Cremation urns in New Zealand: choices and prices
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
An urn for ashes in New Zealand costs about $50 to $500 on the Funeral Directors Association's indicative ranges, and $95 to $1,500 on one Auckland funeral director's May 2026 price list. Wellington City Council sells a wooden adult urn for $177. You do not need an urn on the day: the crematorium hands the ashes over in a simple container, so there is time to choose.
A cremation urn is a container that holds cremated remains, commonly called ashes. After a cremation the ashes are cremulated, which means broken up, and placed in a simple container, usually plastic, about 30 centimetres long and 15 centimetres deep (FDANZ: Burial or cremation). Families then keep that container, move the ashes into an urn they like, bury them in a cemetery, scatter them, or split them between more than one place. An urn is therefore a choice, not a legal step in a cremation. This page sets out what urns cost where a price is published, what the crematorium gives you, what councils charge for the places ashes go, and the limits on carrying ashes by air or post.
What the crematorium gives you
Ashes come back in the container described above. Timing and collection vary by provider. Simplicity Funerals in Christchurch says ashes are available from the crematorium within 2 working days of a cremation on its plans (Simplicity Funerals Christchurch). Some councils charge for out-of-hours collection:
- North Shore Memorial Park (Auckland Council): collecting ashes after hours $410; on a Sunday or public holiday $1,235 (Auckland Council: cemetery fees).
- Wellington City Council's Karori Crematorium: express ash (weekend collection) $239 (Wellington City Council: cremation fees).
If you are not in a hurry, a weekday collection avoids those charges. Your funeral director may be able to collect the ashes for you; ask whether that is in the quote.
What urns cost
No single national price list exists. These are the published figures we found, with their dates.

| FDANZ, indicative costs | $50 to $500 | Ranges "as at July 2025"; vary by funeral director |
| Dils (North Shore, Auckland) | $95 to $1,500 | Standard price list as at May 2026, GST inclusive, "may alter at anytime without notice" |
| Wellington City Council | Wooden urn, adult $177; half size $132 | Council page published 12 June 2026 |
| Auckland Council crematoria | Additional small urn $20; additional large urn $30 | Listed as additional cremation fees at Waikumete, North Shore and Manukau; the page does not say what size or material, and prints no fee year |

We did not find a New Zealand source that prices urns by material, so this page does not quote ranges for ceramic, brass, stone or biodegradable urns. If a quote lists one, ask what it is made of, its size and whether it is included in a package or charged separately. Dils lists ash urns as their own line, and Simplicity's Christchurch plans list a casket, cremation fee and death certificate but no urn (Simplicity).
Choosing a size
Take the temporary container's contents as the amount an urn must hold. We found no sourced volume for an adult's ashes, so ask the crematorium or funeral director rather than rely on a figure from a retailer's page. If you plan to divide the ashes, you need more than one container. Auckland Council's crematoria charge $52 for ash separation, and FDANZ notes that some people split ashes and place a portion in one location and the rest somewhere else.
Keepsakes and jewellery
Dividing ashes is also how a small portion ends up in a keepsake or piece of jewellery. We found no sourced New Zealand price for ashes jewellery, so we give none. Ask the funeral director whether the crematorium will separate a portion before the rest is placed in an urn, and agree who holds the remainder.
Where ashes can go, and what it costs
The urn is often cheaper than the place it ends up. Council fees for ashes, as published on 20 October 2026:
| Council | Ash plot or right | Burying ashes | Scattering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland (lawn ash areas) | From $1,650 | $390 | $105 |
| Wellington | Niche placement $197 | $198 | $88 ($50 non-resident) |
| Christchurch | Ash plot $598 | Interment $277 | Not listed |
Auckland's charges are at its three main crematorium sites; satellite cemeteries differ (see the Auckland Council fees page). Christchurch's figures are 2026/27 (Christchurch City Council: cemetery fees) and Wellington's are on its council fees page. A Christchurch ash plot takes the ashes of two or four people, depending on the cemetery, though only one headstone or plaque is allowed per plot (Christchurch City Council: purchasing a plot). Auckland lists some ash areas by the number of urns they hold, from 2 to 16.
Rules for keeping, burying and scattering
- Keeping at home. FDANZ lists keeping ashes at home in special-purpose urns as one of the options. We found no rule against it.
- Cemeteries. Ashes can be buried in a cemetery or in special ashes memorial areas. Christchurch says all ashes interments must be arranged through its Cemeteries Administrator.
- Scattering. Auckland Council asks you to respect cultural practices and to avoid places that are sacred or significant. For its sites it lists maunga, areas used for food gathering, its regional parks, local parks and sports fields, waterways and oceans, and private property without the owner's permission as prohibited areas, and asks you to complete an application form (Auckland Council: scattering of ashes). FDANZ also asks families to avoid traditional Māori food-gathering grounds.
- Other land. We found no national rule for scattering on other land. Ask the landowner or the council that manages it before you go.
Taking ashes on a flight or posting them
FDANZ says that when repatriating ashes you may carry them yourself as a carry-on item, as long as you have the correct documentation. It says NZ Post will not accept ashes from the general public, and that sending them between funeral directors is the recommended way to send them by courier or mail (FDANZ: Repatriation). Overseas rules also depend on the countries and airline involved. We could not read an airline's current ashes policy, so check with your airline and the destination's authorities before you travel, and keep the crematorium's paperwork with you.
Do you have to buy from the funeral home?
Nothing in the sources we read requires it. Urns are an optional line in FDANZ's and Dils's lists, a council such as Wellington sells its own, and Community Law says families do not have to hand the arrangements to a funeral director (Community Law: Funerals and tangihanga). Compare a written price with one from a retailer before you decide.
Help with the cost
Work and Income's Funeral Grant is up to $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026, and its list of reasonable expenses does not name an urn, so ask before you rely on it (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). See our Funeral Grant guide.
Some people also plan ahead with funeral insurance. It pays a fixed benefit towards costs, not the whole bill. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, and for the first 24 months pays only for accidental death; premiums over a long life can add up to more than the benefit. Momentum Life is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best (Momentum Life: financial strength). Our funeral insurance explainer covers the options, and the buttons on this page open Momentum's online application. Adviser's view
An urn is one of the smaller and more optional lines in a funeral bill. The crematorium returns the ashes in a simple container, so an urn need not be bought before the cremation, and the larger costs sit in where the ashes finally go: a plot, a niche or a scattering fee. Published prices by material are thin, so ask for a written price before you buy.
