Life Limited | 50 to 79 | $5,000 to $30,000 |
| Chubb Life Funeral Cover | Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited | 50 to 80 | Up to $30,000 |
| Greenwich Life, The Funeral Plan | Autosure Insurance Limited | 30 to 70 | $5,000 to $20,000 |
| Unity | Underwritten by Pinnacle Life, issued by Unity Credit Union | 18 to 75 | $5,000 to $15,000 depending on cover type |
Two names that still appear in some comparison lists no longer sell one. Partners Life stopped selling funeral cover on 15 June 2020, and Pinnacle Life withdrew its own-brand funeral insurance in May 2021, pointing buyers to NZ Seniors and OneChoice. None of the main banks sells a guaranteed-acceptance funeral product either. See the list of funeral insurance companies and our page on State funeral insurance if State is the name you have in mind.
What these policies have in common
Most funeral policies of this kind accept you without health questions. In return they restrict the first one to two years: only accidental death pays, and the insurer refunds premiums on another cause of death (NZ Seniors and OneChoice do not refund them). With Momentum Life the window is 24 months, and the benefit is paid for death from any cause after that. Our guide to what funeral insurance is sets out the basics.
What to check before you buy
- Entry age. The bands above differ by years, so the right provider can change with your birthday.
- The early-death window. Check how long it is and whether premiums are returned.
- Total premiums against the benefit. Total premiums can add up to more than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. Work out the total to the age you might reach.
- Who the insurer is and how it is rated. Names on a brand do not always match the company that pays the claim. Momentum Life's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), which Momentum's own table places in its "Vulnerable" range; see its financial strength page. Other insurers are rated by different agencies on different scales, so compare within one agency's scale.
- Existing cover. Life insurance you already have may include an early funeral payment. Check before you add a second policy.
Other ways to pay for a funeral
Funeral insurance is one option among several. Savings, a prepaid funeral plan and the Work and Income Funeral Grant (up to $2,697.43, with an asset test and, for a partner or child who died, an income test) are the main others (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). Costs vary widely, but FDANZ's 2026 report gives averages of $11,700 for a cremation funeral and $14,300 for a burial funeral in its 50-guest scenario (FDANZ, 2026 New Zealand Funeral Industry Trends Report).
Where to get advice
The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application, one option among those above. If you want to compare providers on your own age and budget, a licensed adviser can do that. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy; how we are paid explains it. Adviser's view
On 20 October 2026 AMI's own list of insurance options showed car, home, contents, landlord, travel, business and other general insurance, and no funeral or life cover. If you want funeral cover you will need to look at a provider that sells it. The checks that matter most are the same for all of them: the early-death window, the entry age and whether total premiums could exceed the benefit.
