Hamilton City Council's cemetery fee page lists $4,560 for an adult burial plot and $905 for the burial at Hamilton Park Cemetery, which adds up to $5,465, plus $715 for an adult cremation. That page says it was last updated on 5 July 2022. FDANZ's 2025 figures for Hamilton differ, so these are not confirmed 2026 fees.

Council cemetery fees are what a council charges for a plot, the burial itself, a cremation, ashes and permits. They do not include a funeral director, a casket, transport, a headstone or any service. They may reach a family as part of a funeral director's invoice or be paid to the council directly. The Hamilton page we read is the council's own fees and charges page for cemeteries (Hamilton City Council: cemetery fees), read on 20 October 2026. It names Hamilton Park Cemetery as the only cemetery it covers and does not state a financial year. Councils reset most fees each 1 July, so a page that has not been touched for four years should be checked by phone before you rely on it.

Surcharges and extras on the same page

We found no out-of-district or non-resident surcharge on the page. That does not mean none applies now. Ask.

Where the page does not match 2025 figures

FDANZ's 2026 report gave Hamilton's July 2025 council burial total as $5,315 on its sample method, which counts plot, interment and compulsory maintenance, taking the more modest plot where several are published (FDANZ, 2026 Industry Trends Report). The council page adds to $5,465, higher than the 2025 figure. FDANZ's council cost table gave Hamilton's 2025 cremation fee as $695, up 10% on 2024, while the council page lists $715 (FDANZ: council costs).

Two sources, two answers, and neither matches the other. Either the council page is out of date, the two use different bases, or fees were restructured after 2022. We cannot tell which, so we do not call either one current. This is also why we do not report a year-on-year change for Hamilton.

How to confirm Hamilton's current fees

  1. Ask the council for the 2026/27 cemetery schedule for Hamilton Park and the date it was published.
  2. Ask which fee applies: plot, burial, maintenance and any service fee, as separate lines.
  3. Ask if a surcharge applies for your day and time, and whether a non-resident charge exists.
  4. If you are using a director, ask for the council fees to be shown separately on the quote, so you can check them against the council's own schedule. See funeral director price lists.

Hamilton against other councils

Other councils publish dated 2026/27 or as-published schedules. Totals are not like for like because councils bundle differently, but they show the spread.

Council Adult burial total Fee year
Hamilton (Hamilton Park) $5,465 on the 2022 page; FDANZ July 2025: $5,315 Page updated 5 July 2022
Christchurch $3,460 2026/27
Nelson $4,760 2026/27
Dunedin $6,082.40 2026/27
Auckland (Manukau) $6,770 Page undated
Tauranga (Pyes Pā) $8,426, including perpetual maintenance and permit 2026/27

More are on the Auckland and Tauranga council fee pages. For a Hamilton cremation without a service, one provider publishes a Hamilton price of $2,395 for a direct cremation (Value Cremations NZ, page undated, read 20 October 2026). It does not say whether the council fee is inside it; see direct cremation costs.

Paying for it

The Work and Income Funeral Grant pays up to $2,697.43 and lists burial costs, including the plot and interment, and cremation fees among reasonable expenses. It is subject to income and asset tests, and prepaid funeral cover can affect eligibility (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). Other ways to pay are in paying for a funeral. The wider burial picture is in burial costs.

Planning ahead with funeral insurance

Because Hamilton's current schedule is unconfirmed, any figure you set aside should allow for it to differ. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. There are no health questions, but for the first 24 months only accidental death (within 90 days of the accident) is paid; for any other death in that window, premiums are refunded. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. Momentum Life's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair); see its financial strength page and our Funeral Cover page. The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application. Adviser's view

Treat Hamilton's published schedule as a guide to what is charged, not as this year's price. The council page is dated July 2022 and does not match FDANZ's 2025 numbers, so ask the council for the current 2026/27 schedule, in writing, before you budget.
