A $10,000 funeral benefit is a fixed lump sum within Momentum Life's $3,000 to $30,000 range. It sits below FDANZ's 2026 averages for a full funeral, $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial, and above its $4,700 average for an unattended cremation. For the first 24 months only accidental death pays; any other death returns the premiums.
Is $10,000 enough for a funeral in New Zealand?
It depends on the funeral. FDANZ's 2026 industry report prices a set scenario, a funeral home service for 50 attendees with catering, a celebrant, a slideshow, service sheets, a mid-price casket and a weekday transfer. Its averages are $11,700 for cremation (range $10,000 to $13,900) and $14,300 for burial (range $12,800 to $17,000), and $4,700 for an unattended cremation. FDANZ says $10,000 is now "well below" a modest attended funeral (FDANZ, 2026 New Zealand Funeral Industry Trends Report). Against those, $10,000 is $1,700 under the cremation average and $4,300 under the burial average (our arithmetic), and $5,300 over the unattended average.
An itemised look at where $10,000 goes
FDANZ also publishes indicative component ranges, which vary by funeral director (FDANZ: Financial matters). The ranges below are for a cremation, indicative as at July 2025.
| Component | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Professional services fee | $3,000 | $6,500 |
| Cremation fee (council) | $600 | $1,100 |
| Casket | $1,200 | $5,000 |
| Celebrant or clergy | $300 | $900 |
| Chapel hire | $200 | $500 |
| Hearse | $200 | $450 |
| Death certificate | $40 | $40 |
| Doctor's fee (cremations) | $100 | $400 |
| Medical referee (cremations) | $100 | $120 |
| Subtotal (our sum) | $5,740 | $15,010 |
Flowers, catering, notices, service sheets, an urn and a live stream are extra; FDANZ lists flowers at $200 to $500, catering at $15 to $25 a head and an urn at $50 to $500. A $10,000 benefit sits inside the subtotal range, so it may meet a simple arrangement and fall short of a larger one. We do not call it enough or not enough. Some directors publish prices that show the spread: one funeral director's published price list gives a full-service professional fee of $5,955 and a direct cremation professional fee of $3,030, before crematorium and casket costs (Dils Standard Price List, May 2026). For simpler routes see direct cremation costs and the funeral costs hub.
What does Momentum's $10,000 funeral cover actually pay?
Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, is for New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and accepts applicants without health questions (Momentum Life: Funeral Insurance Policy Wording).
| When death happens | Payment on a $10,000 benefit |
|---|---|
| Accident, with death within 90 days of it, at any time | $30,000 (three times the benefit) |
| Any other cause, first 24 months | No benefit; all premiums for that person refunded |
| Any cause, after 24 months | $10,000 |
The benefit is paid to a named person, not to a funeral director or charity. Increasing cover later starts a new 24-month window for the increase. Momentum's maximum across all its funeral policies on one life is $30,000.
How do premiums work on a $10,000 benefit?
Premiums are level each year until the 89th birthday, then stop, and cover continues for life. Momentum publishes no funeral premium and QuoteHub publishes no exact premium for any insurer, so we use another insurer's own published figure as an example of the method. AA Life says its funeral cover starts from $14.28 a week for $10,000, for a 66-year-old female AA Member non-smoker (AA Life: Funeral cover, retrieved 20 October 2026). That is not a Momentum price and applies only to that profile.
Can total premiums exceed the $10,000 benefit?
Yes. Momentum's wording says total premiums could exceed the benefit. Taking AA Life's published $14.28 a week (AA Life: Funeral cover, retrieved 20 October 2026) for that one profile, the yearly total is about $743 (52 weeks), which would reach $10,000 in about 13 and a half years, if the price never changed (our arithmetic). The table shows the same sum at other weekly amounts. The weekly figures are round numbers to show the method, not prices.
| Weekly amount (illustration) | Yearly total | Years until the total paid equals $10,000 |
|---|---|---|
| $5 | $260 | about 38 |
| $10 | $520 | about 19 |
| $15 | $780 | about 13 |
A policy held to the 89th birthday by someone who started at 70 would pay for 19 years. This is why the choice between a policy and putting the money aside yourself is real. See is funeral insurance worth it and funeral insurance cost.
What happens in the first 24 months?
Only accidental death pays. For anything else, the policy pays nothing and returns all premiums. Someone applying because of ill health should read the 24-month rule carefully before paying.
What are the alternatives if $10,000 is not enough?
- A bigger benefit. Momentum's range runs to $30,000; see $20,000 funeral cover.
- Savings or a prepaid plan. If you or a partner may later need rest-home care, Work and Income does not count up to $10,000 each of prepaid funeral expenses held in a recognised funeral plan as an asset (Work and Income: Residential Care Subsidy).
- The Funeral Grant. Up to $2,697.43, tested on assets, and income where the person who died was a partner or child. Prepaid funeral cover can affect it (Work and Income: Funeral Grant).
- A simpler funeral. The cost range above starts well below $10,000.
How do I decide the right amount?
- List what you want: cremation or burial, a service or not, a gathering or not.
- Price it with your local funeral director and council.
- Subtract savings or a prepaid plan.
- Use the funeral cover amount calculator and how much funeral cover do I need.

The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application. Momentum Life Limited's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), in the "Vulnerable" range of Momentum's own table; see its financial strength page. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. Over 75, Momentum does not accept new applicants. Complaints about a Momentum policy go to Momentum first, then to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO). Adviser's view
A $10,000 benefit lands in the middle of the cost range: below FDANZ's 2026 averages for a full cremation or burial funeral, above its average for an unattended cremation. Whether it is enough depends on the funeral you expect, and whether the policy is worth buying depends on how long you pay. At AA Life's published price for a 66-year-old, premiums would pass $10,000 in about 13 and a half years; that is not a Momentum price.
