Christchurch funeral and cremation costs

In Christchurch a direct cremation costs from $4,215 on Simplicity Funerals' published plans, and a funeral with a chapel service from $10,000. The council's cemetery fees add $3,460 for an adult burial. For comparison, FDANZ's national average is $11,700 for a full funeral with cremation, $14,300 with burial, and $4,700 for an unattended cremation (2025 survey of its member homes).
We have not surveyed Christchurch funeral directors. This page uses what could be read from published sources: one funeral director's plan page, the council's 2026/27 cemetery schedule, and FDANZ's national report. Only Simplicity's Christchurch branch published prices we could use, and its plan page is undated (its footer shows 2026). A plan price here is a "from" price including GST, so treat each figure as a starting point. Other Christchurch directors may charge less or more, and we have not compared them.
Simplicity Funerals' Christchurch plans
All plans include "all legal documentation" and a high standard of care, according to the page (Simplicity Funerals Christchurch).

Every priced plan includes the cremation fee, and all except Simply Dignified mention a burial option at additional cost. Flowers, newspaper notices and catering are extra on the larger plans. Simplicity's $4,215 includes the cremation fee, casket and certificate, so it is not like for like with a price that lists only a professional fee.
What the national figures add
FDANZ's 2026 report puts an unattended cremation at an average of $4,700 and a full funeral with 50 guests at $11,700 (cremation) or $14,300 (burial) (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). Those are national averages, not Christchurch ones. They are in the same range as Simplicity's lowest plan ($4,215) and its $10,000 chapel plan. A national provider, Value Cremations NZ, listed a Christchurch direct cremation at $2,150 on 9 September 2026 (Value Cremations NZ); we have not checked what it includes. Council cemetery fees in Christchurch
Christchurch City Council's 2026/27 schedule, GST inclusive: a full-size plot $2,071, an adult interment $1,389, a total of $3,460; an ash plot $598 and ash interment $277; Saturday or public-holiday burial an additional $846. The full list is on our Christchurch council fees page. By comparison, Auckland Council's main cemeteries total $6,770 for plot and interment, and FDANZ's July 2025 sample put Christchurch at $3,356. The council requires fees to be paid in full before a burial and offers no payment plans (Christchurch City Council).
Crematoria in Christchurch
The council says all Christchurch crematoria are privately owned and names three: Christchurch Crematorium Funerals (Wigram), Canterbury Crematorium and Woodlawn Memorial Gardens and Crematorium (Linwood Avenue), and Harewood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium (Christchurch City Council). Simplicity's plans mention the Canterbury and Harewood crematoria. We did not find published fee schedules for any of the three, so the cremation fee is not shown separately here. The FDANZ national range for a council cremation fee is $600 to $1,100, but that is a council figure and Christchurch has no council crematorium, so do not read it as a Christchurch price. Ashes are available from the crematorium within 2 working days of a cremation on Simplicity's plans.
Water cremation
FDANZ says water cremation, also called aquamation, "is currently available in Christchurch" (FDANZ: Burial or cremation), and Work and Income counts water cremation among reasonable cremation costs. We found no consumer price. Our water cremation cost page has more.
Funeral at home, on a marae or in a hall
Tangihanga and other funerals do not have to be in a chapel. For Māori whānau, FDANZ says a viewing is almost always required and tangihanga are largely organised by the local marae. The council describes provisions for Māori burials, such as choosing a plot, facing a headstone north and having water at the cemetery. Customs vary by iwi and hapū, so talk to the marae or whānau first. See our guide to funeral costs for tangihanga.
Help paying in Christchurch
- Work and Income Funeral Grant: up to $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026, with income and asset tests in some cases (Work and Income). See our Funeral Grant guide.
- ACC: up to $8,236.40 where a covered injury caused the death (ACC).
- Veterans' Affairs: possible help for eligible veterans.
- Christchurch Mayor's Welfare Grant: for residents, assessed case by case, if other help has been tried, according to Simplicity's page.
The grant is far below the cost of most plans: $2,697.43 is about 64% of the $4,215 direct cremation plan and about 27% of the $10,000 plan, by our arithmetic. Ask the director how and when they expect to be paid before relying on a grant.
Planning ahead
Funeral insurance is one way to plan. It pays a fixed benefit towards the cost, not the whole bill. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months, and refunds the premiums if the person dies of something else in that time.
