Water cremation cost in New Zealand: what is known and how to get a price

Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.

We found no published consumer price for water cremation in New Zealand, so we do not print one. The only facility we can source is in Christchurch, which opened in 2025, and the Funeral Directors Association (FDANZ) says it is the first in the country. The checkable figures are for flame cremation, and a funeral director can price the two side by side.

Water cremation, also called aquamation or alkaline hydrolysis, is an alternative to flame cremation. It uses water, gentle heat and natural alkaline compounds instead of fire, and the remains are returned to the family in a form similar to ashes (FDANZ: Burial or cremation). Our companion page on water cremation in New Zealand covers the process, the legal position and where it is available. This page deals only with money: what can be priced, what cannot, and how to get a quote you can rely on.

What can and cannot be priced

Some numbers you may see for water cremation come from machinery sales or from other countries. A machine's purchase price tells you nothing about what a New Zealand family is charged, and an overseas consumer price reflects a different market. The table separates what our sources support from what they do not.

Item What we can say Source
Water cremation, consumer price No price found from a named New Zealand provider None
Where it is offered Christchurch; FDANZ understands Hamilton and Auckland facilities are pending FDANZ 2026 report, pages 28 and 31
Cremation without a service (flame), average $4,700 FDANZ 2026 report, 2025 member survey
Full funeral with cremation, 50 guests, average $11,700 (range $10,000 to $13,900) FDANZ 2026 report
Council cremation fee, indicative range $600 to $1,100 FDANZ, July 2025
Professional services fee, indicative range $3,000 to $6,500 FDANZ, July 2025

The $4,700 and $11,700 averages describe flame cremation as priced by member firms in a stated scenario, so they are a yardstick and not a forecast of what water cremation will cost. FDANZ itself notes that directors are reluctant to quote an "average" (FDANZ: 2026 Industry Trends Report).

What makes up the bill

Whatever the method, a funeral director's invoice has the same two layers: the firm's own professional services fee and the outside costs it pays and passes on. For a water cremation, the outside cost is likely to be the facility's fee in place of a council or crematorium fee. Several things can change the total.

FDANZ's council-cost table shows no council-run cremation service in Christchurch (FDANZ: council burial and cremation costs), and we did not find published fee schedules for the privately run crematoria there. Our Christchurch funeral costs page has more on local fees.

Water or flame: comparing on price

You cannot compare the two on price from published sources, so compare them on an itemised quote. Ask a funeral director to price the same funeral twice, once with each method, and to show the method-specific fee separately. The council cremation fees we have verified give a sense of the flame-cremation side, as at 20 October 2026 and weekday adult resident rates: Auckland $750, Tauranga $777, Wellington (Karori) $885, Nelson $1,120.80 and Dunedin $1,182.20. These are council charges, not totals. See cremation costs for the full picture.

How to get a firm price

  1. Ask your funeral director if they can arrange it. Ask whether the firm already works with the Christchurch facility, and remember the choice of director is yours. See choosing a funeral director and what a funeral director does.
  2. Ask for the quote in writing, itemised, with GST. Ask them to list the facility fee, any transfer, the container, the urn and any documentation or medical fees as separate lines.
  3. Ask what happens if the date changes. If the facility cannot take the person on the planned day, find out whether the quote changes.
  4. Compare with a flame-cremation quote from the same firm. That tells you the real difference for your funeral.
  5. Check any figure quoted online. Ask who the provider is, what year it applies to and what it includes. If no one can say, treat it as unverified.

Who can help pay

Work and Income counts "cremation fees (including water cremation)" as a reasonable expense when it assesses a Funeral Grant, so the method itself does not rule you out (Work and Income: Essential funeral expenses). The maximum grant is $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026, and income and asset tests apply in some cases (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). See our funeral grant guide for the tests. If the death was from a covered injury, ACC may pay up to $8,236.40 towards funeral and memorial costs instead (ACC: Financial support after death).

Burial, flame or water: a cost-only view

Flame cremation Water cremation Burial
Full funeral average, 50 guests (FDANZ) $11,700 No figure found $14,300
Council fee, indicative (FDANZ) $600 to $1,100 No figure found Plot plus interment $1,000 to $8,000
Share of 2025 deaths (FDANZ) 69% cremated Not reported 25% buried

The choice between methods is rarely only about price. Burial or cremation sets out the other considerations, and the funeral costs hub lists what each part of a funeral costs. If you are planning ahead, the funeral insurance hub compares fixed-benefit cover for the costs. Back to the when someone dies hub.

Adviser's view

Water cremation is a real option in Christchurch, but we could not find a consumer price from a named provider, so we print none. The numbers that can be checked are for flame cremation, and the practical route is to ask a funeral director to price both methods on the same itemised basis. Work and Income treats water cremation fees as a reasonable funeral expense, but the Funeral Grant is capped at $2,697.43.
