Golden Insurance NZ: reviews and legitimacy checks
Golden Insurance is a trading name of Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd, an Australian-registered distributor. The life policies are issued by Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited (FSP13701), which its policy document says is a licensed insurer in New Zealand. The cover is not guaranteed acceptance: applicants aged 40 to 80 answer health and lifestyle questions. You can check each of these claims yourself, and this page shows how.
In short
- Three names matter: Golden Insurance (the brand), Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd (the distributor) and Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited (the insurer that issues the policy) (Golden Insurance: policy document, 21 January 2026).
- Golden's own site says Neilson "is not a licensed financial advice provider in New Zealand" and that "no financial advice is given" (Golden Insurance).
- Its policy document names the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) Scheme as the external complaints service.
- We have not found, and do not publish, a verified complaints count for Golden. Review-site scores change and are not independently checked.
What is Golden Insurance?
Golden Insurance sells life cover to New Zealand residents aged 40 to 80, with the pitch that no medical exam or blood test is needed (Golden Insurance, retrieved 20 October 2026). The website also uses the name "Golden Life Insurance" for the product. That is the same offering, not a separate company.
The policy document sets out the structure: the policy is "distributed and promoted by Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd (Neilson), ABN 52 668 314 896 trading as Golden Insurance as an agent of the insurer Hallmark Life". The insurer is "Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited, NZBN 9429039172631 and FSP 13701", described as a New Zealand branch of an Australian company, and the policy's statutory fund is Hallmark Life's Statutory Fund Number Two (policy document, retrieved 20 October 2026).

What does the policy actually say?
These points come from the 21 January 2026 policy document. Your schedule and wording govern your own cover.
- Eligibility. New Zealand residents aged 40 to 80. Applicants answer health and lifestyle questions. Depending on the answers, the maximum available "may be less".
- Amounts. $10,000 to $250,000 at ages 40 to 60, to $200,000 at 61 to 70, and to $150,000 at 71 to 80.
- What it pays. A lump sum on death, or on a terminal illness diagnosis.
- Waiting period. A waiting period may apply, set out in your schedule. If it does, the benefit is paid only for accidental death during it. For a non-accidental death in that period, all premiums are refunded.
- Suicide. No benefit for intentional self-inflicted injury or attempted suicide before the start date or in the first 13 months.
- Premiums. A "variable age-stepped premium", recalculated each policy anniversary for age and benefit, which "will generally increase each year". An automatic benefit increase, which raises the premium, applies unless you opt out. Premium rates are not guaranteed.
- Cooling off. 30 days from the start date, with premiums refunded if there is no valid claim. After that, cancelling gets no refund, and the policy says you cannot apply to reinstate the cover afterwards.
- Unpaid premiums. The policy is cancelled if a payment stays unpaid for more than 30 days from its due date.
- Risks the document lists itself. Depending on how long you live, you may pay more in premiums than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover all your commitments.
Is Golden Insurance legit? How to check
The honest answer is that a company's legitimacy is something you verify, not something a review page can certify. A fair set of checks:
- Find the insurer's name on the policy document. Here it is Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited, with FSP number 13701.
- Search that name and number on the Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR). Being on the register does not mean a provider is licensed by the FMA, so use it to confirm identity and see which dispute scheme is recorded (FMA).
- Check the Reserve Bank's register of licensed insurers. Hallmark's policy document says it "is a licensed insurer in New Zealand". Confirm that on the register rather than taking our word or its.
- Look for the financial strength rating. Golden's site publishes none. The policy document tells you to "refer to your policy schedule for disclosure of the Financial Strength Rating", so ask for the schedule before you pay and read the rating, its agency and date there.
- Confirm how to complain. Section 9 of the policy document gives Golden's complaints address and says unresolved complaints can go to IFSO after 2 months, a free service whose assessment is binding on the insurer if you accept it.
- Read who is not giving advice. Golden states it gives no financial advice, so deciding how much cover you need is up to you, or to a licensed adviser.
What the reviews and complaints evidence shows
Golden's site says customers rate it "Excellent" on Trustpilot, but it is Golden's own description and the scores on review sites move, so we do not repeat any. IFSO publishes case studies (IFSO), but we found no Golden-specific complaint count, so we do not claim one way or the other. If you have a problem, use Golden's complaints address first ([email protected], 0800 118 048), then IFSO on 0800 888 202. Our insurance complaints guide explains the steps.
How Golden differs from guaranteed acceptance
Search results often blur the two. Golden asks health and lifestyle questions, so it is not guaranteed acceptance. Momentum Life's Quick Life, issued by Momentum Life Limited, asks no health questions.
| Golden Life Insurance | Momentum Quick Life | |
|---|---|---|
| Ages | 40-80 | 18-65 |
| Health questions | Yes | None |
| Cover | $10,000 to $250,000, by age band | $50,000 to $300,000, plus 3% a year to a $500,000 cap |
| Early restriction | Waiting period may apply (accident-only) | First 2 years: pre-existing conditions and suicide excluded |
| Premiums | Age-stepped, reviewed yearly | Stepped to 75, then fixed |
| Insurer | Hallmark Life (rating on schedule) | Momentum Life, A.M. Best B (Fair) |
Quick Life's occupation and pastime exclusions matter at claim time, and Momentum's rating sits in A.M. Best's "Vulnerable" range on Momentum's own table; see its financial strength page. Neither product suits everyone. A route with no health questions mainly helps people who expect to be declined or loaded elsewhere, or who want cover in place fast. A healthy person can often get more cover for less with underwritten cover through an adviser, so test both routes. Read what guaranteed acceptance is and the Quick Life page.
If your real need is money for a funeral, Golden's cover is a larger life policy rather than a funeral product; see Golden Insurance and funeral cover. Momentum's Funeral Insurance takes ages 40 to 75 with no health questions, pays a fixed $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs, and pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. See how funeral insurance works. The buttons on this page go to Momentum Life's own application.
Advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931).
