A direct cremation is a cremation with no funeral service and no mourners at the cremation. The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) puts the average unattended cremation at $4,700, against $11,700 for a full funeral with cremation (FDANZ, 2026 Industry Trends Report). Three published price lists we read range from $1,945 to $4,215, and they are not like for like.

Direct cremation is also called an unattended, no-service or simple cremation, though firms use the words differently. The body is collected, the paperwork is completed, the cremation takes place without the family present, and the ashes are returned afterwards. The price you are quoted may cover only the funeral director's professional fee, or it may include the crematorium fee, a basic casket and a death certificate. That difference, not the headline number, is why two quotes of $3,030 and $4,215 can describe nearly the same service. Extra costs that sit outside a basic package include a viewing, a celebrant, a venue, flowers, notices and any memorial gathering. Work and Income's Funeral Grant of up to $2,697.43 can help with a direct cremation, within its income and asset tests.

What a direct cremation is, and what it is not

FDANZ's 2026 report counts the unattended cremation as one of its funeral types. It gives two shares for 2025 on different pages, 17% and 23%, so we do not quote a single figure. FDANZ puts 60% of 2025 funerals as full funerals, and the other 40% as a private or family goodbye plus unattended cremations.

The words matter when you compare prices. One Auckland director's list separates a "direct cremation" with no service or viewing ($3,030) from a "simple cremation" with a family viewing or gathering ($3,470), a difference of $440 (Dils, standard price list as at May 2026). A different firm may use "simple" for what Dils calls "direct".

What three published prices cover

These are published prices, dated where the source gives a date. We are not ranking providers, and the table is not a directory.

Source Published price What the source says it is Date
Value Cremations NZ $1,945 (Auckland) to $3,400 (Hawke's Bay) by region "The core arrangements needed for a direct cremation": paperwork, transport, the cremation with a coffin or burial shroud, and ashes returned; external fees such as doctor's certificates are billed separately; distance, after-hours collection or specific requirements can add cost No date on the page (copyright line 2023 to 2026), read 20 October 2026
Dils (North Shore, Auckland) $3,030 Professional service fee only, for direct cremation with no service or viewing Price list as at May 2026
Simplicity Funerals, Christchurch From $4,215 "Dignified" plan: direct cremation, no embalming, basic casket, death certificate Page undated (footer 2026)

(Value Cremations NZ; Simplicity Funerals Christchurch.) Value Cremations' page does not itemise what is inside its price, and it does not mention viewing. The Dils figure is a fee for the director's work. Its crematorium, documentation and casket lines are separate.

Costs that sit outside a basic package

On the Dils list, the lines that sit on top of the $3,030 professional fee include:

Adding $3,030, the lowest Schnapper Rock fee ($1,065) and the lowest documentation line ($80) gives $4,175 before any casket. That is our arithmetic from one list, not a quote, but it shows why $3,030 is not the cost of the cremation. FDANZ's $4,700 average sits in the same area.

What a basic package usually leaves out

In the two director lists we read, these are separate lines or extras, not part of the direct cremation fee:

Not in the basic fee Where it is priced Example
Family viewing or gathering Dils Simple cremation $3,470 instead of $3,030
One-hour viewing for 10 people Simplicity "Personal" plan from $5,265
Celebrant or minister Dils; FDANZ $590 to $705; $300 to $900
Venue or chapel Dils; FDANZ Chapel $662; $200 to $500
Flowers Dils; FDANZ Casket spray $470; $200 to $500
Newspaper notice Dils; FDANZ $300; $150 to $500 or more
Catering Dils; FDANZ $15 to $19.45 a head; $15 to $25 a head
Urn Dils; FDANZ $95 to $1,500; $50 to $500

Simplicity says flowers, notices and catering are extra on its plans. For costs of a later gathering, see funeral venue hire and catering and urns in NZ.

The paperwork and the casket

A cremation needs a cause-of-death certificate or coroner's order, Form A signed by the executor or a near relative, Form B (or the newer Form BA) from a doctor or nurse practitioner, and the medical referee's permission to cremate (Health NZ: Cremation). A funeral director normally handles this, which is part of the professional fee.

Auckland Council says a body is cremated in a casket, or a shroud on a bearer, that is all combustible. Batteries, pacemakers, glass and PVC are prohibited items, and a casket can be held refrigerated for up to 48 hours (Auckland Council: how cremation works). FDANZ says a cremation takes two to four hours and the ashes are returned in a simple plastic container about 30 centimetres long (FDANZ: burial or cremation).

Viewing, ashes and a later service

Whether a family can see the person before an unattended cremation depends on the provider. On the Dils list the "direct" option excludes a viewing and the "simple" option adds a family viewing, so ask. Value Cremations' page is silent on viewing.

A direct cremation does not rule out a later memorial. Dils lists a memorial service as its own professional-fee option ($3,470). FDANZ says ashes can be kept in an urn, placed in a family plot or memorial garden, scattered at sea or in a favourite place, and asks families to take care near traditional Māori food-gathering grounds. Auckland Council prohibits scattering in waterways and oceans on its land and says it is culturally inappropriate for Māori (Auckland Council: scattering of ashes).

When a direct cremation may not suit a family

The executor decides, or the closest relative where there is no executor, taking whānau views and cultural, religious and spiritual practice into account (Community Law: funerals and tangihanga). FDANZ reports that for Māori whānau a viewing is almost always required, and that for Māori, Pacific peoples and the growing number of Asian New Zealanders a more traditional funeral or tangihanga remains the norm. Pacific peoples had the lowest cremation rate in 2025 (21%). See tangihanga costs. Religious belief can also decide timing. Where customs differ, a funeral director and the community's own organisations are the right source, not a price page.

Paying for a direct cremation

The Work and Income Funeral Grant pays up to $2,697.43 (page updated 24 June 2026) when the person was your partner, parent or guardian, your child under 18, or a single person over 18 whose funeral you arrange, subject to tests on income (for a partner or child) and assets. Cremation fees are named as a reasonable expense (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). The maximum is about 57% of FDANZ's $4,700 average, our arithmetic. Prepaid funeral cover can affect eligibility. ACC pays up to $8,236.40 towards funeral and memorial costs where the death was from a covered injury. See the Funeral Grant guide and cremation costs and council fees.

Planning ahead with funeral insurance

Some people who prefer a simple farewell still want a fixed sum set aside for it. Funeral insurance is a fixed benefit towards costs, not payment of a bill, and it would not change what a direct cremation costs. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, asks no health questions and offers benefits of $3,000 to $30,000. In the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death (within 90 days of the accident); for any other death in that window nothing is paid and the premiums are refunded. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. Momentum Life holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair); see its financial strength page. Details are on our Funeral Cover page and in the funeral insurance hub. The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a Momentum policy (how we are paid). Adviser's view

A direct cremation costs far less than a full funeral on FDANZ's averages ($4,700 against $11,700), but the headline price is rarely the whole bill: the crematorium fee, medical paperwork and a casket can sit outside it. Ask each provider for the total, in writing, for the same scenario before you compare.
