A full funeral with a burial averages $14,300 in New Zealand, with a range of $12,800 to $17,000, against $11,700 for the same funeral with a cremation, according to the Funeral Directors Association of NZ's 2026 report (FDANZ, 2026 Industry Trends Report). The scenario is a funeral with 50 attendees, catering, a celebrant, a slideshow and a mid-price casket. The council's own charges for the grave averaged $4,865 across 15 councils in 2025, from $1,455 at Taupō to $7,207 at New Plymouth.
A burial cost is the sum of three separate bills: the funeral director's services, the casket and trimmings, and the cemetery's charges, which the council sets and usually collects. This page covers the whole bill. For the cemetery charges alone, compare councils in burial plot cost in NZ.
What a burial bill is made of
FDANZ publishes indicative ranges for the lines in a funeral, as at July 2025, and says they vary between funeral directors (FDANZ: Funeral costs and financial support). The ones that matter for a burial:
| Line | Indicative range (GST inclusive) | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Professional services fee | $3,000 to $6,500 | Funeral director |
| Preparation, for example embalming | $700 to $1,050 | Funeral director |
| Casket | $1,200 to $5,000 | Funeral director or supplier |
| Burial: plot plus interment | $1,000 to $8,000 | Cemetery (usually council) |
| Hearse | $200 to $450 | Funeral director |
| Celebrant or clergy | $300 to $900 | Celebrant |
| Flowers | $200 to $500 | Florist |
| Death certificate | $40 (Government fee is $35) | Government |
We have not added these up, because the top or bottom of each range need not apply to the same funeral. FDANZ's own scenario average of $14,300 is the better single guide. Our funeral cost guide goes through the other lines.
The council's part: where burials differ most
Cemetery charges have at least two parts. A fee for the burial right in a plot is paid once, and a separate interment fee covers opening and closing the grave. Some councils add a maintenance fee. Auckland and Dunedin call the first one a burial right, and their schedules list it apart from the interment fee. The schedules we read price a right, so read the council's terms on what the right covers and for how long.
To see the spread, here are two councils side by side, as read on 20 October 2026, adding each council's own lines for a weekday adult burial (the sums are ours). Wellington's Mākara is lower again at $2,754 as printed, with a beam and maintenance included:
| Council | Plot or right | Interment | Other | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christchurch (2026/27) | $2,071 | $1,389 | none listed | $3,460 |
| Tauranga, Pyes Pā (2026/27) | $6,388, includes maintenance | $2,038 | none | $8,426 |
The Tauranga total is more than twice Christchurch's (our sum). The bases differ, since Tauranga's plot price includes maintenance in perpetuity, so treat the gap as a guide to how much councils vary rather than a like-for-like comparison. The fee pages are the sources: Christchurch and Tauranga. Fees reset on 1 July, so check the current schedule. The plot cost guide sets out Nelson, Dunedin, Auckland and Wellington as well, with what each fee covers.
Charges that arrive on top of the quote
Three things can raise the council's bill after a first estimate: the day and time of the burial (Saturday, Sunday and public-holiday uplifts run, for example, from $351 at Nelson for a weekend to $2,060 at Auckland's Manukau for a public holiday, and Nelson has no Sunday burials), whether the person lived in the council's district (Nelson adds $2,312 to a burial plot for a non-resident, and Wellington lists its own out-of-district fees), and the headstone, which needs a council permit ($87 in Christchurch, $105.10 in Dunedin) before the stone itself is bought. We found no sourced price list for headstones; see headstones. Ask the director to show each of these as its own line.
Burial against cremation
Using FDANZ's figures, a funeral with a burial averages $2,600 more than one with a cremation ($14,300 less $11,700, our sum). An ash plot with interment adds about $1,300 to a cremation, FDANZ says, so a cremation followed by burying the ashes sits in between. In 2025 FDANZ found 69% of funerals were cremations and 25% were burials. For a side-by-side, see burial vs cremation and cremation costs.
Natural or green burial in a council ground can cost less than a lawn plot, but not always: Christchurch's is $2,925 or actual costs if greater, and Auckland's Waikumete natural burial right is $5,360 before the burial fee. See natural burial.
Help with the cost
- Work and Income Funeral Grant: up to $2,697.43, only if the person who died was your partner, parent or guardian, your child under 18, or a single person over 18 whose funeral you are arranging, and subject to income and asset tests. Prepaid funeral cover can count as an asset and affect eligibility (Work and Income). It is about 19% of the $14,300 average (our sum). See the Funeral Grant guide.
- ACC: up to $8,236.40 if the death was caused by a covered injury (ACC).
- The estate or the bank: the bank can release money from the person's account to pay for the funeral without waiting for probate (Govt.nz).
Ways to keep a burial cost down
Ask for the council's schedule and the funeral director's itemised quote together, because the director passes the council's charge through. Choose a weekday, which avoids the uplifts above. Ask whether a simpler casket suits. None of these is a guarantee of a lower bill, since fees vary by council.
Paying ahead
This section is for planning your own funeral: funeral insurance cannot pay towards a death that has already happened. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs for New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, with acceptance guaranteed and no health questions. For the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident; for any other death it pays nothing and refunds the premiums. The total premiums you pay could exceed the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral: a $5,000 benefit, for example, would fall well short of a $14,300 average. Momentum Life Limited has an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair), affirmed 11 February 2026 (Momentum financial strength). See the funeral insurance hub. The buttons on this page lead to Momentum's online quote.
Adviser's view
A burial usually costs a few thousand dollars more than a cremation, and the council's charges are a large share of that gap. The council part varies far more between towns than any other line, so check your cemetery's own fee schedule before comparing funeral directors, and ask for burial and cremation quotes side by side.
