Finding support for a OnePath life policy in NZ
OnePath is no longer an insurer you can phone. The route QuoteHub has traced for an old OnePath life policy runs from OnePath Life to Cigna and then to Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited, which bought Cigna's New Zealand life business on 1 July 2022. OnePath health policies went a different way, to nib. Your policy schedule, not this page, decides who to call.
In short
- Chubb Life says the Cigna to Chubb change did not affect the terms, coverage or premiums of existing policies (Chubb customer letter).
- The one step we could not tie to a dated primary document is OnePath to Cigna. We give no year for it.
- nib says it bought the OnePath medical business in 2015 (nib: About nib). That is health insurance, not life cover.
- Do not cancel an old policy until anything that replaces it is actually in force.
Who manages existing OnePath life insurance policies in NZ?
Most readers of this page hold, or have inherited, a policy whose paperwork still says OnePath. The cover is a contract. A change of brand does not end it, and in the transfers we have read, the receiving insurer says terms carried over.
Our earlier guide to who holds your old insurance policy records OnePath Life as acquired by Cigna, whose New Zealand business then became Chubb Life. Chubb's own letter confirms the second half: on 1 July 2022 Chubb bought Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited's life insurance business, and Cigna changed its company name to Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited (Chubb customer letter). The letter does not mention OnePath, so the first half rests on our earlier research rather than a Chubb document. That is why the paperwork matters: if your latest letter is signed Chubb Life, you have your answer.
One more point on names. A bank-sold policy can carry the bank's name instead. ANZ's page says its insurance is "underwritten by third party insurers", calls Chubb Life its "life and income insurance partner", and says ANZ Life & Living is closed to new customers, with existing policyholders directed to Chubb Life for questions or claims (ANZ: Life insurance). It does not mention OnePath. See our page on ANZ life insurance.
The history, and what is sourced
| Step | What we can say | Source or status |
|---|---|---|
| OnePath medical to nib | nib says it acquired the OnePath medical business in 2015 | nib: About nib, read 20 October 2026 |
| OnePath Life and Cigna named together | In June 2022, OnePath Life (NZ) Limited and Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited jointly paid $180,000 to the Financial Markets Authority over credit card repayment insurance | FMA enforcement summary, read 20 October 2026 |
| OnePath Life to Cigna | Recorded in QuoteHub's own guide; no date | Not tied to a dated primary document. Stated as a gap |
| Cigna to Chubb | Sale completed 1 July 2022; company renamed Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited | Chubb letter above and Chubb's completion announcement |
| Terms after the name change | "This change will not impact the terms and conditions of your existing policy, coverage or premiums" | Chubb letter |
The second row is worth a second look. The FMA summary still names OnePath Life (NZ) Limited alongside Cigna in June 2022, so an old schedule can carry either name, and a letter from Cigna or Chubb Life is explained by the 2022 sale. It is also why you should not assume the corporate chain from a brand alone.
You may see claims elsewhere that OnePath went to Asteron Life. Nothing we read supports that. Asteron Life is a separate insurer, and if your schedule says Asteron, you contact Asteron.
How to find your policy documents and schedule
The schedule is the page that names the insurer, the people covered, the amounts and any special terms. Work through these in order.
- Look for the schedule and the most recent letter. The newest letter shows the name the insurer uses today.
- Check bank statements for the premium payment. Chubb's letter says that after the change, Chubb Life appears on direct debit and credit card statements instead of Cigna NZ, so the payee name tells you where the money goes.
- Ask the adviser who arranged it. Chubb says an adviser stays your point of contact for information about your cover.
- Contact the insurer for a copy. The letter lists [email protected] and Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited, Private Bag 92131, Victoria Street West, Auckland 1142; check on Chubb Life's website that they are still current. Give the policy number and your date of birth if you have them.
- Search for lost cover. If you cannot find any paperwork, see unclaimed life insurance and our guide to finding old policies.
If you are dealing with a policy after a death, the executor or administrator makes these enquiries, and the claims steps in the next section apply.
How to make a claim on a legacy policy
Chubb Life's claims page says to phone 0508 464 999 or email [email protected], that the team will send a claim form explaining what information is needed, and that it aims to start assessing a claim within five working days of receipt. The page lists Assurance Extra, LifeOne, Funeral Cover, Bill Cover and Income Protection as life claim categories. It shows more than one phone number for some products, so confirm the number on the page when you call. If a policy has an adviser, they can submit the claim for you.
A claim is decided on the wording of your own policy. Do not rely on a general page, including this one, to tell you what your policy pays.
If you disagree with an outcome, complain to the insurer first. Chubb Life says its complaints team acknowledges within two working days and aims to decide within ten, that it issues a deadlock letter if the matter is unresolved or two months have passed, and that you can then go to the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) within 3 months of that letter (Chubb Life: Complaints). IFSO is free to consumers. See also how insurance complaints work.
Can you make changes to an existing OnePath contract?
Usually yes, through the current insurer or your adviser, but each change has its own rules, and they sit in your policy wording. Three things to know first.
- Changes are the insurer's, not the old brand's. Ask Chubb Life, or whoever your schedule names, what your wording allows.
- A new policy is a new assessment. If you replace the cover, the new insurer asks about your current health and sees your history. The Financial Markets Authority says to keep the old policy running until the new one is in force, and warns that a new policy may carry a new qualifying period (FMA: Insurance).
- Older terms can be worth keeping. Our switching guide covers what to compare first.
Our guide to old policies links Chubb's Assurance Extra range to this chain. Neither Chubb's letter nor the Chubb pages we read use the OnePath name, so treat that as a lead to check, not a fact about your policy. Our Cigna guide covers the Cigna-era history.
When to review legacy cover with a licensed financial adviser
Review is sensible when the letter names a different insurer from the one you bought from, when the amount was set years ago, or when the people you wanted covered have changed. A licensed adviser can get your schedule from the insurer, explain what it provides and compare it with what is sold today. Sometimes the answer is to keep it unchanged. Advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931).
The Momentum Life buttons on this page are for taking out new cover, and they do not change an old OnePath or Chubb policy. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner, and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy through our link; see how we are paid. Momentum Life's own A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), and its financial strength page sets out the detail. Quick Life takes applicants aged 18 to 65 and excludes pre-existing conditions and suicide for the first 2 years; see the Quick Life page and our comparison tips. Replacing cover with a product that has an early-years restriction can leave you worse off.
Frequently asked questions
Is a OnePath life policy still valid?
The policy is a contract and continues on its terms until it ends under them. Chubb Life says the change from Cigna did not affect terms, coverage or premiums. Check the schedule for the insurer named today.
Is OnePath the same as ANZ?
ANZ says its insurance is underwritten by third party insurers, and its page directs existing Life & Living policyholders to Chubb Life. It does not mention OnePath, so we do not state how the two names relate.
I have OnePath health insurance. Is that the same?
No. nib says it bought the OnePath medical business in 2015, so health policies go to nib. Life cover is the Chubb Life route in this page.
Who do I call about a letter from Chubb Life that I do not recognise?
Use the contact details on Chubb Life's own website, not a number in the letter you are unsure of. Chubb's customer letter said policyholders would hear from Chubb Life after the sale.
