NZ Seniors funeral insurance review

NZ Seniors funeral insurance is issued by Pinnacle Life Limited and sold under the NZ Seniors name by Greenstone Financial Services. Independent sources point to value as the recurring concern: premiums run to age 85 and can total more than the benefit. In the first 12 months only accidental death pays, and premiums are not refunded for any other death.
NZ Seniors funeral insurance is a guaranteed-acceptance policy for New Zealand residents aged 18 to 79 that pays a lump sum of $3,000 to $30,000 towards funeral costs. Its policy document, issued 23 May 2021, says the benefit is paid for death from any cause from 12 months after the acceptance date, and for accidental death at any time. Premiums are level, stop at the 85th birthday, and cover continues. Pinnacle Life, the insurer, is rated B+ (Good) by A.M. Best. Whether it is good value depends on how long you keep paying, which no review can tell you in advance.
What a review can and cannot tell you
NZ Seniors prints its own star rating and review count on its product page. Those figures are self-published, move over time and cannot be audited, so we do not repeat them. We also found no independent review site with checkable claims data for NZ Seniors, and we found no funeral claims statistics published by NZ Seniors or by Momentum.
So this review uses what can be checked: the policy document, the insurer's financial strength rating, and reporting by Consumer NZ, 1News and the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO). It is one adviser team's reading of those sources, not a score.
Who issues NZ Seniors, and how is the insurer rated
New Zealand Seniors is a trading name of Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited. The contract is with Pinnacle Life Limited, the insurer. The policy document says Greenstone is not a party to the contract and does not guarantee Pinnacle's obligations (NZ Seniors: Policy Document, 23 May 2021). Our explainer on who owns NZ Seniors has the ownership detail.
A.M. Best rates Pinnacle Life B+ (Good), affirmed on 15 April 2026. Pinnacle's own disclosure shows a solvency ratio of 112.6% at 30 June 2026 (Pinnacle Life: financial strength). A rating is an opinion of an insurer's ability to meet its obligations, not a recommendation to buy. See also our note on Pinnacle's B+ rating.
The limits and waiting periods
These are the terms that decide a claim. They come from the policy document read on 20 October 2026.
| Term | What the policy document says |
|---|---|
| Who can apply | Aged 18 to 79 and a New Zealand resident, on a single or joint plan |
| Benefit | A chosen amount up to $30,000 across all NZ Seniors funeral policies on one life |
| First 12 months | Only accidental death pays (death within 90 days of an accident). No benefit for any other cause |
| Terminal illness | Paid if first diagnosed at least 12 months after the acceptance date; not paid if diagnosed in the first 12 months |
| After 12 months | The benefit is paid for death from any cause |
| Accidental death | The funeral benefit plus an Accidental Death Benefit of twice that amount, so three times in total |
| Premiums | Level, calculated from age at the start, benefit and plan; they stop at the 85th birthday |
| At 85 | 25% Bonus Cover is added at no extra premium; an Early Cash Out Option pays 75% of the pre-85 benefit and ends the cover |
| Rate changes | Pinnacle may raise rates only for all (or the same group of) policyholders, with at least 90 days' written notice |
| Cancelling | A full refund inside 30 days if no claim has been made; after that nothing comes back, except a pro rata refund if you paid annually |
The 12-month rule is shorter than Momentum Life's 24 months, but it works differently. At NZ Seniors a death from illness in the first 12 months pays nothing and no premiums come back. At Momentum all premiums for that person are refunded.
What independent sources say
Consumer NZ. Its page, updated 22 May 2024, says its research found funeral insurance in general to be poor value for money. On quotes for $10,000 of cover for a 64-year-old, it calculated that you could pay 10% to 100% more than the policy was worth by age 84 (Consumer NZ: 5 ways to pay for your funeral). That is a finding about the product type, not about NZ Seniors alone.
1News Fair Go, 4 December 2025. The programme reported on an NZ Seniors customer who took out a policy at 78, paying $110 a fortnight for $12,000. Premiums continue to 85, and the story calculates about $20,000 paid for a $12,000 benefit. It also describes six months of attempts to cancel, during which the insurer repeatedly phoned the customer to keep the policy, and a $300 goodwill refund after a formal complaint. NZ Seniors told 1News its calls are "a safeguard to ensure we act on the wishes of the insured party" and that the product is "not a savings product, but a protection product" (1News). This is one customer's account with the company's reply. It does not show how common the experience is.
IFSO, 11 December 2025. The Ombudsman said insurers should warn that you may pay more than you get back, in the policy, on the website and in any advertising, and that without such a warning it is likely to uphold a complaint. Its examples included a claim declined inside a 12-month accidental-only window (IFSO: funeral insurance, what consumers need to know). The release does not name NZ Seniors.
NZ Seniors does give the warning. Its policy document lists the risk that "you will pay more in total premiums than the value of the cover, depending on how long you hold cover for".
Are the premiums stepped?
No. The funeral policy uses level premiums, so the amount is designed to stay the same from year to year. It is set from your age when the cover starts, so someone who starts at 78 pays a higher level premium than someone who starts at 65, for fewer years. The premium can still change if you change the benefit, or if Pinnacle raises rates for the whole group on 90 days' notice.
The stepped design belongs to a different product. NZ Seniors Life, which asks health questions and is not guaranteed acceptance, uses premiums that rise each year (NZ Seniors: Life policy document). Do not mix the two when you read reviews.
Testing the value yourself
NZ Seniors publishes no price, so we cannot give you one. You can test any quote with simple arithmetic. Multiply the fortnightly premium by 26 for a yearly figure, multiply by the years until 85, and compare the result with the benefit.
The numbers below are round and labelled. They are an illustration, not an NZ Seniors price.
| Start age | Years of premiums to 85 | Total at $50 a fortnight ($1,300 a year) | Against a $10,000 benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | 15 | $19,500 | Total is nearly double the benefit |
| 75 | 10 | $13,000 | Total is 30% above the benefit |
| 80 | 5 | $6,500 | Total is below the benefit |
At $1,300 a year, premiums reach $10,000 after about 7.7 years. If death comes sooner, and at least 12 months after the start, the benefit is larger than what was paid. If it comes later, it is smaller, although the 25% Bonus Cover after 85 lifts a $10,000 benefit to $12,500. The 1News example fits the same method: $110 a fortnight is $2,860 a year, and seven years to 85 is about $20,000.

