Nelson council cemetery and crematorium fees

Nelson City Council charges $3,315 for an adult burial plot and $1,445 for an adult burial, which is $4,760 for a weekday burial by a resident. Cremation at the council's Wakapuaka crematorium costs $1,120.80 for an adult. These are the 2026/27 fees, GST included, and they are reviewed each 1 July (Nelson City Council: fees and charges, read 20 October 2026). They are council charges only, not the cost of a funeral.

What the council runs

Nelson City Council administers four active cemeteries: Hira, Marsden, Seaview and Wakapuaka. It owns the crematorium at Wakapuaka and contracts its operation to Green by Nature; the site has two cremators and a chapel (Nelson City Council: about cemeteries, Nelson City Council: cremations). That makes Nelson different from councils that only supply burial plots: the cremation fee below is the council's own.

The council says its charges cover the exclusive right of burial, digging and filling the grave, checking that a headstone or plaque meets maintenance requirements, and a share of upkeep. Most people pay through the funeral director, and the council says the full cost of running the cemeteries is subsidised from rates. Plot fees are invoiced before the certificate of purchase is issued; interment and cremation fees are invoiced afterwards.

Burial plots and interments

Item 2026/27 fee
Adult plot (over 12) $3,315.00
Adult burial $1,445.00
Child plot (1 to 12) $1,807.00
Child burial $827.00
Infant plot (under 1, including stillborn) No charge
Infant burial $400.00
Disinterment $4,020.00
Reinterment $1,706.00

A weekday adult burial by a resident is therefore $3,315 + $1,445 = $4,760 (our sum). The Funeral Directors Association of NZ (FDANZ) put Nelson at $4,622 for July 2025 (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). The 2026/27 sum is $138 higher, though FDANZ's method may differ from ours.

Ashes

Item 2026/27 fee
Lawn ash plot (up to 4 urns) $901.50
Standard ash plot (up to 2 urns) $1,007.00
Family ash plot (up to 4 urns) $1,326.00
Family ash plot (up to 8 urns) $1,807.00
Plaque-only plot (memorial kerb only) $381.00
Ash interment $312.00
Ash interment, double $413.50
Ash disinterment $295.80

Cremation and the chapel

Item 2026/27 fee
Adult cremation $1,120.80
Child cremation $898.20
Infant cremation No charge
Oversized casket cremation $1,459.10
Saturday or out of hours, adult (additional) $217.50
Saturday or out of hours, child (additional) $111.30
Chapel hire, committal (up to 30 minutes) $104.80
Chapel hire, service (30 minutes to 2 hours) $518.50

The $217.50 line is printed without a dollar sign on the council page; we have read it as a dollar amount. FDANZ's indicative range for a council cremation fee is $600 to $1,100 (FDANZ: financial matters) and its 2025 average across 23 councils is $920 (FDANZ: council costs PDF), so Nelson sits just above that range. The council lists chapel hire separately from the cremation fee. A funeral director's professional fee, a casket, and the doctor's and medical referee's paperwork fees are further costs. For direct cremation prices see direct cremation costs.

Non-resident, weekend and public holiday charges

Extra charge (added to the fee above) 2026/27
Out of district purchase, non-Nelson resident, burial plot $2,312.00
Out of district purchase, non-Nelson resident, ash plot $805.00
Weekend burial $351.00
Weekend ash interment $305.50
Public holiday burial $905.90
Public holiday ash interment $395.50
Out of hours $399.00 an hour
Plaque installation application review $121.00

A non-resident adult burial plot is $3,315 + $2,312 = $5,627 before the $1,445 burial fee, which makes $7,072 in all (our sum). The council's table says "Non-Nelson resident" and does not say whether that means the person who died or the buyer of the plot, so ask the cemetery office which applies if the person lived elsewhere.

The council page also says no interments or cremations can take place on public holidays, and the cemeteries page says funeral services are closed on public holidays unless exceptional circumstances apply. The fee table still lists a public holiday charge, so ask the cemetery office whether one is possible. Weekend and out-of-hours interments are with operator approval only; no burials take place on Sundays, though ash interments are allowed. Interments run Monday to Friday 10:00am to 3:30pm and on weekends 10:00am to 2:00pm.

What a Nelson funeral costs beyond council fees

We have not found a published Nelson funeral director price list, so this page does not give a "Nelson funeral cost". The nearest national benchmarks are FDANZ's 2025 survey scenarios for a full funeral with 50 attendees: an average of $11,700 for cremation (range $10,000 to $13,900) and $14,300 for burial (range $12,800 to $17,000), and $4,700 for an unattended cremation (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). These are national averages from member homes, not Nelson prices. The Nelson council stack of $4,760 is about a third of the burial average, which shows how much of a bill can sit outside council fees. Our funeral director price lists page collects published lists, and the funeral cost guide breaks the bill down item by item.

Arranging services with the council

A burial, ash interment or ash scattering needs a Warrant of Interment, usually arranged by the funeral director, although ash interments and scattering may also be organised privately. Anyone arranging a cremation themselves works with the council's Cremation Registrar: Form A (application for cremation), medical certificates, then the medical referee's Form F permission to cremate. The council's number is 03 546 0200. The cemeteries page covers the steps, and a funeral director, solicitor or Citizens Advice Bureau can help with the forms (Nelson City Council: cremations). For other regions, compare Auckland and Tauranga fees, or look at natural burial costs. Nelson's Marsden Valley ground is on Natural Burials NZ's certified list.

Help with the bill

The Work and Income Funeral Grant has a maximum of $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026 and is subject to income and asset tests, and ACC can pay up to $8,236.40 after a death from a covered injury (Work and Income: Funeral Grant, ACC: financial support after a death). Our guides cover the funeral grant and ways to pay for a funeral.

If you are planning ahead for your own funeral, one option is Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited. It accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. For the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death (death within 90 days of the accident), and total premiums can end up larger than the benefit. Momentum Life is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best (Momentum Life: financial strength). The buttons on this page open Momentum's online application. Back to the funeral costs hub.

Adviser's view

Nelson's council fees are the easy part of a Nelson funeral to price, because the schedule is published and dated. For a resident adult burial they come to $4,760 on a weekday, and a non-Nelson resident pays $2,312 more for a burial plot. They are not the cost of the funeral: the director, casket and service are extra, and we have not found a published Nelson funeral director price list.
