Auckland funeral and cremation costs

A funeral in Auckland costs whatever the director's price list and the council's fees add up to, and no single figure covers it. FDANZ's national survey puts a full funeral with cremation at an average of $11,700, with burial at $14,300, and an unattended cremation at $4,700. For Auckland itself, one North Shore director's May 2026 list and the council's published fees give the ranges below, which we have added up ourselves.

We have not run a price survey. Every figure here comes from a price list or schedule that a named organisation published, and each has a date. The director figures are from Dils, a North Shore funeral director whose standard price list is "as at May 2026", GST inclusive and "may alter at anytime without notice" (Dils price list). One director is not Auckland, so use this as a worked example and get written quotes from two or three.

Direct cremation in Auckland

A direct cremation has no service and no viewing. Dils lists a professional fee of $3,030 for it, and $3,470 for a simple cremation with a family viewing or gathering. The crematorium, the casket and the paperwork are separate lines on the list.

Dils line (May 2026) Amount
Professional fee, direct cremation $3,030
Transfer of the deceased (assuming one transfer) $470
Cremation fee (Schnapper Rock) $1,065 to $2,515
Medical documentation $80 to $450
Death certificate, per copy $38
Total before a casket (our arithmetic) $4,683 to $6,503

A casket is also needed (or a shroud on a bearer). Dils lists custom wood caskets from $1,705 to $5,895 and eco caskets from $3,055 to $5,435; it prints no cheaper option. Our casket price guide explains the choices. Dils does not say why its cremation fee ranges so widely. Auckland Council charges $750 for an adult cremation at its crematoria at Waikumete, North Shore and Manukau, so ask which crematorium a quote assumes.

A lower published Auckland price comes from a national provider. Value Cremations NZ listed a direct cremation in Auckland at $1,945 when we recorded it on 9 September 2026 (Value Cremations NZ). That is not like for like with Dils: we have not checked what either includes, so ask for the inclusions in writing. Our direct cremation page compares more providers.

A full funeral with cremation

FDANZ's scenario is a full funeral with 50 people at a funeral home, catering, a celebrant, a slideshow, service sheets and a mid-price casket. Its member homes averaged $11,700, with a range of $10,000 to $13,900 (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). Built line by line from the Dils list, the core of a full service looks like this:

Item Low High
Professional fee, full service $5,955 $5,955
Chapel hire (North Harbour Chapel) $662 $662
Celebrant or minister $590 $705
Hearse $492 $492
Transfer $470 $470
Care of the deceased for final presentation $705 $1,975
Casket (custom wood range) $1,705 $5,895
Cremation fee $1,065 $2,515
Medical documentation and one certificate $118 $488
Core total (our arithmetic) $11,762 $19,157

That total leaves out flowers, a newspaper notice (Dils lists the NZ Herald at $300), service sheets, a slideshow, webcasting, catering ($15 to $19.45 a head plus a venue fee of $512 to $795) and after-hours charges (a weekend or public-holiday funeral adds $760 to $1,530). A solid timber casket at Dils costs $5,035 to $14,800, so the high end can be higher still. Our funeral cost guide breaks down the national bill.

Burial in Auckland

Burial fees are set by the council, not the funeral director. At Auckland Council's main cemeteries an adult lawn plot is $5,360 and a single-depth burial $1,410, so $6,770 together; smaller satellite cemeteries are $3,300 plus $1,990, or $5,290 (Auckland Council, published 20 October 2026, no fee year printed). Dils lists plots including interment at North Shore Memorial Park at $5,200 to $9,900, a second interment in an existing plot at $1,500, and a "monumental requirements" line of $1,680 for burial.

FDANZ's July 2025 sample put the Auckland Council total at $6,570, against an average of $4,865 across 15 councils, with the highest at New Plymouth ($7,207). On those figures Auckland sits above the average. The full schedule, including children, ashes and out-of-hours fees, is on our Auckland Council fees page, and the wider picture is in the burial cost guide.

Headstones

The council charges $205 for a monumental permit. We did not find a mason's published price list, so we give no headstone price. Dils's $900 to $5,000 "monumental requirements" line for ashes and $1,680 for burial is the only figure we found, and it does not say what is included.

What drives the bill

Ways to bring it down

Ask for a written breakdown and compare like with like, as FDANZ suggests. A direct cremation followed by a memorial that the family organises avoids the chapel, hearse and mortuary lines. Some families choose a shroud on a bearer (Auckland Council allows this for cremation if all materials are combustible). FDANZ members are bound by a code to be open about costs; membership is not a legal requirement.

Help paying

Work and Income's Funeral Grant is up to $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026. By our arithmetic that is 23% of FDANZ's $11,700 cremation average and 57% of its $4,700 unattended cremation. ACC's funeral grant for deaths from a covered injury is up to $8,236.40. Grant tests, expenses and the effect of prepaid funeral cover are in our Funeral Grant guide. Both agencies' pages are in the references.

Funeral insurance is another way families prepare. It pays a fixed benefit towards the cost, not the bill itself. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance takes New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months; premiums paid over many years can add up to more than the benefit. Momentum Life is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best (financial strength). See what funeral insurance is; the buttons on this page open Momentum's online application. Back to funeral costs. Adviser's view

Auckland has no single price for a funeral. Putting one director's published list beside the council's fees gives roughly $4,700 to $6,500 before a casket for a direct cremation, and about $11,800 to $19,200 for a full service with cremation. The council's burial total is the part that does not move with the funeral director, so ask for it separately.