How it compares with Momentum Life
Compared: NZ Seniors and Momentum Life Funeral Insurance, on the facts below, as at 20 October 2026, from each insurer's policy document and rating pages. Not every New Zealand insurer is included. This is a reading of documents, not a score.
| NZ Seniors | Momentum Life Funeral Insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| Insurer | Pinnacle Life Limited | Momentum Life Limited |
| A.M. Best rating | B+ (Good) | B (Fair) |
| Entry ages | 18 to 79 | 40 to 75 |
| Benefit | Up to $30,000 | $3,000 to $30,000 |
| Only accidental death pays | First 12 months | First 24 months |
| Premiums refunded for another cause in that window | No | Yes, all |
| Premiums stop | 85th birthday | 89th birthday |
| Terminal illness benefit | Yes, after 12 months | None |
| Rate change notice | 90 days | 30 days |
Momentum Life Limited's financial strength rating is B (Fair) from A.M. Best, affirmed on 11 February 2026. Momentum's own table places B in its "Vulnerable" range, and its disclosure shows solvency of 107% at 30 June 2026 (Momentum: financial strength). Pinnacle's grade is higher on the same agency's scale. Neither grade is a recommendation. Momentum's side of the table is in the Funeral Cover plan page, and a fuller comparison is in Momentum vs NZ Seniors.
The total premiums on any funeral policy, Momentum's included, can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. FDANZ's 2026 report gives an average of $11,700 for a cremation funeral for 50 guests and $14,300 for a burial (FDANZ).
What we could not verify
- Any NZ Seniors premium. It publishes none.
- How many NZ Seniors claims are paid or declined. We found no such figure published.
- The NZ Seniors review scores on its own pages, which are self-published.
- How common cancellation difficulty is. We have one reported case and the company's reply.
Who it may suit
The age range is the main reason people consider it. Cover is open at 76 to 79, where Momentum's Funeral Insurance does not accept new applicants, and from 18, where Momentum's starts at 40. The terminal illness benefit is another difference. Against that, the cost over a long life is the figure to test first.
If you can answer health questions, fully underwritten life cover through a licensed adviser may offer more for less. Savings, a prepaid plan and the Work and Income Funeral Grant (up to $2,697.43, with tests, and prepaid funeral cover can affect it) are other routes (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). For a complaint about an NZ Seniors policy, go to NZ Seniors first and then IFSO, of which Pinnacle Life is a member (0800 888 202).

Adviser's view
NZ Seniors funeral insurance accepts people aged 18 to 79, which few rivals do, and it pays a terminal illness benefit. The trade-offs are a 12-month window in which only accidental death pays, with no premium refund, and premiums that run to 85 and can add up to more than the benefit. Test the total before you sign, and compare it with saving the same money.
