Dunedin council cemetery and crematorium fees

Dunedin City Council charges $6,082.40 to bury an adult at one of its 14 main cemeteries in 2026/27: burial rights of $2,863.40, an interment fee of $2,061.10 and a one-off service fee of $1,157.90. Its crematorium charges $1,182.20 for an adult cremation on a weekday. These are council fees only. They do not include a funeral director, casket, headstone or any service.

The council page we read is dated 23 June 2026 and covers the 2026/27 year; council fees reset each 1 July. Burial rights are the right to a plot, interment is the cost of the burial itself, and the service fee is a separate one-off charge that the council sets alongside the other two. Council fees may reach a family as part of a funeral director's invoice or be paid to the council directly, so ask whether they appear as separate lines. FDANZ's July 2025 figure for a Dunedin council burial was $5,877 (FDANZ, 2026 Industry Trends Report). The 2026/27 total is about 3.5% higher, our arithmetic, though FDANZ's method may differ from ours.

Burial fees at Dunedin's cemeteries

All amounts are for an adult burial (the page prints no separate weekend burial rate), include GST and come from the council's burial and related fees page, read on 20 October 2026 (Dunedin City Council: burial and related fees).

Item 14 main cemeteries Five rural cemeteries
Burial rights $2,863.40 $968.00
Interment $2,061.10 $2,061.10
One-off service fee $1,157.90 $968.00
Total (our sum) $6,082.40 $3,997.10

The 14 main cemeteries include Green Park and Andersons Bay. For children under 10 the council lists burial rights of $1,440.10 and interment of $1,395.80. Green Park also has a natural burial site, where burial rights are $2,863.40 and the page prints no separate interment line. For other natural burial options and their rules, see natural burial costs.

The rural total is lower mainly because rights and the service fee are cheaper. The interment fee is the same at both. A family who is choosing between cemeteries should ask for the plot, the interment and the service fee as three separate numbers, because a quote that lists only "burial fee" may leave one out.

Ashes, plots and permits

The ash fees are on the council's crematorium fees page; the monumental permit is on the burial page.

Item Fee
Family ash plot $683.90
Service fee on an ash plot $293.80
Ash interment $216.70
Monumental permit $105.10

Adding the ash plot, its service fee and one interment gives $1,194.40, our sum. FDANZ's 2025 council-cost table shows an average ash burial of $1,317 across its sample and $870 for Dunedin, so the methods differ (FDANZ: council costs). The monumental permit is the council's charge for memorial work; the memorial itself is a separate purchase, covered in headstone prices in NZ.

Crematorium fees

The council runs a crematorium. All fees are from the council's crematorium fees page (Dunedin City Council: crematorium fees).

Item Fee
Crematorium fee (adult) $1,182.20
Child under 10 $209.40
Adult cremation, Saturday or public holiday $1,419.30
Chapel, per hour, weekdays $233.70
Chapel, per hour, Saturdays and public holidays $338.80

The cremation fee is only one part of a cremation. A direct cremation also needs a director's professional fee, a casket and medical paperwork; see direct cremation costs. One provider publishes a Dunedin price of $3,200 for a direct cremation (Value Cremations NZ, page undated, read 20 October 2026). Its page does not say whether the council's cremation fee is inside that figure, so ask.

If the estate cannot pay

The council "may waive cremation fees for an indigent person". The application has to be made at least 48 hours before the cremation and approved by a Justice of the Peace. Under section 49 of the Burial and Cremation Act 1964 a council that runs a cemetery or crematorium may, and on a Justice's order shall, bury or cremate a poor person free of charge where the deceased left too little and relatives cannot pay (legislation.govt.nz). FDANZ reports that some councils still ask funeral homes to apply to Work and Income first.

The Work and Income Funeral Grant pays up to $2,697.43, and burial costs including the plot and interment are named as reasonable expenses along with cremation fees (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). It is tested on income and assets. Against Dunedin's $6,082.40 burial total, the maximum grant is a little under half, before the funeral director's fees. See the Funeral Grant guide.

What these fees do not include

We have no Dunedin funeral director price list in hand, so this page does not estimate a Dunedin funeral total. FDANZ's national figures are $11,700 for a full funeral with cremation and $14,300 with burial, for a scenario with 50 attendees; they are not Dunedin-specific. For the national picture, see what a funeral costs in New Zealand and burial costs.

How Dunedin compares with other councils

Councils bundle their fees differently, so totals are not strictly comparable. These are the sums from the fee pages we read.

Council Adult burial total How it is built Fee year
Christchurch $3,460 Plot $2,071 plus interment $1,389 2026/27
Nelson $4,760 Plot $3,315 plus burial $1,445 2026/27
Dunedin $6,082.40 Rights, interment and one-off service fee 2026/27
Auckland (Manukau) $6,770 Right $5,360 plus burial $1,410 Page undated
Tauranga (Pyes Pā) $8,426 Plot with perpetual maintenance and permit $6,388 plus burial $2,038 2026/27

Funeral insurance as one way to plan ahead

With a council burial total above $6,000 before any director's fee, some Dunedin families look at ways to set money aside. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, is one: it accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. Acceptance does not depend on health questions, but for the first 24 months only accidental death (within 90 days of the accident) is paid; for any other death in that window, premiums are refunded. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover a whole funeral. Momentum Life's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), as set out on its financial strength page. The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application; our Funeral Cover page has the detail. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and may be paid a commission (how we are paid). Adviser's view

Dunedin's council fees are a floor, not a funeral price. A main-cemetery burial adds up to $6,082.40 before any funeral director, casket or headstone, and the council's one-off service fee is easy to miss. Get the director's quote to show council fees as a separate line.
